Hoping Hartnell wins
Australian racing is only good up to 1400m in terms of world standards when it comes to depth/quality in numbers

Hartnell is one of my all time favourites. You have to admire the real truest and he is definitely one of those. Imagine his record if Winx didnā€™t exist! His 2016-17 season results would have had him up with the greats. Hope he enjoys the retirement he deserves.

Hartnell, one of Godolphin's most popular gallopers throughout the world, will retire after he races in Saturday's $2 million Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes.

"He will retire as one of the most superior weight-for-age horses to ever race for Godolphin anywhere in the world," said Vin Cox, Godolphin's managing director in Australia.

Cox said in a note sent this week to every member of his Godolphin team: "Win or lose, this champion has given us all so much. He has nothing to prove on Saturday, but we all know he will give his all.

"We are all so lucky to have had an association with this great horse and he is a true inspiration to everyone at Godolphin."

Cox also announced that Hartnell will be cared for by Godolphin for the rest of his days.

"It has been decided that Hartnell will be the flag bearer for the Godolphin Lifetime Care program and remain in Godolphin's ownership," Cox said.

And the best of the very good care he receives will come from Reg Fleming, who for so long was Bart Cummings' number one man in Melbourne but is now Godolphin's senior foreman at Carbine Lodge - and Hartnell's most devoted fan.

Hartnell will join the former Cummings-trained performers Precedence and Sirmione, and the Godolphin runner Moher under Fleming's care.

For the record, the Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes will be the 34th time the horse has contested a G1. He is searching for a 14th win on Saturday that would be his fifth at the top level and he'll undoubtedly add to more than $7 million in racetrack earnings.

Indeed, if Hartnell can win the Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes, he will finish his career as the ninth-highest prizemoney earner in Australian racing history.

Cox pointed out that the Maktoum family has raced more than 5200 individual horses since 1992 and none of them has won more Stakes races than Hartnell.

Hartnell was foaled on April 19, 2011 at Rutland Stud near Newmarket and went into training with Mark Johnston, racing initially in the colours of Sheikh Mohammed's son, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum.

Johnston had also trained Hartnell's dam, Debonnaire, who along with his sire Authorized, not only supplied a fine set of genes but the inspiration for his name, which is attributed to fashion designer Norman Hartnell, the authorised dressmaker to the Queen.

James Cummings sends Hartnell out for his final race on Saturday with a mixture of hope, confidence and admiration.

"He's come up every prep for us, he's been an absolutely amazing horse," he said.

"He's perhaps the most accomplished weight-for-age horse Godolphin has ever raced in Australia and he's an absolute credit to himself."

The old boy will be retiring on Saturday at Flemington.
He is heading for a career in show jumping.

Hereā€™s hoping he goes out a winner!

I, for one, applaud their decision. He retires safe and sound, ready for a less strenuous life elsewhere. I wonder where he will go? Much loved by the stable, no doubt someone has had their eye on him for awhile. Above average in looks, and personality too by what has been written.

Veteran galloper Hartnell will step out for what is likely to be his final start at Flemington in next monthā€™s Group 1 Seppelt Mackinnon Stakes over 2000 metres.

The son of Authorized came to Australia a dual Stakes winner having claimed the Listed Queenā€™s Vase at the 2014 Royal Ascot meeting as well as the Group 3 Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket under trainer Mark Johnston.

Since arriving in Australia, the Godolphin-owned gelding has become a crowd favourite, claiming Group 1 wins in The BMW (2015), Turnbull Stakes (2016), C F Orr Stakes (2018) and a track record win over the Randwick mile in the 2018 Epsom Handicap.

Speaking on After The Last on Monday night, trainer James Cummings lamented 'what might have been' for Hartnell after the gelding's luckless seventh behind Mer De Glace in Saturday's Caulfield Cup.

ā€œReg (Fleming) and Andy Makiv both thought we shouldā€™ve been leaving Caulfield racecourse on Saturday with the Caulfield Cup,ā€ said Cummings.

ā€œHe lost all his momentum, it was hard to watch. Brad (Rawiller) thought he was travelling beautifully for him.ā€

Asked where his next start would be Cummings said, ā€œitā€™s getting towards the end for Hartnell and it has been discussed that his next start would probably be his last.

ā€œWeā€™re going to take him to the Mackinnon, back to Flemington, 2000m at WFA.

ā€œHe will be dropping back in distance and he will enjoy his preferred gap of three weeks.

ā€œIt would be a wonderful send off if he could hit the front and the crowd roared for him like they did in the Turnbull.

ā€œHartnell has done a wonderful job for the stable and he has been one Godolpinā€™s most superior WFA horses to ever race in Australia ā€“ if not the most superior.ā€

I thought he did a tendon a while back, but happy to be wrong. Agree that he is well loved and managed, really nice style of horse. Just hope they call it quits before he goes amiss, they donā€™t hold up forever.

Wont win another race imo (at least at G1 level)

Been a fine horse however and he's still well and truly paying his way so he should go on

Wrong thread, Sister?
Hartnell has never broken down or even had a major injury.
I totally agree with you about retiring horses with issues but in this case I do have faith that James Cummings does the best thing by the horse. (Imagine the backlash if he didn't; likewise Waller and KWD, Smith and BHB etc.)

Point is, these old geldings have given their all, suffered breakdowns, miraculously comeback and put their hooves back on the till.
šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ‘šŸ¤®šŸ¤®šŸ¤®
So give a bit back, let them retire and enjoy a big grassy paddock with a few mates in their retirement, or a new, less hi impact career
Donā€™t race them u til they break down again? They donā€™t deserve that....

Heā€™s a racehorse and the only reason he was bred was to race. The argument against him racing on lacks any logical sense at all.

Just to clarify, he was foaled in Great Britain on 19 April 2011 meaning he's an 8yo, not 9.

Geez he just ran 3rd in a Grp 1 at 9 which is better than 99.99999% of horses racing. The critics on this forum are amazing knockers.

Exactly right SD.

Godolphin have lots of horses that are worth more in dollar terms to the organisation, but Iā€™ll bet that Hartnell is the most beloved horse in the stable & the staff would be very proud to be turning him out so competitively season after season. When Iā€™ve heard James Cummings talk about him in interviews, you can hear the reverence that has for the horse and his achievements.

Theyā€™ve certainly looked after him the last few preps with limited 4 or 5 start campaigns.

Yesterday was his 5th start this spring, so not sure whatā€™s next for him or if heā€™s off to the paddock? Maybe a MV Crystal Mile G2 WFA over 1600m could see him finish the spring with a win.

Hartnell has chased Winx all his career.

He has won multiple group 1's, he is a genuine group 1 winner.

He is being beaten by horses who in the past he would have beaten.

He has been a warrior for the stable, and if money is the reason this stable keeps a nine year old racing, then I must be missing something.

Yes, he is being competitive, but the reminds me of the old boxer who has one too many bouts.

Any of the ratings guys out there, can you tell us whether the ratings show, he is racing anywhere near his previous best.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise
