But all the media talk was about the higher maximums, which feeds the global warming alarm. Telling the full story does not have the same impact.

I saw that some place in WA's Pilbara recorded 39.6* over winter. Don't want to spend Christmas up there.

Hey PT, you caught the bad news about the burqua ban from the Nats Conference, but you failed to mention the GOOD NEWS!PartyBeer

Nationals call on Federal Government to phase out renewable energy subsidies

The National Party has used its federal conference in Canberra to call on the Federal Government to eliminate subsidies for renewable energy.

The plan involves freezing subsidies at their current levels for 12 months, then phasing them out entirely over five years.

Let's get rid of the fossil fuel subsidies too, starting with the Fuel Tax Credit Scheme- that will save $6 billion a year.Wink

Terrible thing those renewable energy subsidies- shameful waste of money.Wacko

In the report, “Empty Promises: G20 subsidies to oil, gas and coal production”, researchers found G20 support to fossil fuel production alone ($452 billion) was almost four times the entire global subsidies for renewable energy ($121 billion).

So Fossil Fuel Subsidies are ALMOST 4 times renewable subsidies!

and Fossil Fuel accounts for 92% of Global power generation.

Obviously you have done the maths Tlaz ...?

So you agree that it's clear that renewables are disproportionately subsidised, based on the small, expensive, unreliable contribution they make to the global grid ...

Great point TlazThumbs Up

... so it goes without saying, that if we cut all subsidies, NO ONE would put money into renewables, least of all Australia's biggest coal-fired power producing hypocrites, AGL ... right?Wink

The best Australian brain around our Politics ( Peta Credlin ) has said .. Malcolm,     DUMP the renewable energy shxt or perish at the next election.
Peta has been on tour around Queensland , getting the feel of the peoples concerns .    She said only one person mentioned SSM as an issue but power prices and reliability is the BIG CONCERN.
Common sense should tell us , Climate Change is bull shxt and why destroy our present by a deluded fear of the future.
The Big storm they are now saying " worst since 1921 "   .    What caused the climate BS back then.

But don't you recall the outcry for renewable energy back in 1921 maccamax!? ... oh, that's right, there were no subsidies for renewable energy fraudsters in 1921, so it was just called another "Natural Disaster" or some more "Bad Weather" ...

Likewise, if we have a Category 5 hurricane, by definition, we've had them before!Tongue

... if they were fair dinkum, they would have called it a Category 5.5 ... LOL

PT , We have been there before.

They won 19 seats and won Government .     Knifed by Turnbull's Bush Rangers, who have lost 14 seats and are down so far in the polls another 16 seats will fall.

Your brighter than that question.

AGL calls Coalition bluff on Liddell, focuses on solar, wind and storage

By Giles Parkinson9/11/2017

liddellAGL Energy has called the bluff of the federal Coalition over the future of Liddell, pointing out that the ageing coal plant is unreliable and stating its clear focus is on replacing the capacity with renewable energy and storage.

CEO Andy Vesey agreed to take the government’s proposal to extend the life of the coal generator or sell it to the company board, but that commitment is likely to be nothing more than a face-saver for a Coalition government pushed into the realms of stupid by its desperation to appease its right wing and the Nationals.

There is no way the AGL board would approve a proposal not favoured by Vesey, and the CEO has clearly other plans afoot, and they are all about renewables, peaking plants and storage.

“Short term, new development will continue to favour renewables supported by gas peaking,” Vesey said after a meeting in Canberra with prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, energy minister Josh Frydenberg, and deputy prime minister and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce.

“Longer term, we see this trend continuing with large scale battery deployment enhancing the value of renewable technology. In this environment, we just don’t see new development of coal as economically rational, even before factoring in a carbon cost,” Vesey said in a statement.

And he made clear in this statement that Liddell would retire, as planned. “Following today’s meeting with the Prime Minister, we have committed to deliver a plan in 90 days of the actions AGL will take to avoid a market shortfall once the Liddell coal-fired power station retires in 2022.”

And for good measure, he tweeted that line …. “once the Liddell coal-fired power station retires in 2022.”

agl vesey tweet

AGL also made a nonsense of the Coalition claim that extending Liddell would increase energy security, pointing out that Liddell was “unreliable” and had failed to deliver even half of its capacity during the February 10 heatwave. It says it will have to spend $159 million keeping it together even before the stated 2022 closure.

“Since AGL acquired Liddell from the NSW Government in 2015, AGL has invested $123 million in the plant to improve reliability,” it said in its statement.

“Despite this investment, during the February 2017 heatwave, two units from Liddell were out of the market due to unforeseeable boiler tube leaks. As a result, there was not enough energy in the system and NSW experienced blackouts in parts of the State.”

liddell heatwave

Indeed, as the NSW Liberal energy minister Don Harwin has pointed out, it was renewable energy sources that kept the lights on in NSW in february (apart from the Tomago smelter which was forced to load shed when two gas plants failed).

“As Liddell approaches the end of its life in 2022, it will likely experience more unanticipated outages, which is why we will spend a further $159 million to improve reliability at Liddell before it closes,” Vesey said.

Experts have suggested it would cost between $500 million and $1 billion to keep it going another 5 years. AGL says the rehabilitation costs for both Liddell and Bayswater amount to a further $880 million.

And AGL made clear that it would be a better idea to spend that sort of money on other technologies, and that the future was clearly in renewables, accompanied by storage, areas where it intends to spend $2 billion.

“The best way to address pricing challenges in the market is to increase supply. We’re investing more than anyone else in building new supply to drive down prices and stand ready to invest more when there is certainty on carbon policy,” sai Vesey.

AGL’s plan to give Turnbull a plan of its actions that AGL to avoid a market shortfall once Liddell is retired is entirely consistent with its previously stated policy of investing in wind and solar, and delivering “storage ready” projects and ultimately turning the Liddell site into a renewable energy hub with wind, solar and storage.

It would be bizarre to think that AGL is obliged to come up with all the new capacity to replace Liddell (8,000GWh a year), given that AEMO has called for a new market mechanism to deliver the dispatchable generation required, and its observation that a national renewable energy target would deliver a large amount of the power needed to avoid any risk of shortfalls (and 45 per cent renewables by 2030).

Frydenberg said that AEMO had made clear that “time is of the essence”. But AEMO also made clear that it was referring to the need for credible national policies designed to ensure enough dispatchable generation.

It also made clear that ageing coal plants of the like of Liddell did not fit the bill of fast and flexible capacity that would be needed in times of peak demand such as heatwaves. Indeed, such generators were likely to be the cause of problems rather than the solution.

Nothing new here! - AGL are simply a mercenary retail company, whose mandate is to generate profits for shareholders.

If the government is subsidising one form of energy, like say expensive, unreliable renewable energy, at a much higher rate than other alternatives, they will look to take advantage of that, of course!

If they believe that the consumer will believe their discredited advertising, and they are not going to be brought to account over it, they will continue with that campaign, preying on the naivety and the guilt and self loathing that the Climate Alarmists have fostered in the SJW community.

The government is maneuvering as we speak to make AGL the scapegoat, and reason for a change to the subsidy structure, and ensure that the free market takes advantage of our cheap reliable and "clean" coal ... AGL wins either way of course!

This WILL win the LNP the next election ... in conjunction with the reliable old "Safe Boarders/Children Overboard" campaign ... scare mongering + money in pockets? ... can't lose!Thumbs Up

The ALP will sack Bullgelati Bill and jump on the coal bandwagon before the next election, just too late I'm afraid ...Dead

Please note :    We all have access to google . no need to have us read it on here .
Flannery said it wouldn't rain again . Dams would dry up etc.
Put in desalination plants were a must.     At what a cost by falling for the great delusion on weather.
Renewables the same.
What we need is common sense , let nature do it's climate work without interference.

Like The deluded climate change group , we did wake on 24/9/2017.

Some other mad freaks predicted that yesterday was to be the end of the world.

To add to the glory , it is 5 months today since I stopped smoking.

To add to the pain ,   I may have to start smoking to get off the Nicorettes.

Hold frim Macca.
I reckon for some, with the heat and wind and fires raging yesterday, it would have felt like the end of the world.  Was 36 here and not even out of Sept yet.  Today is the same.  Hope no one drops a match around here, or anywhere for that matter.  Been no rain at all since mid July .
This wind is bad.
Think of our firies.  And the wild life.

A lot in what you say Max.     I really enjoy a fag,   and a cigarette too.     . Mad over-reaction to Cigarettes and health . Was getting a bit congested,      Taxed out of reach eventually.
Hasn't made any difference to me , health wise.
Attack the worlds greatest menace in the same way . Alcohol, would make more sense.   It is cheaper with the over production of wines.

Quit the darts 13 years ago macca, still have dreams that I'm lighting up! ... love nothing better than standing with the smokers at a bbq and breathing deeply ... gee I loved smoking!Hug

So I took up cigars last Christmas, not regularly, but just on special occasions, with a good red or a whiskey (or both) ... so only had maybe 5 or 6 cigars in 9 months, and much more enjoyable, with different distinctive flavors ... don't inhale, so no worse than walking around in the city for a few hours!
