Are tight difficult turns 'unfair' in the tour de France? Is a bad bounce 'unfair' in the US Masters? I could go on. These are environmental factors known to competitors and spectators before the commencement of the event. They assess a range of skills more broadly than the over-simplified 'who is the best'. Horses for courses, as they say. Many animals are suited by the tight Moonee Valley circuit, having this skill - and it definetly is a skill - should be viewed as a valid attribute in racing. |

No they shouldn't.
Every player in the Masters tees off from the same spot. I would love to see the team riding from the tour introduced into Australian horse racing. Love it. Great idea.

How does that make the best horse win? It makes the trainer who has the most horses to waste win :S, bizarre logic.

Joao Moreira booked for Heartbreak City in the Melbourne CupOct 11, 2016 Widely acclaimed to be the world's best jockey, Hong Kong based Joao Moreira has been booked to ride the Heartbreak City in this year's Melbourne Cup. Darren Dance's Australian Thoroughbred Bloodstock just recently secured a major share in the Tony Martin trained import and the news of Moreira's booking adds further excitement to the prospect of having a Cup runner. Moreira who has destroyed riding records over the past 24 months, rode the Darren Weir trained Signoff when winning the Lexus on Derby Day in 2014. More on this breaking news as it unfolds.................... Peter Morganti |

Just a huge thrill to see him out here again, and expecting him to do something this week.
After missing the ride on in the Cox Plate, no doubt he will be out to prove something.
I'm on him in the Wakeful e/w ... Waterloo Sunset looks a consistent type, drawn well, just needs some magic applied. Also think he can be the X Factor in the widest race of the carnival, The Cantala Stakes on Mackintosh, who is honest and in form. Don't think they can win, but the $7.50 a place for Derryn and $9 for Wine Bush both look tempting. I'm against his other rides, but will be saving with him in every exotic! |

In reference to every post in the Trump thread ... "There may have been a tiny bit of license taken there" ... Ok, Thanks for the "heads up" PT!

That was as classy as it gets today. How he positioned HC so beautifully from barrier 23 then worked into it and pushed through, then getting every ounce out of the horse, and then that spontaneous gesture at the end. He deserved to win it... dammit.

Brilliant ride on Heartbreak City, just couldn't get there. In fairness didn't think Frankie did much wrong from the outside gate either, pace was just too quick for those near the speed.

You ever heard of a jockey telling a trainer when to run his horse because that's the only time when he can ride it? Daily lunch's with owners, trainers trying to get rides. The networking thay have to do is unbelievable. Douglas Whyte, 13 time Champion, has a rough patch and all of a sudden he's getting about half the rides he once was and people are booing him in the mounting yard. I'd say that's rather competitive. It's not all about wins and losses. |

"Former retained Godolphin rider Mickael Barzalona managed just one win from 42 rides, Englishman Tom Queally – rider of unbeaten champion Frankel – went three from 78, Qatar Racing’s former No. 1 Andrea Atzeni was three from 79, one-time Coolmore top jockey Colm O’Donoghue had 75 rides for a single win, while Australian Christian Reith went back to Sydney early after landing just two winners from 111 rides in the 2014/15 season.
It’s a pressure-cooker environment and it’s brutal. Reputations count for very little. Jockeys have to prove themselves all over again." Taken from an article on HK racing |

He's riding at Flemington on Saturday and his horses have all been kept MUCH shorter in the market than they would have been with any other jockey. Which raises the question:- How many lengths is he worth? Is his skill even worth anything considering he's racing away from home. Surely the local jockeys have some advantage being very familiar with the way races are run in Australia.
I would hazard a guess in that his horses are so much shorter that they would have to run at least a length better with him on board to justify their price.

Brazen Beau rated 1-2 lengths better when Joao was on board. Anyone think of other horses he 'improved'?

I'd like to see a few more examples, but I'm starting to think he just may be worth a length or so.
