Talented horse. 7k seems viable. Hopefully he gets quality as well as quantity.

Haunui Announces Loss of Ferlax

22 January 2017

It is with great regret that Haunui Farm announces the loss of Group One Australian Guineas winner Ferlax this weekend after sustaining a paddock injury on Thursday afternoon. On the eve of transporting his first crop of yearlings to Karaka 2017, it’s certainly a bitter pill to swallow.

“We are quite devastated,” said Haunui Farm’s Managing Director, Mark Chitty. “We were privileged to have the opportunity to stand Ferlax on behalf of his owner, Jonathan Munz, and have worked closely with him and his Bloodstock Manager Dean Hawthorne to give Ferlax the best possible opportunity at stud. For something like this to happen before he’s even had a yearling go through the ring, let alone a runner on the track, is pretty tough.

“I’d like to thank everyone involved with giving their advice in regard to the injury Ferlax sustained. We certainly explored all of the options and there are vets all around the world who have been providing their thoughts and opinions over the past few days which we very much appreciate. In the end, the difficult decision was taken to euthanize Ferlax yesterday morning.

“I’d like to personally thank Jonathan and Dean for giving Haunui the opportunity to stand Ferlax and there’s no doubt in my mind that from the quality of the two crops we have on the ground and no doubt the one left to come, we will see some very good racehorses in the years to come. Jonathan put his full support behind the New Zealand industry by choosing to stand Ferlax here and to lose him at this early stage is certainly a blow not only to Haunui, but our breeding industry as we can ill afford to lose promising young stallions like this.”

Ferlax has been laid to rest overseeing the Haunui Farm parade ring.

A shame that his racing career was curtailed and now unfortunately his stallion career now also a brief one.

You can bet he'll sire a top galloper now he's passed away.

If i remember correctly, he wasn't the best behaved horse, actually i think he was crazy, but decided on Guineas day to put it all together.

They have a poor reputation that is for sure.

Australasian trainers have a poorer reputation for being unable to handle anything more spirited than a family pet.

I saw both Pentire and Ferlax at stud,  a few years ago.  Ferlax first year at stud.
Both were very well behaved and I couldnt fault them for manners.
I was allowed up close and personal to Pentire, and he didnt seem like a raging beast to me ??
Maybe they substituted a ring in ???

Pentire would have been around 20 years old?

I'm not a 'horse' person, i've never worked with them, but i'd assume even if a stallion is a naughty boy by the time his 20 years old he'll be slowing down quite a bit.

And as a PS.   I worked a lot some years ago now with clydesdales, and everyone has them pegged as the gentle giants.  A lot of them are.  But not all.  They still kick and bite just like other horses.
But one I worked with a lot was , by the time he crossed the rainbow bridge, almost 20 years old  and a gelding,  and the reason he crossed the bridge was because he almost killed me.
Just being a nasty nasty horse.
So its not only stallions, and age doesnt always slow them down.    Dont get that idea in your head.

Horses are are like humans, they're all different and I've found when breaking tb's in or dealing with Ott types that bulls are the grumpiest.
We have one particular bull at the farm, he couldn't get out of his shadow on the racetrack, but is a pretty decent jumper/hack, can be happy as Larry one minute, next thing he's thinking, biting, grunting and being a pig.

I just love dealing with them though, they don't talk back and generally are well behaved and do as they are told.
