So I'm thinking I might try my luck on Hong Kong races. Now I know the HKJC website is pretty comprehensive, but are there any other websites/form guides/data providers/forums/press etc worth having a look at? Any tips for a novice HK punter? thanks! Edited by Gay3 - 21 Feb 2022 at 3:21pm |

Photo special: now this is how to engage with the racing publicA
long line of excited fans waits. Some clutch pens and paper for
autographs, but most have their phones ready for a selfie with their
idol. As they get closer to the front of the line, they smile and giggle, they can’t believe they are this close to a superstar. When they meet him, they expect to be overawed, but such is his friendly demeanour that they relax in his presence. This star is no prima donna. He realises the importance of his fans and appreciates them. He does not take himself too seriously, posing for photos with a clown then pinching his hat and playing up to the crowd. George Clooney? No. Ed Sheeran? No. It is Joao Moreira, the Hong Kong public’s favourite jockey. Getting into the spirit of it all: Moreira with the clown, and some of his props. Photo: Kristen Manning Simon Leung and Angelin Chang conduct trackside interviews with, among others, a smiling Zac Purton (centre). Photo: Kristen Manning One of four jockeys (Australians Hugh Bowman, Zac Purton and Sam Clipperton are the others) to take part in interviews at the popular Trackside Breakfast With The Stars event at the annual Hong Kong International Races, Moreira had onlookers hanging on his every word.Conducted in a light, entertaining manner by Angelin Chang and Simon Leung, the interviews were focused on the upcoming rides of each jockey while local trainer Frankie Lui also gave interesting insights. The jockeys enjoy it too. “It’s great,” Purton said. “There is always a good vibe and it is extremely well done. Everyone seems to come together to tie all their media commitments in nicely while enjoying the build-up to the big day.” Between interviews, the international contenders strutted their stuff on the track in full view of a long row of tables that stretched down the Sha Tin straight. A generous buffet was provided, but food was not the main focus of attention, with fans writing notes in their form guides and keeping a close eye on each horse’s work. As the name implies, the Trackside Breakfast with the Stars featured a generous buffet alongside the racetrack for the fans. Photo: Kristen Manning Above and below, Moreira posed for photographs with young and old alike. Photos: Kristen Manning And, for those with young families, it was a rare chance to take their children to the track (those under 18 are generally unable to attend the races). They certainly made the most of the entertainment provided. The second longest queue after that forming to meet Moreira was for the clown, while arts and crafts tables were also popular. Such things have been seen on offer at Australian racecourses, but what stands out in Hong Kong is the focus on horses ... kids were making racing mementos, horse shoe ornaments and little stables. Being photographed with two Shetland ponies proved particularly popular. Photo: Kristen Manning Such was the popularity of having a photo taken with a couple of shetland ponies that children had to be allotted a particular time to take their turn. And adults wanted a go too! Of course there was also the pretend horse next to a row of mini-silks for kids to spend some quality ‘make believe I’m a jockey’ time. While some famous people from outside the sport are utilized to promote certain aspects of racing (such as the current Longines Ambassador Of Elegance, actor Eddie Peng, and predecessor Kate Winslet), the main focus is on horses and horse people. Horse-themed activities, popular jockeys and trainers. And each attendee was sent home with a gift - a horse racing cushion/blanket for adults, a horse pencil case for the kids. This type of promotion works - the breakfast selling out quickly each year. Merchandising is also intensely horse-focused. The on- and off-course shops are congested in December. A wide variety of products are on offer, ranging from Moreira and Purton T-shirts and drinking glasses to luggage tags, key rings and plush toys dedicated to current and past Hong Kong champions (Mr Stunning, who won the Hong Kong Sprint, was very popular this year), as well as jewellery, bags/purses/wallets and racetrack stationary sets. Meanwhile the week’s two race days, the Longines International Jockeys Championship night at Happy Valley on Wednesday, December 6, and the Longines Hong Kong International Races day at Sha Tin the following Sunday, just keep getting bigger and bigger. Turnover on the Sunday was up 5.4 percent on last year, at HK$1.6 billion, a record for the meeting. Attendance was down just slightly on last year, but that was a record anyway, and 94,560 people - nearly all of them there for the horses and the betting - make for an exciting atmosphere. Among the horses the fans got to see working during the Breakfast with the Stars event was subsequent Hong Kong Vase winner Highland Reel. Photo: Kristen Manning |

Big meeting to day.... Golden Sixty (1/10on) as expected won the G2 Jockey Club Mile by 1 1/2 lengths. In the G2 Jockey Club Sprint Hot King Prawn (3/1) finished the better of favourite Computer Patch by 3/4 length. While in the G2 Jockey Club Cup over 2000m Moriera's soft touch was just too good on Furore (7/5) as he over took Purton on Exultant (9/10on fav) in the straight. David Hayes picked up his fifth winner in the second race with Harmony N Blessed (6/4) leading all the way.

Purton Wins Third International Jockeys Championship Zac Purton has joined Douglas Whyte and Frankie Dettori as a triple
winner of the Longines International Jockeys' Championship, claiming the
title without a victory in the four-race series at Happy Valley Dec.
8 to add further luster to a phenomenal rsum.
Four days after overtaking Whyte as the winner of the most prize money as a jockey in Hong Kong racing history, Purton amassed 22 points with three seconds and a third under the 12 points for a win, six for second, and four for third format. The Australian's consistency propelled him to a third title in five
seasons in the HK$800,000 series, having previously triumphed in 2017
and 2020. |

Big Day in HK coming up this weekend. HK Sprint: Last year's Japanese winner Danon Smash returns to defend his crown but you've got to like the NZ bred Lucky Patch (El Roca -Gould) who has won his last two. Another NZ bred improver is Courier Warrior (Sacred Falls - Fabulist) but he may be a just short on class. Other Japanese runners like last start winner Pixie Knight (Maurice - Pixie Hollow) and Resistencia (Daiwa Major - Malacostumbrada) who won @ Chukyo in 1:07.20 might be just too tuff. Local OZ bred Hot King Prawn is getting on in age (7) but has won earlier this year. Had a bit of a break. David Hayes trained Naboo Attack (renamed Command'N'Conquer won 5 races in Qld) was second last start. HK Mile: HK immortal darling Golden Sixty will be the attraction on this card. Winner of 18 of 19 going for 16 straight. Lets not forget he was bred in OZ! Danon Kingly did defeat Gran Alegria over 1600m this year so he has a chance. Waikuku was second in a G2 last start. HK Derby winner Sky Darci has run 3rd last 3 starts. Aiden O'Brien brings 3YO filly Mother Earth here but she failed in the recent Breeders' Cup as favorite. HK Cup: Japanese runners are finally showing that they are tops. Breeders Cup winner Loves Only You is going to be very hard to beat if she runs to her last start performance especially since she has won here as well. Chilean Panfield won a G2 here this season and G1 last year over 2400m. Tourbillon Diamond (formerly OZ bred Eric The Eel) has also won a G3 this year. Dubai Honour 2nd last start in the G1 British Champion Stakes and won two G2s in France will be tested here. US G1 winner Bolshoi Ballet has been trying hard all year. O'Brien would love to snag a victory here with him. HK Vase: Aiden O'Brien trainer Mogul returns to defend his crown. G1 Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver is no slouch. Japanese entrant Glory Vase won this race in 2019 was second to Loves Only You earlier this year. Reliable Team is one of the better locals. Brazilian-bred Butterfield won a G3 earlier this year here. French filly Ebaiyra (Distorted Humor - Ebiyza) has challenged some nice winners this year.

Lyle was conscious and communicating. Purton out for rest of day. Other 2 jockeys I think ok. Amazing Star looked gone, Naboo Attack looked like he broke something. Other 2 horses seemed ok.

Loves Only You was ridden by Yuga Kawada who also rode her at Del Mar in the Breeders' Cup. She was all heart to hold of the other Japanese horse Hishi Iguazu. Naboo Attack (renamed Command'N'Conquer won 5 races in Qld) from the preview.

OK. Official result chart of the Sprint had Kawada finishing the race and not falling off Danon Smash. Beaten 70 odd lengths.... |
