As mentioned in his own thread Justify has been elected into the US National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Others are: Gun Runner - Horse of the Year and champion older male in 2017. Racing from 2015
through 2018, Gun Runner compiled a record of 12-3-2 from 19 starts and
earnings of US$15,988,500. Joel Rosario - Jockey from the Dominican Republic, has won 3,604 races (through April 20) and ranks No.
4 all-time in North American purse earnings with US$318,313,804 in a
career that began in 2003. The Eclipse Award winner for outstanding
jockey in 2021. Pre-1900 Historic Review Committee Abe Hawkins - jockey, arguably the most celebrated rider in America prior to Isaac Murphy and
the first Black athlete to gain national prominence, Hawkins is
remembered foremost for his victory aboard Lecomte vs. Lexington at the
Metairie Course in New Orleans on April 1, 1854. That day, Hawkins
piloted Lecomte to a record 7:26 for the distance of four miles to hand
Lexington the lone defeat in his Hall of Fame career. Aristides a chestnut colt foaled in 1872, won the inaugural Kentucky Derby in 1875. Trained by Hall of Famer Ansel Williamson, Aristides, a week before the Derby, finished out of the money in the Phoenix Hotel Stakes. He came back in the Derby before a crowd of 10,000 to defeat Volcano by a length, with Ten Broeck fifth. His time of 2:37 3/4 was the fastest ever to that date by a 3-year-old for 1 1/2 miles. Lecomte- Bred in Kentucky by Gen. Thomas Jefferson Wells, Lecomte, a chestnut colt foaled in 1850. As mentioned was famous in the only horse to defeat Lexington. Pillars of the Turf Committee. Harry F. Guggenheim - Owner and Breeder (Cain Hoy Stable) Clement L. Hirsch - co-founder and President of the Oak Tree Racing Association (California). Also owner and breeder. Joe Hirsch - Journalist at The Morning Telegraph. He then transitioned to its companion
publication, Daily Racing Form, where he spent 49 years (1954 through
2003) and became one of racing's most visible and impactful figures.

With regard to Uncle Mo - I'm a bit surprised about his non-impact in OZ. He had anudder G1 dirt winner the past weekend in Adare Manor in G1 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn Park and followed that up with a G3 in Kingsbarns in the Ben Ali Handicap at Keeneland. So dirt is his underlying trait. But he has had a few good turf horse including Golden Pal, Mo Forza, etc I think Grand Mo the First is a huge longshot with a Venezuelan flavor. I incorrectly wrote that he finished 2nd in the Santa Anita Derby. He actually was a well beaten 3rd to Fierceness in the Florida Derby.

Thanks Brudder.
Interesting to see the sire Uncle Mo going very well in the USA. Must be the dirt aspect 'cos the vast majority of his Australian stock couldn't go a yard.

Is getting to the first Classic in the US. We had anudder defection. Deterministic, was pulled by the connections after his poor 7th in the G2 Wood Memorial. This allowed Grand Mo the First, the 2nd place finisher in the G1 Santa Anita Derby to get in the final 20 slots. Favorites Sierra Leone and Fierceness arrived today at Churchill Downs. Some of the others have been doing track work and getting some track familiarization done. Actual draw is done this Saturday with 4 also eligible entries added.

Hades did fail to win. Encino led all the way and out paced The Wine Steward to collect the points. Encino ends up with 40 points and in 21st place and No More Time, qualifies in 20th. No sooner that No More Time qualified, this morning after trialing at Payson Park in Florida he fractured his condylar bone and is out for the year. Encino qualifies!

Group 1s to report. European bred horses continue to ship to the US and pick up nice paydays. At Keeneland, in the G1 Maker's Mark Mile (turf) was won by Godophin's Master of The Seas (Dubawi - Firth of Lorne by Danehill) defeated stablemate Naval Power. The next day in the G1 Jenny Wiley Stakes over 1 1/16 miles (turf), 25/1 French-bred longshot Beaute Cachee (Literato - Sign and Seal by Hurricane Run) ridden of course by Frankie Dettori wins by 1 1/2 lengths. In the G1 Apple Blossom Handicap over 1 1/16 miles (dirt), Bob Baffert shipped Adare Manor (Uncle Mo - Brooklynsway, by Giant Gizmo) and she bolted in by 5 1/2 lengths as the 7/10 odds-on. The US$1 1/4 million stakes offered at Oaklawn Park are just too attractive for Bob and his mates not to scalp. California just doesn't offer that kind of value these days!

Last qualifying race. (20 points for the winner, etc) G3 Lexington Stakes 1 1/16 @ Keeneland The event will have minimum impact to 18 horses from the US that have already qualified. From the field of nine in the event on Hades has a chance to fully qualify, and only if he wins. In early February he was victories in the G3 Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park but his recent 5th in the Florida Derby has put him in this position where he has to win. It will be no easy task as there are several other horse who have qualification points and the best that they can muster is to be come "Also eligible" entries and that is if the win the event. That includes Liberal Arts, Encino and Lucky Jeremy. The dark horse will be The Wine Steward who was quite promising as a 2YO and is only resuming now. A win here for him and The Preakness @ Baltimore would be an interesting proposition. If Hades fails to win then No More Time, the Sam F. Davis Stakes winner at Tampa Bay will be the last qualifier.

Quick summary Completion of the last major qualifiers this weekend G1 Blue Grass Stakes @ Keeneland 1 1/8 miles Sierra Leone was victorious and solidified his position on top of the qualification standings with 155 points and will be the strongest candidate to beat Fierceness who should start the favorite if he starts. 2nd placed Just A Touch also confirmed his place in the field and he could be in the thick of things with another furlong to run! G1 Santa Anita Derby @ Santa Anita 1 1/8 miles Stronghold proved too strong for the Baffert trained Imagination, winning by a neck. He finished 4th in the qualification standings and will be the only Californian entrant in the big event. G2 Wood Memorial @ Aqueduct 1 1/8 miles As I suggested this race would be difficult for the 9/10on favourite Deterministic who struggled and finished 7th. This was not a good sign and connections may just bypass the KDerby on such a performance. The winner Resilience rebounded after his 4th to Sierra Leone in the G2 Risen Star Stakes at the Fair Grounds in February. That event is key as the first five finishers have all qualified for the KDerby. 100/1 longshot Society Man finished second and qualified. New connections bought into him this week to give them a thrill to be at the big dance come the first Saturday in May! It great to have such a dream!!!! |

The last of the major qualifiers this weekend G1 Blue Grass Stakes @ Keeneland 1 1/8 miles Many hope it will be a repeat of the thrilling finish in the G2 Remsen Stakes at Aqueduct in November between Dornoch and Sierra Leone. Both have gone on and won tier II qualifiers but here's a big chance win a GI. Also in it are Just A Touch, Be You and Epic Ride all hoping to spoil the party and get enough to qualify for the big dance. G1 Santa Anita Derby @ Santa Anita 1 1/8 miles Bob Baffert has two in here with Imagination the probable favorite. Stronghold won the Sunland Park Derby last start and will want to pick up more points to lock a place in the KDerby. Other include McVay, Tapalo and Tessuto who also need a good showing to qualify. G2 Wood Memorial @ Aqueduct 1 1/8 miles A full field of 13. Deterministic is the favorite and is already in due to his win in the Gotham Stakes. But this is a race which could spring an upset. |

Quick summary G2 UAE Derby 1900m Undefeated Japanese bred Forever Young continued his winning streak with a comfortable win over 4YO Auto Bahn (ARG). Will the strongest Japanese horse to enter the KDerby ever! G1 Florida Derby 1 1/8 miles Which version of Fierceness will show up for this event? Well it was the champion version winning by 13 1/4 lengths, the longest in race history! Will be the starting favorite come the first Saturday in May if he starts! G1 Arkansas Derby 1 1/8 miles Baffert has brought over Muth from SoCal - and of course there was good reason as he won as the 2nd fav. Muth
will miss the derby unless his owner can get a judge's court order to
dismiss Baffert's suspension at CDowns. Highly unlikely! The Preakness is his next stop in Baltimore! Favorite Timberlake finished 4th and connections withdrew him from the entrants to start in the KDerby.

Coming up G2 UAE Derby 1900m All the rage as undefeated Japanese bred Forever Young winner last start of the Saudi Derby looks to secure a spot in the KDerby. Will have some opposition from Pandagate, Mendelssohn Bay and Navy Seal. G1 Florida Derby 1 1/8 miles Which version of Fierceness will show up for this event? The 2YO champion is the favorite but he will have stiff opposition from Conquest Warrior, Hades and also Frankie's Empire, Le Dom Bro and Grand Mo the First who are looking to get enough points to qualify. G1 Arkansas Derby 1 1/8 miles Baffert has brought over Muth from SoCal for this event (although he will not qualify for the KD Derby) and he is the slight favorite over last start winners Timberlake and Mystic Dan. Others with a chance a needing points to qualify are Liberal Arts, Jsut Steel, Dimantic and Informed Patriot.

This weekend we had two events in the Road the Kentucky Derby qualfication. The G2 Louisiana Derby at the Fair Grounds in New Orleans was won by Catching Freedom who settled last and flew home for a 1 1/4 length victory. Good run, but will it lead a win the KDerby is another ? The G3 Jeff Ruby Steaks on the Tapeta surface was won easily by Endlessly by 4 lengths. Connections are indicating that they might pass the KDerby for the American Turf Stakes on the same day at Churchill Downs. They have a few weeks to think about it. Last years winner of the event, Two Phils ran a super race to finish second, so there are endless possibilities...

Last week the G3 Tampa Bay Derby was held and the winner was Domestic Product, who in his last start was 2nd in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park. He defeated No More Time who previously won the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Both horses padded their qualification point totals and I would say that they will probably have enough to gain a start. This week is a "bye" before we start with some events where 200 points per event is up for grabs next week. The G1 Florida Derby, G1 Arkansas Derby and G2 UAE Derby will be held. |

Sorry I didn't give a preview of the events this past weekend but lets look at the winners.
The winners G2 Fountain of Youth Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Gulfstream Park, Florida Dornoch (KY) dk b/br, 3/c (Good Magic – Puca, by Big Brown) started 1/5on and although he won relatively easily the race was really marred by the fact that a couple of his main challengers scratched either early on or at the barrier. G3 Gotham Stakes over 1 mile @ Aqueduct, NY Deterministic, dk b/br, 3/c (Liam’s Map – Giulio’s Jewel, by Speightstown) resuming after a minor operation should class on a sloppy track and win with something in hand. He's going back to Florida for a bit of sunshine and it will be interesting where Christophe Clemente places him in his last prep before the KDerby. John Battaglia Memorial Stakes 1 1/16 miles @ Turfway Park, KY, All weather track. Encino, dk b/br, 3/c (Nyquist – Glittering Jewel, by Bernardini) beat the race favorite Epic Ride. He'll probably run in the Jeff Ruby Steaks to pick up some more points to be assured of a start in the KDerby. G2 San Felipe Stakes over 1 1/16 miles @ Santa Anita Park, Cal The event was moved to Sunday due to the inclement weather on Saturday. The 3rd (Mc Vay) and 4th (Scatify) placed horses earned points for the KDerby but they like the winner will not be there come the first Saturday in May. |

This week: G2 Rebel Stakes from Oaklawn Park Champagne Stakes winner Timberlake (12th - 13 points) stands above all others as he resumes and will likely start a favorite. Other good competition for him here will come from Just Steel (13th - 12 points) and Northern Flame (42nd - 3 points) who have qualification points. Diamatic is an interesting Asmussen trained horse who comes into this race after easily winning his maiden at Oaklawn after three tries by 3 lengths. |

Last week results: In the Risen Star Stakes the winner was the highly priced Sierra Leone who caught Track Phantom in the slop. Catching Freedom was about 1¼ lengths away in 3rd. Stronghold won the Sunland Park Derby and it will be interesting to see where he goes to keep away from the Baffert horses. Most probably he'll head east where he could qualify for the big race easier. |

This weekend we have two events: On Saturday we have the G2 Risen Star Stakes from the Fair Grounds in New Orleans. This event is the first from the Champion Series which carries 50 qualification points for the winner. Seven entrants in the field of 12 have qualifying points already. So this race will sift the likely hopefuls and put at least the winner into the Kentucky Derby field. The highest point gainer in the field is Track Phantom (30 points, #2) but I think he wont start as the favorite. There are a couple of starters who as 2YOs were very promising and will be highly rated. Second placegetter in the G2 Remsen Stakes, Sierra Leone (5 points, #28) and KJC Stakes winner Honor Marie (10 points, #13) are worth looking at. Other pointgetters in the field are: Tizzy Indy 2 points, #44 Moonlight 7 points, #18 Real Men Violin 5 points, #24 Catching Freedom 10 points, #16 The other event is the G3 Sunland Derby from Sunland Park in New Mexico. The event will be run on Sunday and the point distribution has been lowered to 20 points for the winner. The event has attracted horses from Southern California and local horses that have prepped for the event successfully. The best chances are Stronghold (5 points, #29) and Steve Asmussen's trained Informed Patriot
(6 points, #21). |

Last weekend's winner of the G3 Sam F. Davis Stakes was the Iowa-bred No More Time (Not This Time out of Baroness Juliette, by Speightstown). Started as the 10/3 favorite and ran well to win by 1 1/4 lengths in a time of 1:43.26 for the 1 1/16 miles. No More Time moves into 6th place in the standings.

Lets look at the winners for the 4 events from yesterday - (actual Sunday morning here in OZ) G3 Southwest Stakes 1 1⁄16 miles $800,000 Oaklawn Park The winner Mystic Dan (11/1 - and breeding describe by furious since he has some OZ blood) blew by his rivals after a patient ride by Brian Hernandez Jr to win by 8 lengths on a muddy track. Moves into third place with 21 points. G3 Holy Bull Stakes 1 1⁄16 miles $250,000 Gulfstream Park All eyes were on 1/2on champ Fierceness but he came up very short after being ridden 3 wide all the way. Winner Hades (9/1) led all the way and found plenty in the straight to win by 2 lengths. Hades is in 4th place in the qualification. G3 Withers 1 1⁄8 miles $250,000 Aqueduct Longest event of the day was won by the Pennsylvania-bred Uncle Heavy (9/1) who finished from mid-pack by four lengths in 1:53.79 on a muddy track. Uncle Heavy is in 5th place. G3 Robert B. Lewis 1 mile $150,000 Santa Anita Park The Baffert quinella of Nynos and Wine Me Up was simply too strong for this field but they wont get any qualification points for the derby. Nynos is clearly a horse that Baffert will ship to the East Coast for The Preakness and Belmont Stakes.

Three months to the Kentucky Derby! Four qualifying events this Saturday! G3 Southwest Stakes 1 1⁄16 miles $800,000 Oaklawn Park G3 Holy Bull Stakes 1 1⁄16 miles $250,000 Gulfstream Park G3 Robert B. Lewis 1 mile $150,000 Santa Anita Park G3 Withers 1 1⁄8 miles $250,000 Aqueduct Champion 2YO Fierceness resumes in the Holy Bull. He has been the overwhelming favorite in the early books. Bob Baffert is still banned from entering his trained horses so they will not earn any qualification points and his owners have not moved their horses from him so basically they have indicated that their horses will not be pointed to the Kentucky Derby. |
