Back to the original post of "bred to stay" and why Australian racing/owners/trainers don't seem to embrace breeding stayers, it's not hard to work out.

Our filly will have her first start on Saturday as a 3yo. The "owners" who are racing her have only been paying since Feb this year, so the cost of the broodmare, service fee, agistment as a young horse, the breaking in, the insurance and every other cost you can imagine has already been covered.

Without those expenses it has cost $20,000 to get her to the races! And the expectation is that we'll only have a run or two and she'll be out for another spell with an autumn campaign in mind. If she'd been a precocious 2yo Magic Millions sprinter it would have been half that with the added bonus of the possibility of a cheque or two. But where's the fun in that?

If they race at 3, the cost can be anywhere up to $50- 60k before having their first start. That is a massive amount of input costs!

2 city wins in its first prep may get you to about breakeven.....how hard is that!

Assumes u r paying for agistment. One of the reasons I am looking at NZ. Agistment costs are half that of Aus.

I'm very keen on Last Wish in the first at Randwick.  They bet $8.00 early, now $6.50 is best.

By Guillotine (Montjeu) out of a Zabeel mare. Doesn't get much stouter than that!

Trained by top trainer Tony McEvoy and last start easy winner over 2400m.  I expect him to improve a couple of lengths off that run.

Your logic being he's better when he leads?  Maybe, but I think he's just unreliable.

He didn't like being boxed up last start.

When he jumped from in distance he was good.

2000>2000>2400 off a 7 day back up.

Yeah, I don't disagree with your logic.  I was on him last start and wasn't happy they didn't try harder to lead.  Still, earlier in his career he won from behind.  I just think he's not genuine.

The Godolphin filly Liturgy having a third run at 1200m.  Should be a 1600-2000m horse??

Is there an Aussie horse more bred to stay than Zatopaz? By Zabeel out of a Prized mare and granddam by Noble Bijou. Zatopaz is a half brother to Nom Du Jeu (won AJC Derby). His dam, Prized Gem, won the Brisbane Cup when it was still a G1 run over 3200m.

Remains to be seen how much ability Zatopaz has, but he has steadily improved in his 6 start career and won his first start recently at Gosford over 2600m.

Zatopaz steps up sharply in grade to the St Leger over 2800m at Flemington on Saturday. One thing's for sure he will run the trip stronger than most.

Just ran behind the placings in the 900m 2yo scamper at Sandown.

Bound to improve over further. Oaks filly.

Does anybody know Paul Rocke the trainer of this filly ?

He had her nominated for a listed 1200m at Flemington on Saturday but chose instead to run her over a 1000m at Cranbourne on Friday night.

Despite the massive class difference I would have preferred to see her in the Flemington race.

Her progeny will be good value when she is retired to stud.

She has been butchered as a racehorse and as such has not reached and will not reach her full potential meaning her foals will be cheaper when sold at sales.
