i am surprised pt.

what have you learned?

It is a series based on the true story of the Russians Illegals spy program broken up in 2010.

Many events in the current political environment in America resonate through it.

The Hangover on Ch 9, hilarious!

Am watching part 3 again, pretty good.

Pacino was nominated for a supporting actor Oscar for part 1, did not turn up in protest as he believed ,correctly IMO that he had a bigger part than Brando and deserved to be nominated for the main award.
Should have won it too, I thought Brando's performance was woeful.

I love De Niro but I also thought his Oscar for part 2 was not deserved, just an ordinary effort, Pacino again was much better in that film.

Anyway it is all politics and voting blocks, fairly meaningless

The Indian Pacific: The Full Journey

7:30PM - 10:40PM

Crossing Australia from Perth to Sydney, the pivotal part played by the transcontinental railway line in linking the far-flung west coast with the eastern states is explored, including how the rail impacted Indigenous Australians on the Nullabor Plain, the new colony of South Australia, and the Indigenous trade route of the Blue Mountains.

3 hours of a train crossing Australia on the ''slow tv'' format. No dialogue, jus a train and a heap of desert. Strangely fascinating. SBS has 3 of these docos I think.

Also streamed live online.

I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I got my first taste of slow TV with the Sleigh Ride across the top of Finland on SBS on Christmas eve but I must admit snow is boring.

But trains ?  Woooo Hoooo.   I watched the whole 190 minutes.  I found it really relaxing.

Looking forward to doing the Kimberley next week.

I didn't believe you.  I had to look it up.

It doesn't pan out for me though.  The interesting bits will be in the wee small hours of the morning, then I am busy in the morning and while the trip through the Blue Mountains was good everything afterwards is just Sydney.

I got the same feeling watching the last act tonight as I get driving back to Melbourne from the farm.  Cities are depressing.

But what about the endless wheels clicking along on the tracks and the vast red dust country , and spinafex for hours ???
Best trip I ever did in 10 years.  We/the train broke down way out in the middle of the desert.  As the sun rose this bloke got down off the train, set up his stand to hold his music, and hauled out his violin and played, and played.  No idea what the music was but he was good and it was awesome seeing the sun rise over the desert while this music echoed out.
I always liked onto the way into Broken Hill and seeing the camp set up by the old Afghan with his camels .

Sunday Night had a bit on Jonestown, and Jim Jones tonight.

Was better that watching the Socceroos insipid display against Jordan in the Asia Cup.

I usually steer clear of Sunday Night and 60 Minutes but the Jonestown story was very good, They just stuck to a narration of what the facts(as known) were with lots of fantastic vision and audio, and interviews with a couple of people who survived it to support it.

It is truly frightening how people can be manipulated into doing such horrific things, things like that survivor Thom who was a small boy and he and his friend tried to escape but were captured and ''tried'' for it with his own mother screaming out for him to be executed to the mass murder/suicide over 900 people a third of them children.

I had tonight marked for a cruise from Broome to Darwin on SBS but the local community station Channel 31 has thrown a spanner in the works.

If there is one thing I like almost as much as great cinema it is really awful cinema and C31 gives us both ends of the spectrum tonight with the 1925 Russian classic Battleship Potemkin

and the 1950 Hollywood lemon Rocketship X-M

It's popcorn time.

Watching Paul Kelly @ the Opera House. It's funny looking at the middle aged Groovers in the audience.Do you know Kelly is a bit of a ladies man, if you get my drift. The power of music, huh.

I'm imagining Alan Jones across the Quay getting down to this with his man servant.

That was great but I have seen it before.

I honestly believe Kelly is right up there with AB Patterson.   People's poet, Australian bard.

They aren't much alike but Kelly's head will end up on a bank note.  I am sure of it.

The New Zealand slow TV was the best yet IMO.   Spectacular country and all those bridges, viaducts and spirals were pure engineering porn.

I made a point of cooking a lamb roast in the kettle BBQ and picking it over with a bottle of Shiraz while I watched the Auckland to Milford Sound journey.  I have to admit I was nodding off in the latter stages but there is nothing wrong with that.  Thoroughly enjoyable.

It's one of the same series AA:

North to South

Sunday 27 January, 2019, 7.30pm, SBS (3 hours)
Saturday 2 February, all day, SBS VICELAND

A spectacular overland route from Auckland on New Zealand’s north island, down to the south by way of multiple forms of transport including railways, sailing and driving. The city gives way to rolling pastures, volcanic extremes, tranquil waterways, the rough Otago high country and grandeur of the Southern Alps and Milford Sound.
