Disagree, he’s achieved more than most and proved himself a champion. He’s retiring himself while he’s still sound. If he was a mare or stallion he would be happily munching green grass right now.
If they persist in racing this great horse and he breaks down, it will be shockingly bad PR for horse racing.
I would like to see a mandatory retirement age of 8 or 9 for geldings so that they are not raced until they can’t race......

Agreed.

If the owners want to keep forking out for the horse to be prepared for barrier trials i do not see the problem.

The horse is not being tortured.

How somebody can compare it with Survived is just idiotic in the extreme.

Not that extreme. One minute he is alive and well, the next is dead.

Racing NSW Stewards have given consideration to the requirement for Chautauqua to pass a barrier embargo, after again failing to jump from the barriers at the Rosehill Gardens barrier trials today.

Co-trainer John Hawkes advised Stewards that no firm decision has been made in respect to the gelding's racing future. He was advised that should a decision be made to continue to race the gelding, Racing NSW Stewards have determined that Chautauqua must barrier trial satisfactorily on two consecutive occasions prior to being permitted to race again.

Mr Hawkes indicated that should connections decide to continue to race the gelding, Chautauqua may be transported to his Melbourne stable.

After consulting with Racing Victoria Stewards and having regard to the frequency of official barrier trials in Victoria, Stewards have determined that should connections seek to have the requirement to barrier trial on two occasions lifted in Victoria, that Chautauqua could pass one of the two tests in a Victorian official jump out which is observed by the Stewards, consistent with the current practice in that state. However, the remaining test must be in an official barrier trial.

Mr Hawkes was advised that should Chautauqua fail to jump again, consideration may be given to whether the nominations of the gelding are accepted.

How is it any different? They're similar ages, both 'supposedly' perfectly sound.
Survived & other race day/training fatalities underline the fact that no matter how many experts stress they are sound, no one is infallible.
The only difference is the grey horse has worked out how to avoid breaking down irreparably.

He could just as likely break a leg galloping in his paddock.

It is a nonsense to compare them, it is hysterical nonsense.

I had a horse that we decided to retire. Spelling at a farm he jumped a fence and impaled himself on a log

Bottom line is he's a racehorse who gets fabulous care. He trains keenly and shows no indication of having had enough of that routine. Connections have every right to push on and if necessary try again in the autumn. Change of scenery might help but Im sure there is nothing we can tell that that they don't already know. Show him videos of Pakistan Star, buy some barriers and put his feed bin 50m up the track.

I think that's fair enough. I think a lot of consideration should be given.

Its almost like flogging a dead horse, isnt it.  Cry Its as if they are determined to beat him   ( as in win, not beat with a stick ),  and make him race, but they are too silly to see he has already won.  He has beat them and has no intention of jumping.  The more he wins at each jump out, the more confident he gets that  he can win the battle.  I dont care what they try, he isnt going to jump so they may as well give it up now.

I can understand the owners not wanting to give up , the horse has been sensational . $8.8 million in prizemoney and some outstanding wins , BUT he's an 8 yo and seemingly unwilling to race now, with age and wear and tear it won't be getting any easier for him . Looks like racing stewards will have the last day to his days of racing in Australia .

Yes, a racehorse who's won $8.8million & is a crowd favourite; so he's not allowed to retire? If he is, what would be the qualifying factors?
You say he gets fabulous care as no doubt do connections but does the horse agree?
Animals work on cause & effect, discover the cause & a positive result will ensue but some feed up the track? Do you think he's that hungry?

True - many at that level it is not about money. Congrats - Good pick up.

Righto then.  What IS it about ?  The horse doesnt feel right in himself, and doesnt want to be a race horse any more.  He has won millions.   He is a very smart horse that thinks for himself.  He is beating them at every turn.  The longer it goes on the more silly they are looking.  What do they intend to do ?  Shuttle him up and down the Hume Highway , and run him one way, then the other way, like a horse on a merry-go-round ?  And at the end of it, he is still going to beat them.
So you tell us, exactly what is it all about ??Confused

It is not really about anything.

We are putting Human emmotions into horses as though there is some rhyme or reason for his behavior.

The horse is not in any danger for staying in trainer, he is not being harmed.

The only thing being harmed is the owners hip pocket and that is no more than a pin prick.

Before I say what I want to I think he should be retired, so take this with that in mind.

What happens if he trials satisfactorily, gets into the Everest, and then after punters have backed him, he does not jump. The old days of stewards having to wear helmets at the race presentation will need to return.

But what happens if he gets to the Everest, jumps and wins, when he is at $21. The punters would be even more demonstrative.

The stewards are on a hiding to nothing here. If he races and runs well, or does not run well, then they will be hounded by punters, and if he runs and breaks down the animal rights groups will be all over them like spots on grandma.

If the owners can not make a decision, then the authorities should make it for them and it seems by that statement from Racing Victoria, they have given the horse two more chances, and if he misses the jump in the first, that is it.

I agree however, the horse is making the humans around him look more silly than he is.
Remember, it might take intelligence to be smart , but it takes experience to be wise

Skippy is 100% correct. They are not chasing the money. They already have that. It’s the prestige and glory they seek. In this case it’s more chasing the fairytale ending. Unfortunately it’s coming at the expense of dignity for them and the horse. Getting banned from racing is not how a champion like him should bow out.

This sort of thing is quite common . Like everything else with horses it's always easier to make sure it doesn't develope in the first place rather than trying to cure it. The first time he stood in the barriers he should never have been put straight on the pony and taken back to be unsaddled. They should have taken him out of barriers and gotten the jockey to gallop him around the track on his own . A good strong gallop. That would be telling the horse you're not getting out of work mate. As it is Chautauqua has come to the conclusion that he doesn't have to go to work . I love horses! I was told early on there is is no such thing as a horse expert because as soon as you think you know what you're doing one will come along and make you look like an idiot.! I feel a bit sorry for John Hawkes.

The real and final decision on his future lays with the owner, not John.....those of you that own and pay up for horses know that.....therefore, the owner should [IMO] put the horse first, he's obviously not enjoying his racing, [the horse that is] so how can the owner? what, get up SAT morning, have brekkie, read the papers/ipad, shower, dress, drive to the races......and hope? hope that he jumps that is? and funnily enough so does the punter that day...and the trainer...and the jock....hope......well racing in general is all about hope, but hells bells, the horse aint happy people, it doesn't matter he might be carrying an injury, he might hurt himself when extending when jumping out? who knows? he jumped in the Flemington jumpout, what if he niggled himself then, and at Rosehill had a wee think about it....what if?.....Mr Owner, do yourself a favour, tell John how it is, protect the horse, the punter and yourself.....you'll earn more adulation if you put out a press release saying, ''that's it''....than the alternative......good luck to you if you do. Remember the horse owes you nothing, you owe the horse.
