Pig and poke inquiry for Stanaway

Andrew Eddy@fastisheddy

10:23am

There was 'sandwich-gate', where Bryce Stanaway almost threw away his trainer's licence when he was fined $2000 after an argument began about a lack of sandwiches for owners and trainers.

Now a 'pig and a poke' scandal threatens to hasten the end of the training career of the enigmatic New Zealander.

Stanaway is currently involved in a stewards' inquiry emanating from the Werribee meeting on April 8, where he agreed he called steward Chris Agnew 'a pig' but denies he gave him 'a poke'.

"I didn't poke him," Stanaway told stewards on Thursday. "I would have knocked his bloody head off."

Before a three-member stewards' panel chaired by Corie Waller, Stanaway claimed Agnew rushed towards him on his arrival at the course that day and demanded Stanaway reveal what he had in a bag.

"I was treated like a criminal, like I had something in my bag I shouldn't have," Stanaway said.

Those events then rolled into a heated clash between the pair before the opening race in the scales area, where the alleged poke occurred. Stanaway denied poking Agnew, explaining it was more of a point, but he agreed that he called the steward 'a pig'.

"He is a pig for the way he treated me," he told the panel.

Barry Hassett was on the horse gate that day and he confirmed that Agnew had been looking for Stanaway before the opening race. Hassett said that while he was certain about the intent of the words used by Agnew about Stanaway, he wasn't certain of the content.

He was unsure whether he heard Agnew ask 'Is that stupid Stanaway here yet'? or 'Is that silly Stanaway here yet'? or indeed 'Is that bloody idiot Stanaway here yet'?

Ross Brown was on another gate that day and he said he heard Agnew ask 'Is that stupid Stanaway here yet'?

Brown told the inquiry via phone that he thought at the time 'it sounds like he's got it in for Stanaway' and that his 'attitude towards Stanaway left a lot to be desired'.

Stanaway said he was told by one of his owners what Agnew had said about him before the confrontation in the scales area.

Agnew claimed the clash happened after he was directed by acting chief steward Waller to ask Stanaway if he was going to add any gear - in the form of a packing to go under the saddle - to any of his three runners in the second race of the day, the 2630-metre 0-58 Highweight.

Waller wanted the information of any extra weight being carried as stewards intended on relaying the information to the public.

Agnew claimed Stanaway did not immediately respond to his question about the packing but a few seconds later the trainer came up to him and then spurted out 'and showered me with saliva'.

"He flew off his lever and threatened me personally," the steward said before claiming he had never felt so harassed in his 37 years in the job.

Stanaway told the stewards' panel that his team at Torquay was down to about 12 horses and that he intended on 'throwing in' his trainer's licence once the winter campaign of his best stayer, the veteran Crafty Cruiser, is finished. He said he intends on returning to New Zealand following recent events.

In 2015, Stanaway was fined $2000 for scratching three horses from a Racing.com Park meeting following an argument earlier in the day over a shortage of sandwiches for trainers and owners.

Stewards have adjourned the current inquiry.

If the stewards cannot show participants any respect, why do they think they deserve it themselves? They need to stop thinking they're in the CIA and quit the bullying.

" How much packing he is going to use under the saddle so they can relay overweight to punters", never heard soo much crap in my life, you may as well say to a jock behind the
the barriers " now your only allowed to drink 10 mill. of that water in case your over" ,
their appears a vendetta for whatever reason, not a good look imo.

Inever quite understood why so many stewards think they are above reproach .  It must be a carry down from the days of Ye Olde England, when all the racing hierarchy were the Duke Of some obscure castle, or  Lord Muckety of Muck.  Even now if one puts a toe out of line one must face the music in the Jockey Club Rooms,, read that as the "Hallowed Halls Of Silvertails " where one must touch their forelock before speaking.
One can only hope as a few more young ones come thru the ranks here ,  and the old Untouchables die out things might change a bit.  But then, we all know its taking longer than expected to move racing out of the dark ages. Cry

He isn't afraid to speak is mind and tells it like it is. The boys club obviously doesn't appreciate that.

No doubt but there's a right way and a wrong way to handle the situation.  Getting in somebody's face and calling them a pig is not the former.

In this case it's apparent that Stanaway was provoked so if you want to wave your finger at anyone it should be the provocateur.

Agree but its like an ordinary person dealing with a cop who's over stepping the mark.  Nothing good comes from an aggressive response.

Sure, Bryce overstepped the mark and has a history - (might need to have some anger management)

But, if what the stewards is alleged to have said proven to be true then surely he is out of a job?

Yes but its not very professional of a steward ,  paid to uphold the integrity of racing, going around asking gate men if the idiot Stanaway had showed up, is it ?

Trainer Bryce Stanaway had a misconduct charge proven but received no penalty from the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board, which earlier queried whether the charge had 'sufficient gravity' to be heard.

Just minutes into Tuesday morning's hearing into an altercation between Stanaway and Racing Victoria steward Chris Agnew in April, RAD Board chairman Judge John Bowman invited stewards to bring an early end to the proceedings by giving them 'a chance to consider whether it is a matter that should consume the tribunal's time'.

After a short adjournment, steward Corie Waller confirmed stewards wanted to pursue the misconduct charge, under Australian racing rule 175 (q), but would not seek a penalty for Stanaway after the trainer admitted he called steward Agnew 'a pig of a man' during the Werribee meeting on April 8.

Waller apologised to the board that the 'low-level' matter was to proceed and said it was possible that stewards could have been 'blinkered by the rule' but said that 'for a licensee to insult an official in a loud and abrasive tone in the middle of a busy scales area is conduct that cannot be completely accepted'.

Judge Bowman again queried whether the matter had 'sufficient gravity' for the board to become involved. He said that one man calling another 'stupid' and then one man calling the other 'a pig' amounted to '15-all'.

The board was told that earlier, Agnew had been heard by two gateman on that day to ask where 'stupid Bryce Stanaway was' and the trainer said he felt insulted when informed later by one of his owners, so retaliated with the words that Agnew was 'a pig of a man'.

It was confirmed by Waller that Agnew had breached the code of conduct for Racing Victoria officials and an undisclosed action had been taken against him. Waller also said it was Agnew's intention to apologise to Stanaway in writing for the comment he made.

Stanaway conceded he breached AR 175 through his comments to Agnew and lamented that the issue could not have been dealt with in a different manner.

He said the matter would have been resolved quickly if he and Agnew had adopted the ways of the 'shearing gangs in New Zealand' where the pair would have been thrown into the swabbing box to settle their differences.

"I know who would have won too," Stanaway observed.

Judge Bowman said that Stanaway's comment about Agnew constituted a technical breach of the rule and so the charge would be upheld, but that the board would not issue a penalty.

Stanaway had earlier threatened to take the matter to the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal but after the Tuesday hearing, said he would not pursue the matter further.

More pathetic, vindictive and puerile rubbish from this mob. Just shows you how bad the RV Integrity department really is. Even when invited by RADB to withdraw and stop wasting people's valuable time on petty nonsense - initiated as it was by a racing official - they insist on proceeding.

It appears that no-one in that part of RV has the maturity, leadership or common sense to deal with minor incidents let alone follow their own rules.

A horse carrying that weight in any grade is not the domain of an inexperienced jockey.

I should point out I did not see or hear the race but have seen the result.
