SCORCHING sun one minute, thunder the next — today, Melbourne really will be the city with four seasons in one day. Forecasters are tipping a sunny, hot morning, with the temperature likely to reach 36C in the city by 1pm. But don’t get too settled under a beach umbrella — a cool change and blustery winds won’t be far away. The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting the temperature to start dropping to 21C by the early afternoon and there is a 50 per cent chance of rain. Thunderstorms are expected later, too, most likely worse in Melbourne’s northern and eastern suburbs. In northern Victorian, conditions will remain hot and dry, and authorities have issued a severe fire warning for the northern district near Shepparton. The CFA has contained a fire burning at Ancona, near Mansfield, but smoke warnings are in place and rural residents have been asked to remain vigilant, particularly as the wind strengthens this afternoon. Bureau forecaster Scott Williams said Swan Hill would likely be the hottest part of the state, at 41C. “It (the heat and wind) means the fire danger is elevated,” Mr Williams said. “Not much relief, in terms of cooler weather, for the north.” Back in Melbourne, a “gusty, cool change” will bring with it strong southerly winds. Severe wind warnings are in place for Port Phillip Bay. |

As some will have seen via PhillipCs' post, Gippsland is enjoying a bumper year, shows how large are the variances in Vi.
Drought-stricken Victorian farmers battle worst growing season in 130 years
Chris Hogan is among farmers in the Mallee town of Birchip coming to grips with the thought of another season of drought. Picture: Andrew Tauber FARMERS have suffered their worst growing season in 130 years. The soil is drier than when Victoria went through a decade of drought, with farmers in the state’s west going through the most sustained period of below average rainfall since 1889. And there’s little reprieve — below average rainfall is expected through to April. “The outlook doesn’t show any respite at all,” Bureau of Meteorology climatologist Kevin Smith said. Despite recent rain, Mr Smith said it wasn’t enough to get the west out of drought-like conditions. “It would probably take the best part of a year (of sustained rain) to even think about it,” he said. “Even a fortnight’s worth of rain is not enough.” It’s not good news for the agriculture sector — according to the Bureau, the soil hasn’t been drier since 1982. The Mallee region has been hit the hardest. “A lot of places are reporting less than 50 per cent rainfall and some are reporting the lowest on record since the ’80s, generally in the Mallee area,” Mr Smith said. Farmers in a 30km radius around the farming town of Birchip say they haven’t had decent rain since May 2013, while the local research centre found the area had suffered 14 years of below average rainfall. “We have officially moved into the worst season for growing for 130 years,” Birchip Cropping Group’s Tim McClelland said. “Our average rainfall for the last 20 years has been low. (Farmers) will be very worried.” The soil is so dry more than 15 per cent of crops around Birchip were left for livestock feed during the last harvest. With only a few grains in each husk, the cost of gathering the lacklustre crops outweighed the yield. Farmers harvested what they could and harvested early, but conditions were so bad they saw little return. Farmer Robbie Lee usually spends six weeks harvesting his crops. It took him just two days this past season. “Drought is part of farming, but it’s not good,” he said. “We’ll try again next season.” Birchip farmer Chris Hogan said his season’s yield came in at about 500 tonnes of grain — the year before he got 3500 tonnes. “We’ve done a bloody mighty job to get what we have,” he said. “But that’s the luck of the draw.” Even in drought, the soil can retain moisture to depth. But the Bureau found the soil moisture had dissipated due to extended rainfall deficiencies. “The longer we go on with these deficiencies the worse it gets,” Mr Smith said. “We need rainfall.” But we’re unlikely to get it. February and March are expected to see below average rainfall and above average temperatures. “Hopefully past February it might show some (rain) but we can’t see that at the moment,” Mr Smith said. “It’s not looking good.” |

Heavy rain and strong winds expected to hit Melbourne this eveningLARGE hailstones, heavy rain and damaging winds are expected to pelt parts of Melbourne this evening, with a severe thunderstorm warning issued for the city. The stormy conditions are expected to stretch into tomorrow, with the Bureau of Meteorology warning turbulent weather may even hold up Melbourne’s first cricket World Cup match between Australia and England. Bureau forecaster Richard Carlyon said storms were already lashing parts of the state’s west, northwest and Melbourne’s outer east, with wild weather detected between Ballarat and Geelong, Ouyen and Hamilton and along the Eastern Ranges. Mr Carlyon said thunderstorms were expected to make their way into metropolitan Melbourne “over the next few hours”. “We’re expecting localised heavy rain, with some falls of about 30mm in a short amount of time a possibility in Melbourne,” the forecaster said. “With the humidity that’s been building this week across Victoria, there’s certainly a possibility of rain. “There could also be large hail and damaging winds.” |

I long for the good old days when rain was just rain and a storm was just a storm. With twitter and so many news services, everything is now a major event.

Don't worry. In the long run it will be good for them. They need to come down to Victoria. And start again. God's Own country beckons them. No wonder migration to Victoria is at record levels. It is totally understandable that you cretins want to get to paradise.

You couldn't pay me to live in Melbourne.
Melbourne is such a depressing city, grey, tired, bleak, try hardish, the ugly sister etc. If it wasn't for Crown Casino you'd think you were in Auschwitz. Hope our good neighbours up in QLD are safe and sound ! |

Strong winds and heavy rain to hit Melbourne and regional Victoria SEVERE storms and strong winds have hit Melbourne and parts of Victoria. Wind gusts of more than 90km/h, rain that could cause flash flooding and large hailstones are expected, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. Melbourne is expected to hit a top of 29 degrees but the weather bureau this morning issued a severe weather warning for the city and regional Victoria. The Bureau of Meteorology says thunderstorms have hit Camberwell, Craigieburn, Dandenong, Footscray, Glen Waverley, Preston, Ringwood, St Albans, Gembrook, Gisborne, Daylesford, Ballan, Flowerdale and Marysville. The thunderstorms are moving towards the east to southeast of the city, and are forecast to affect Greensborough, Lilydale, Melton, Pakenham and Sunbury by 1:50 pm and Brighton, Caulfield, Healesville, Laverton, St Kilda and Williamstown by 2:20 pm. They are likely to hit Caulfield, Frankston, Glen Waverley, Greensborough and Melbourne CBD by 12:50pm. The Werribee train line has been suspended because of storm damage. Metro says buses have replaced trains on the Werribee line. There has been reports of hail damage to cars with thunderstorms in the Colac/Cressy area. Other areas expected to be hit include Geelong, Mildura, Horsham, Ballarat, Bendigo, Shepparton, Seymour, Maryborough, and Traralgon. Bureau forecaster Dean Sgarbossa said this morning that a line of thunderstorms extending from the Bellarine surf coast up to Ballarat was gradually making its way into Melbourne’s western suburbs. The Bureau warned that the storm line was forecast to lash Geelong, the area west of Geelong and Torquay by 11.20am, and Lara, Queenscliff and Sorrento by 11.50am. Senior Forecaster Scott Williams told 3AW there would be “fairly severe” weather in Melbourne until the middle of the afternoon. “Be prepared, batten down the hatches,” he said. |

RESIDENTS in Shepparton are being urged to stay indoors and protect themselves from a “particularly dangerous” storm and tornado. “There’s not even time to go outside and move your car under cover, just get inside and protect yourself and your loved ones,” a spokesman from the Bureau of Meteorology warned. The areas most in danger are Bairnsdale, Gippsland, Mansfield, Echuca and neighbouring regional towns. A hailstorm predicted for Melbourne today has passed the city by without any severe damage. “In Melbourne nothing is happening and nothing is going to happen,” the BOM spokesman confirmed. |

THREE people including a child are trapped after a tree fell on their home in Melbourne’s outer east.
Wild thunderstorms have struck Melbourne, bringing strong winds, lightning and heavy rain to the city. A tree fell on a home at The Patch about 9pm. Emergency services are working frantically to free the family. One child has been freed and is being treated by paramedics. Ambulance Victoria spokesman Paul Bentley said the child’s injuries did not appear to be serious. A change hit the city at about 8pm with the temperatures plummeting 10 degrees. The mercury had reached 32 degrees just after 6pm before it dropped to about 23C by 8.30pm. The change has been dragging a storm across Victoria, with thunder and lightning reported in western areas including Stawell |
