He was never going to win today. He's raced in just about everything in the last 2 years and seriously whoever mapped out his programs needs to be sacked (if he hasn't already).

I'd hoped he would recover from his last run but not to be.
But, the replay will show he gets a nice shunt from Homesman before being squeezed between Homesman and Lord Fandango.
Sure to be included in the stewards report.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left

I agree about his programming. Gives everything first up, and then looks flat. The St George was surely a pointer. Fresh over 1400-1600 he’s as good as just about anything. Probably too late now.

Clearly Hartnel is not the same horse he was 2 years ago otherwise he would have easily won the Australain yesterday.

I reckon he loomed up but just wouldn't let down fully and feels like he wants longer.
Flem is so compacted since the rebuild its an appalling surface.

Stewards: Hartnell (GB) - steadied when crowded for room near the 300m between Lord Fandango (GER), which had been taken out by Ventura Storm (IRE), and Homesman (USA) which had also shifted in slightly. A post race veterinary examination failed to reveal any abnormalities.

You don't understand track and soil surfaces then
Some good 3 tracks have some give , some are compacted and firmer feeling.
You can do any penno test you like and they come up the same reading.
Its all about soil texture and compaction.
And the people who think water, water water don't understand the compaction issue either.

Horse was plain last start at Caulfield. His career best was on a good 3 at Flemington. His best is very good but he can't sustain it through the traditional Aussie prep. We've seen it since he's been here and it's getting more obvious as he gets older. They need to space his runs.

Hayes figured out Redkirk Warrior very quickly. Shame they don't seem to have figured this bloke out yet.

I don't disagree at all.
He seems best early in prep nowadays , but that is in part due to the cumulative effects of firm tracks through a prep.
I have mates in the set up and they feel he doesn't like the firm going.

Not beaten fad yesterday but still on the disappointing side.

The Hartnell of old would have torched that field.

His first up 2nd in the JJ Liston 1400m showed at least he’s not cooked yet.   But his form in his last few preps has seemed to taper off pretty quickly.

Not sure where do they go with him next?

Echo that sentiment Shawy. He’s a proper racehorse.

Competitive at Autumn & Spring carnivals 4 consecutive years from 2015 to 2018 and over a wide range of distances from 1400m to 3200m.

Well done Hartnell

Onya Hartnell. Can tick off 'win a major G1 hcp with top weight' off the bucket list. Top effort from the ageing galloper against some very talented stars on the rise.

I find it interesting that James is kicking off his campaign in the Expressway Stks over 1200m today.

1st up over 1400m WFA at Caulfield has been the successful formula for him the last 3 campaigns, so I wonder what the thinking is here.

Not sure what the target races are this autumn but the CF Orr Stks is only next weekend.

Hartnell Needs All Star Mile Votes
Godolphin trainer James Cummings expects evergreen veteran Hartnell to be an All Star Mile vote catcher when he goes for an unlikely first-up win in the Expressway Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Incredibly it will be the first time in Hartnell’s career of 46 starts that the four-time Group One winner has raced over 1200 metres.

However Cummings has warned that the 8YO should not under-estimated even though his stablemate Alizee heads the betting market as an odds on favourite.

“Sure he resumes at an unlikely distance for him but he’s going like a horse who can run a cheeky race,” Cummings said.

“I was delighted with his barrier trial last week. He looks to have returned well and they won’t want to be laying down with him chasing them home.

“Look for him to be running on very strongly at the finish.”

Certainly the weight-for-age conditions of the Expressway Stakes are favourable for Hartnell Horseform, who has rarely failed to perform close to his best when resuming under the set weight scale.

In 10 previous first-up starts he has won twice and filled four minor placings but more relevant are his performances in his last five first-up starts, all over 1400 metres.

He has finished first or second in those five races, winning the 2017 PB Lawrence Stakes and 2018 CF Orr Stakes and finishing runner-up in the 2016 Warwick Stakes, 2017 Apollo Stakes and 2018 PB Lawrence Stakes.

Another bold fresh run from Hartnell on Saturday should certainly stir the attention of the public yet to vote for an entry in the inaugural $5 million All Star Mile at Flemington next month.

Despite his popular win under the topweight in the G1 Epsom Handicap at Randwick last spring Hartnell has to date attracted only 713 votes for the All Star Mile, the first race in Australia where the majority of the field will be determined by the votes of fans.

Voters will select 10 of the 14 horses in the final field and currently Hartnell needs a surge of support as he 24th on the voting order with 713 votes. He is more than 1100 votes outside the top 10 with three weeks to the voting deadline on February 21.

Cummings is not perturbed at this stage but will be disappointed if his stable favourite does not get the chance to contest the All Star Mile.

“It’s the ideal race for him,” Cummings said.

Alizee is also entered for the All Star Mile. The dual G1 winner is currently 14th on the voting order with 1147 votes and will probably shoot into the top 10 if she wins the Expressway Stakes.

Alizee Horseform, after missing the spring due to a bleeding attack in August, made her 4YO debut with a hollow win the Christmas Classic (1200m) at Randwick five weeks ago and followed up with an effortless third in a strong 900m trial at Rosehill on January 15.

“She’s done brilliantly between runs. She looked wonderful in her action in the trial,” Cummings said.

“The Expressway is a competitive race but the small field will help her on her way before she steps up in distance.”

He's a very good miler as is his stablemate Alizee.
Both would be more than competitive in the All Star Mile.

I think he’s an ideal all-star candidate but the last couple of years shows he’s best first up or with his runs spaced a bit. Don’t think he appreciates thefortnighly campaign. If they feel they have to run him in unsuitable races to attract votes then that’s a pretty sad indictment on the event.

Thanks guys. Yes he does seem to appreciate a break between runs these days.

Assume that after today he’d head to Melb for the Futurity 1400m in 3 weeks time on 23rd Feb, then there’s another 3 weeks to the All Star Mile on 16th March....assuming he actually makes the field!!

If he doesn’t get enough votes, I would suspect he would get a wildcard.
Perfect candidate IMO
