I don't think he should be running in the Melbourne Cup.
Should be going to the 2000m race

Never say never but I'm pretty sure the stable said after last year's running he wouldn't be contesting the MC again

Maybe something to do with minimum top weights??

Carpenter said Hartnell given a slight discount in MC weights to reflect his 3200m record.

That's a ridiculous reasoning from Carpenter, it just ran 3rd in a Melb Cup!

3rd beaten 4 and half lengths. It is a perfectly valid reasoning.

Hartnell 58 kgs in the Caulfield Cup.
Stablemate Francis Of Assissi 54 kgs.

I doubt Hartnell will run.

He missed his chance last year when they took him out because of Scottish and I think he would have won. Well, my punting account hoped he would. Embarrassed
I started with nothing and still have most of it left

He also mentioned his 0/3 record in Australia over 3200 (4th btn 7 lengths in Sydney Cup 2015 with 52kg, 15th in Melb Cup in 2015 with 55.5kg, 3rd last year with 56kg beaten 4.5) plus the fact the horse he beat narrowly in the UK over 2 miles as a 3 yr old has only been allotted 50kgs in this years Cup.

When you consider the above, its a fair argument he makes.

Thought he was good today...but that's Hartnell. Hey Doc probably stitched him up, but that was a tough run he had, and he's not getting any younger. Can't see him giving weight to Humidor, Almandin and Bonneval and beating them in the CC now. Give him some time to get over that and set him for the McKinnon imho.

Hope he wins the CC...and keeps Bonneval at decent odds for the MC.
2400 looks his go.

Announced last week he'd be ridden back.

Surely a $11 chance in the Cox should he head that way.

Felt the firm track a bit.
A lot of riders reported the same all day.

He's run the fastest 1400-1200-1000-800-400... Bonneval fastest 200.

Bowman had to use the stick before the turn on the winner... If KMac gets on the back of Bart, does that change the outcome?

Not sure I'd be jumping off him in the CC. There's enough rain around in the next couple of weeks to soften Caulfield up to a 4-5.

I reckon they got their tactics back to front, preferably you give the horse some cover around Flemington at the risk of going back, around Caulfield I'd risk racing without cover to have the horse on the speed

Paid up this week for the Cox Plate and both Cups.

Has James said anything in the press about where HARTNELL is likely to head after the Caulfield Stakes?

Plenty of paths for him to take the rest of the spring, including the Mackinnon Stks and Sandown Classic too.

Will be fascinating to see where they head with him.

He said there looks to be many nice options for him but they won't commit to anything before Saturday is done.

Rumour has it he will go for 2nd place in the Cox Plate.

They were quite similar runs and sectionals were quite similar until the last 200m where Bonneval was 12.59 vs Hartnell 12.73. She was noticeably stronger in the last furlong and neither horse was throttled down. I think she benefits third up more than Hartnell does fourth up, while both benefit up to 2000m.

I'm very warm on Bonneval. Could be unbeaten this prep by the time it ends and that will be something special.
