Ziggy Switkowski was repeatedly warned his plan to defend the NBN police raids breached the rules. Went ahead anyway

why on earth do they announce raids on peoples offices looking for documents, do they also announce raids on drug houses on the TV so they have chance to get rid of the evidence..??

honestly these things are done right in front of our faces and no one stops to question why..??

life is one huge fraud..

Arhhhhhh Malcom you have done it again

The National Broadband Network has dumped its plan to use Optus cables to deliver high-speed broadband less than a year after rubbishing reports the $800 million network it purchased from the telco was in a dire state and may be unusable.

NBN... here's another example of the dearth of talent in Parliament and the APS over the last decade.

How the kiss is this still a thing for discussion and planning?

Get on with it.

This sort of technology is a game changer for the NBN and when it comes it will probably involve a Govt bailout of NBN co . All of the major telcos are gearing up for the possibility of 5G to the home type internet and bypassing NBN co services which will be too expensive , and the minor players are looking nervous .

The internet is a dogs breakfast of technologies and looks set to get worse , but the right technology looks likely to be Fibre to 5G towers from what I can understand .

Unless things have changed dramatically in recent months, mobile tech requires thousands of towers and as such is only useful in densely populated areas where people are less likely to object to them being built. Haven't bothered reading of late because I'm tired of waiting for even a second rate FTTN option.

The linked article is talking about technology to get faster speeds out of FTTP, which only a few lucky Australians will get under the Turnbull model. The rest of us will either have to put up with declining copper from the node to house or pay for fibre to the house to be installed (or ignore the NBN totally and go congested mobile). Last I read the node technology proposed by the Libs will not be upgradeable to meet emerging standards and speeds.

As far as I'm aware the mobile 5g technology would be covered in a similar fashion for tower placement as the current mobile phones and use the existing towers but just upgrade them . The big telco's wouldn't be overly worried about country coverage as there is not enough money in it .
Fttp will always be the best option but the cost is prohibitive and nbn co will go broke under the current model trying to roll out even the existing plan . They have to significantly increase the price of their service to anyone who uses it to even hope to cover their costs .
That is why the large telcos with their own infrastructure will be able to undercut nbn co pricing structure with 5g type technology . The smaller telcos who've signed up to nbn co with no other choice will be stuck with an expensive and outdated system that will also see them go broke .
It's a mess . I'll find an article from one of the smaller telcos that explains it better than me .

FCC Chairman: Path to 5G Still Rife With Challenges

By Todd R. Weiss  |  Posted 2016-09-07

Support for 5G will have to be earned from small governments, with the focus on how the faster network can help communities, he said.

LAS VEGAS—Today's 4G mobile networks are fast and offer more performance than previous iterations, but the upcoming 5G networks will be so much faster and offer far more capabilities that the possibilities are almost endless, according to FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler.

But to get there, many key steps still remain, including getting local officials in municipalities across the nation to agree to the installation of 5G equipment to support the higher speeds and greater productivity that the next-generation wireless systems will offer, Wheeler said in the opening keynote at the CTIA Super Mobility 2016 conference at the Sands Expo Center.

To do that, said Wheeler, the wireless industry needs "to tell the story of what 5G is—and not just in terms of technology, but as deliverables that mean something to real people," he said. "We will be unsuccessful in dealing with [not-in-my-backyard critics] and the recalcitrance of local authorities if all we talk about is engineering. We may all love the fabulous engineering in 5G, but if we want the technology to be successfully deployed, we need to talk about its benefits for people and their communities."

All of this comes into play, he said, because while there are just over 200,000 cell towers in the United States, millions of small cell sites will be required for the deployment of 5G and that means that planning and locating them will take the understanding and cooperation of small governments across the country. "If siting for a small cell takes as long and costs as much as siting for a cell tower, few communities will ever have the benefits of 5G," Wheeler warned. "We recognize that this is a major concern and are committed to working to lessen these burdens and costs to ensure that 5G is available nationwide, while respecting the vital role that the communities themselves play in the siting process."

The nature of 5G technology "makes the review and approval by community siting authorities, and the associated costs and fees, all the more critical," he said. "We have to help leaders at the local level—and all levels for that matter—understand that 5G will make the internet of things real. But even talking about IoT is too obtuse. Let's talk about the benefits of smart-city energy grids, safer transportation networks, and new opportunities to improve health care. Let's paint the picture of how 5G will unleash immersive education and entertainment industries, and how 5G will unlock new ways for local employers to grow, whether it's a small specialty shop or a large factory, creating new jobs and improving services for the community."

By reframing the efforts as beneficial to the public, business, education and local health facilities, 5G will be an easier sell, he said. "5G is not a technology. It is a revolution."

What also needs to be stressed to local governments and others, said Wheeler, is that "the nature of 5G technology doesn't just mean more antenna sites, it also means that without such sites the benefits of 5G may be sharply diminished."

Past neighborhood battles about cell phone towers "didn't necessarily mean sacrificing the advantages of obtaining service from a distant cell site," said Wheeler. "With the anticipated 5G architecture, that would appear to be less feasible, perhaps much less feasible" if opponents want to block the installation of needed antenna equipment.

One possibility might come from past history in the wireless industry, said Wheeler, when in 2001 Cingular and T-Mobile undertook a joint venture called Empire, which let them share each other's spectrum and infrastructure in three states. That enabled both companies to quickly fill coverage needs while avoiding the costs of building out redundant infrastructure, said Wheeler.  "The deal was dissolved when Cingular purchased AT&T Wireless, but it was considered a success."

Wheeler said he's "not endorsing shared infrastructure in all circumstances, and [is] certainly not opening the door to consolidation. But I am saying that if we're talking about thousands of antennas in a city, and you've got four carriers, and we are serious about leading the world in 5G deployment in our very large and spread-out country, then we ought to explore creative options on how best to build that infrastructure."

To help out, the FCC "is committed to cutting red tape. We've streamlined our environmental and historic preservation rules, and tightened our 'shot clock' for siting application reviews," he said. The agency is also working hard to make wireless spectrum available for the development and expansion of 5G capabilities, he said.

Security and privacy for the faster 5G networks will also be critical, as will the development of 5G infrastructure and capabilities in rural parts of the nation, he said. "The bottom line is that there is a road map to chart our 5G future. And now is the time to make it happen. Let's lead the world in 5G deployment the way we led the world in 4G, giving U.S. developers a home field advantage in creating the apps and services of tomorrow."

I stand corrected on 5G PT and 3BM . As with any new technology it has problems ,but if it is a technically vastly superior product with a competitive advantage they will find a way to do it .

The complaining by the smaller telcos as outlined in the above article may be a bit of political posturing as well as a bit of truth on NBN Co .

Technical Issue: My wireless internet went down for a week at the end of Sept & due to being unable to work on rooves during wet weather, were unable to attend untill it dries out.
The guy spent 3hrs to find nothing wrong so the server techies managed to readjust the modem & all was well..............for a few days.
Down she went again & a young guy came out. Apparently the paddock near the house with its' 3 sides of tall cypress trees act like a concrete barrier when they get wet so the signal drops out.
He managed to raise it a fraction which in turn improved signal strength marginally & said if it recurs, he'll bring an extension next time.
Apparently many are affected & they're presently testing new technology to avert it.
Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!

👏👏👏👏👏. Well done turdbull

Customer complaints about NBN connections are up by 63 per cent, and complaints about NBN line faults are up nearly 150 per cent, according to the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman's 2015-16 annual report released today. The NBN now accounts for almost 12 per cent of TIO complaints.

I'm 1.2km from the exchange and on ADSL2+ now. NBN sent me a letter a fortnight ago saying that I can now get NBN- fixed wireless.  Fixed wireless! That's what my brother is on and he's 6k out of town.

The NBN is rolling out at the rate of 35,000 new connections a week under the direction of Prime Minister Turnbull and the LNP (was about 1 household per decade under Labor!), and complaints are only up 63%Clap

Congratulations NBN Co, you are a credit to Australian ingenuity ... a great product, clearly endorsed by it's users, and creating jobs and growth!!! Thumbs Up

My experience has been no different i.e. out for a week a couple of months ago, days x 2 twice since & constant dropouts of hours duration on some occasions, including today Angry
My landline runs in tandem so the PAYG mobile costs have rocketed from <$10/year to about $40+ in the last 3mths, all incurred phoning the server Angry. The latter do credit pro rata but a) it's not their fault & b) it doesn't cover extra phone & other costs, not to mention inconvenience. No wonder businesses are screaming!

I'm happy to say I have switched over to NBN satellite.(remote location aparently Ermm)
I'm paying only half of what I was before with the Telstra Bundle (AKA big stinking bundle of crap) so I am getting a tremendous product for a small outlay.

Very quick to instal too, less than a week after I called them the NBN is up and running.
The installer told me they can't keep up with the demand. They can't work weekends to connect new customers because it is government owned so there is no personel working at HQ.

One downside. I'll need to keep an eye on my usage because the speed is so fast.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left

Many thanks scamanda for your timely post Big smile My brother, nr. Deniliquin, is moving residence & has been unhappy with Telstra wireless for ages so I did some research & he can get Iinet + mobiles (2) for cheaper, more data, unlimited calls & decent speeds Thumbs Up
He couldn't do his own legwork due to constant dropouts so I was also able to get him a better energy plan too.

This is one of my major complaints with the Libs , Abbott played politics with the NBN and we will left in the dust by places like NZ and Kazakstan etc.. . It will hurt Australian productivity and business into the future untill we go all fibre .
Anyone outside the city i.e. regional and country will be seriously left behind in the future with approx 2% to 5% of city speeds if even that .

Have a look at company called My Republic who have just set up in Australia .
