Thoroughbred Village is back up now. Apologies for being offline for much of the afternoon. The entire hosting company was kaput.. sadly.

Forum out for about an hour around 1am to 2am, not a great sign for Melbourne Cup day.

It was out around 2am when I was trying to post my tips. Didn't matter, they were no good.

I'll investigate why they are having issues... it's them not us.

FYI, some useful explanation from our hosting company.. (paraphrased)

Mayor

In your forum you have the WYSIWYG editor enabled allowing the posting of HTML content.

The problem with posting HTML content is that if someone copies and pastes from a different source then the encoding is also copied and pasted as well.

This means that if you copy and paste a non ASCII characters like a formatted quotation mark then the encoding of the original page is also pasted.

As there are 100's of different encodings it would be almost impossible to detect the formatted quotation mark and convert it to the encoding used by the forum.

The only way around this would be to disable the WYSIWYG editor, but then you would also not be able to copy and paste HTML in to the forum.

The WYSIWYG editor is intended to allow forum users to format their posts, but the formatting available is very basic to prevent the forum being hijacked by malicious code such as malware.

The forum is designed for basic formatting as this is all that is needed within the majority of forums. The forum has not been designed for the copy and pasting of HTML from other web pages as this is not usually permitted in most forums as the copy and pasting of other web pages often breaches copyright.

Most forums will not allow copy and pasting from other websites as Google will rank you lower for duplicate content and if they have DMCA report against copied material on another websites will remove that websites from their listings.

Many websites will intentionally obsticate content on their websites to intentionally cause issues when copy and pasting to other websites. This is done to cause both formatting errors like what you are getting and also so they can use bots to find and locate websites using their content in order to take legal action against those websites.

One prime example of this in the topic you list to is one of your members copy and pasting from the Daily Telegraph and the formatting of the copy and pasted text not being correctly formatted. This is because the Daily Telegraph will obsticate their content to prevent such copy and pasting of their copyrighted content.

I would advise being watchful of what you allow copy and pasted on your forum as we have been served take down notices by solicitors/lawyer firms a number of times in relation to content that has been copied from other sources.

Thanks Mayor, see, persistence pays.........a detailed reply Clap

Now, in our Profile we have 'Forum Preferences' & in there is

Enable the WYSIWYG post editor
Only browsers that are detected as being Rich Text Enabled will have this feature available when posting. Yes< name="ieEditor" id="ieEditor" value="True" ="" ="40" ="">  No< name="ieEditor" id="ieEditor" value="False" ="41" ="">

Tech savvy guys? Should turning this to No alleviate the problem?

I'd probably prefer to have a forum-wide change, not just individual choice. I need to know what impact it would have on user experience if we remove HTML posting... perhaps we might need to trial it for a day to see.

Test:

The Ciaron Maher-trained mare skipped the entire spring carnival after Racing Victoria refused to accept any nominations for the horse as it investigated the bona fides of her ownership.

"Given the timeframe we allowed the [Perth] nomination to go through if the ownership of the horse is settled in the meantime," Bailey said. "If it's not settled in the meantime it won't be running. If in the event the ownership is resolved in the meantime they might well be right to run."

Seems to be running fast here now. However maybe the hosting company has been doing something as the two sites were down for a period of time yesterday morning.
