So you too Shrunk, like Mal and Joh, presumably don't understand the Separation of Powers concept either?

You'd presumably then advocate that the Judiciary has the right to continually tell politicians how to go about their business.  Confused

Ministers to be hauled before Supreme Court after criticising terror sentencing

Josh Gordon, Benjamin Preiss

Published: June 14 2017 - 7:12PM

Besim pleaded guilty to planning a terrorist attack in 2015 to behead a police officer on Anzac Day.

The Court of Appeal last Friday also heard challenges by Commonwealth prosecutors to the sentences imposed last year on a teenager who built a bomb and planned to detonate it on Mother's Day the same year; and Hassan El Sabsabi, who sent $16,000 to a contact who planned to fight in Syria.

Besim, 20, was jailed for 10 years, but must serve 7½ years before he is eligible for parole.

The teenager – who has not been named – was jailed for seven years and must serve at least five; and El Sabsabi was spared further jail having served 44 days in custody when arrested in 2014.

Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions Sarah McNaughton, SC, said the intentions of both the teenager, known as MHK, and Besim were to terrorise and kill Australians on home soil.

The ministers may have to toe the line for opening their mouths about such trivial crimes. How dare they represent the Australian public.

One guy planned to behead a police officer. He can have another crack at it in 7.5 years so why worry.

One planned to detonate a bomb. He's only got 5 years min to wait to build another one so stay tuned.

And one for financing terrorism. He's free to continue on his merry way having served 44 days. 44 days for financing terrorism is a very harsh sentence and surely he would be totally rehabilitated after only half that time.

Manus Island class action: government to compensate former detainees in huge settlement

Michael Koziol

Published: June 14 2017 - 11:11AM

The Australian government has agreed to compensate 1900 asylum seekers currently or formerly held at the Manus Island detention centre, in what may be Australia's largest ever human rights-related settlement.

"If Slater and Gordon settle with the Commonwealth then it is likely that we will seriously consider withdrawing the proceedings in PNG," he told Fairfax Media earlier on Wednesday.

More to come

This story was found at: http://www.smh.com.au/federal-politics/political-news/manus-island-class-action-government-to-compensate-former-detainees-in-huge-settlement-20170613-gwqlu3.html

Is that the same Manus Island detention centre the ALP opened PT?
Seems we are still picking up the mess from when they were in charge.

Hell they even have Julia Gillard's old employers Slater and Gordon involved.
Jobs for the boys gone wild.LOL

What and undo all the hard work done by Julia? Let the detainees into Australia?
LOL Yeah the Australian public would just love to see illegal boat people given the clear.

Didn't the ALP agree the Manus Island detainees shouldn't be allowed into Australia at the last election?
And nearly all things liberal when it came to border security?

It's a bit hard to tidy up a mess when such a good job is made of making it.

No second sitting as iftar dinner too hard for Turnbull to digest

Malcolm Turnbull will not have a second iftar dinner with Islamic leaders after he became the first Australian prime minister to host the Ramadan feast at Kirribilli House last year — an event that cost taxpayers $33,694.

The Australian was informed yesterday there would be no second iftar, with last year’s event being overshadowed by the attendance of Sheik Shady Alsuleiman, the national president of the Australian National Imams Council, given his past comments about homosexuals.

The Prime Minister was forced to condemn his comments, Sheik Alsuleiman having said AIDS was a “divine punishment” for homosexuals, and adulterers should be stoned to death.

The Islamic preacher — born in Sydney to an Arab-Palestinian family that migrated to Australia in the late 1960s — had also once called on God to “destroy the enemies of Islam”.

In front of appalled colleagues, including a number of cabinet ministers, Abbott persisted with a stream of unpleasant abuse directed at Laundy. This was after the MP had responded to his first interjection by noting that, while he didn't agree with anything Abbott said, he had politely listened to him put his position at great length and expected the same courtesy. According to a number of sources, Abbott then invited Laundy to "go f**k yourself". Shocked

Wonder how many Chinese students Andrew directed to ASM after he accepted his controversial Chinese appointment five minutes after he departed from the political sphere?

Australian School of Management's registration cancelled

The Australian School of Management (ASM) has had its registration cancelled by the Turnbull Government.

It is the latest blow to 800 business and hospitality students who have been left in limbo following the financial collapse of ASM's owner Careers Australia last month.

Students have been locked out of its Perth and Melbourne campuses ever since and had been hoping that the voluntary administrators for Careers Australia would be able to find a buyer so they could continue their studies.  However, the loss of registration makes that unlikely.

It is a spectacular fall from grace for ASM, which was chaired by former Federal Trade and Investment Minister Andrew Robb.

The texts that could cost three government ministers their jobs

Peter Martin

Published: June 21 2017 - 11:45PM

Rarely do we get to see how newspaper stories are made.

Nine days ago, across almost the entire width of its front page, The Australian published a headline that read: Exclusive: Judiciary "light on terrorism".

"Senior ministers including a member of Malcolm Turnbull's cabinet have launched an extraordinary attack on the Victorian judiciary, claiming it was advocating lighter sentences for terrorists as part of 'ideological experiments'," the article said.

The ministers were Greg Hunt, who is responsible for health, Michael Sukkar, who is responsible for housing, and Alan Tudge, who is in charge of Centrelink.

They had been talking about a court case, the transcript of which we now know they hadn't read. All three were relying on no more than an ABC Online report, according to evidence given under oath on their behalf by the Commonwealth Solicitor-General.

Each had sent a single text message to Simon Benson, national affairs editor of The Australian. One was sent at 12.36 pm on the Monday afternoon, one at 12.43 pm, and the last at 1.42 pm. They weren't sent in response to questions.

Hunt's text said: "Comments by senior members of the Victorian courts endorsing and embracing shorter sentences for terrorism offences are deeply concerning — deeply concerning." State courts should not be places for "ideological experiments".

Sukkar bemoaned "Labor's continued appointment of hard-left activist judges".

Tudge said some were "divorced from reality". They seemed "more concerned about the terrorists than the safety of the community".

Benson packaged their texts with quotes from judges at the hearing in question, all but one of which he took from the ABC website.

His lawyer confirmed that, like the ministers, he had no other source.

The Victorian Court of Appeal had been considering the sentence handed down for two men convicted of terrorism over a plan to run down and behead a police officer at an Anzac Day march in 2015.

What infuriated the judges was that they hadn't yet made a decision.

The minister's texts, amplified through The Australian, could be seen as an attempt to influence their decision. Much worse, they ran the risk of being damned whether they took account of them or not.

"On the one hand if we dismiss the appeals, then we will be accused of engaging in an ideological experiment or being hard-left activist judges, or on the other hand, if we increase the sentences ... the respondents may have an understandable grievance that we were doubtlessly affected by what three prominent ministers for the Crown had to say," Chief Justice Marilyn Warren said.

"Can I add to that?" added Justice Stephen Kaye. "If we dismiss the appeals, it may be said we are reacting, perhaps overreacting, against the content of what your client said."

The technical term is "scandalising the court". Justice Kaye said he had never seen anything like it in more than 40 years in the law. Warren and Justice Mark Weinberg agreed.

The three had invited the three ministers to appear before them on Friday to explain why they should not be tried for criminal contempt of court.

It was their last and only opportunity to put a case before the judges decided whether to refer their conduct to the Office of Public Prosecutions. None turned up. Instead, they sent the Commonwealth Solicitor-General Stephen Donaghue, QC, who made it clear he was representing them in their "role as ministers within our system of government".

He had his work cut out. The video shows him opening by reading a statement in which the ministers neither withdrew what they had said nor apologised.

Then after 39 minutes of excruciating questioning, he received his own text.

"I have just received instructions from Mr Sukkar that he is content to expressly withdraw the statement about hard left activist judges," he informed the court.

"Does he apologise for it? He doesn't apologise," Kaye noted, amid nervous laughter from the packed public gallery.

"Sounds like somebody's on the telephone," Weinberg observed, before adding: "Could I ask whether any of your three clients are lawyers or legal practitioners with any experience in the law at all?"

All three were lawyers. None had turned up.

"In other instances where these kinds of developments have occurred, the minister has taken the opportunity to retract the statement and apologised to the Court," the Chief Justice pointed out.

And then another text, amid more nervous laughter. "My instructions have evolved somewhat in the course of the morning," Donaghue stammered. "I can convey to the Court that I have received instructions to withdraw three of the statements in the article."

"Ideological experiments" and "divorced from reality" were also withdrawn.

And, on further questioning, the statement about the judges being appointed by Labor governments was withdrawn.

They had "multiple appointments to judicial offices for governments of both the Coalition and Labor," Warren pointed out.

Hunt, Sukkar, and Tudge may have left it too late for an apology. If it goes to trial and they are convicted, they could lose their seats.

But there's a potential upside. They would most likely be replaced by ministers with a clearer knowledge of the law who devoted attention to health, housing and Centrelink.

Shocked Shocked

Andrew Bolt: Christopher Pyne drops Malcolm Turnbull’s plan for Liberals on same-sex marriage

Andrew Bolt, Herald Sun

CHRISTOPHER Pyne has let slip what seems Malcolm Turnbull’s final explosive plan for the Liberal Party he’s turned into Labor-lite.

The Defence Industry Minister last Friday tipped the Turnbull Government would deliver same-sex marriage, and grinned: “It might even be sooner than everyone thinks.”

This suggests the Prime Minister is secretly plotting to break an election promise to hold a people’s vote to decide this divisive issue — or will be forced to it by the party’s dominant Left.

But Pyne’s boasting at a Sydney bar is likely to instead trigger a revolt from conservative MPs already furious that Turnbull has signed up the Liberals to Labor-style policies on global warming, school funding and debt.

Copying Labor’s position on same-sex marriage as well will be the final insult.

Pyne’s prediction could detonate an explosion that destroys the party and Turnbull’s leadership.

But Pyne, a key Turnbull loyalist, sounded excited on Friday when he addressed a reception of the “Black Hand” — Left-wing Liberal MPs and supporters — before the party’s federal council.

Shouting at Star Casino’s Cherry Bar loud enough to be heard outside, Pyne spoke as if the Liberal Left’s greatest enemy was not Labor but the Liberal Right, including former Prime Minister Tony Abbott.

To an audience including Attorney-General George Brandis and backbencher Trent Zimmerman, Pyne gloated that the party’s Left — called “moderates” by the media — had “waxed and waned” but the faction was now triumphant.

“Two years ago … Malcolm Turnbull was the communications minister and now he’s the Prime Minister.

“So I would say that our fortunes are pretty good at the moment. And most of your senior cabinet ministers, George Brandis, [Defence Minister] Marise Payne, yours truly — quite a few of us are very senior ministers in a Turnbull Government.

“Now there was a time when people said it wouldn’t happen, but George and I kept the faith. We voted for Malcolm Turnbull in every ballot he’s ever been in.”

Both Pyne and Brandis were senior ministers in Abbott’s government. So much for their professions of loyalty.

Up to that point of his speech, Pyne was laying bare the bloody rift between the Liberals’ two main factions, now openly warring with each other rather than Labor.

Then he went further, supporting a prediction I made last year — that Turnbull would not want to be sacked as Prime Minister without first bringing in same-sex marriage.

For that, he must get Parliament to vote for it, since the Senate won’t let him keep his promise to voters and conservative Liberals to let the public vote instead.

Turnbull has never ruled out a vote of politicians, and Pyne, his chief spear-thrower, gave every reason at the Cherry Bar to believe Turnbull will indeed break his promise — especially now his poll numbers are terminal and time on his leadership running out.

“There’s still a couple of things we’ve got to do to be able to prove that winning positions is all very well,” Pyne said.

“Friends, we are in the winner’s circle but we have to deliver a couple of things and one of those we’ve got to deliver before too long is marriage equality in this country.”

The crowd cheered, and Pyne added: “We’re going to get it. I think it might even be sooner than everyone thinks.

“And your friends in Canberra are working on that outcome.”

Pyne will argue he was just expressing a hope, not revealing a plan, but almost no conservative MP will believe him.

Of course Turnbull wants Parliament to legalise same-sex marriage. His entire post-politics reputation now relies on it.

If he gets dumped as Prime Minister tomorrow his name would be mud to both sides of politics.

To Labor, he would be the sellout who wimped it on every conviction he had, from the republic to the same-sex marriage.

To Liberals, he would be the loser who stabbed a winning Prime Minister and then trashed the Liberals’ principles and reputation by leaving us with record debt, record spending, record power prices, and higher taxes. And how many Labor policies has he now aped?

But if Turnbull achieves same-sex marriage he could at least quit as a lion of the Left, hero of a thousand dinner parties.

And he and Pyne would have the last laugh. Let those loathed conservatives clear up the rubble of what was once called the Liberal Party.

The SSM policy aside, I found Pyne's comments on the state of the internal power struggle within the Liberal Party more interesting. He is gloating. The partial move to the centre will prove very successful in sorting out a lot of issues within and outside the LP

Australia’s official population clock has ticked over 24.5 million, putting us well on the way to reach 40 million by the middle of the century.

We reached the milestone at around lunchtime on Friday, assuming the clock is correct.......

The Australian Bureau of Statistics currently believes our population is increasing by one person every one minute and 22 seconds, meaning we add about 1000 people a day, 350,000 a year and just over a million every three years.

The clock struck 24 million in February last year and, if the ABS doesn’t change its estimate, it will reach 25 million in October 2018.

The numbers are based on a projection calculated using births and deaths data from the ABS, and migration figures from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection.

Interesting! ... another defection to the "Real" Australian Conservatives ... Bernardi is filling his tent with genuine conservatives, and they will steal more votes from the sinking Liberal ship ... citizens are sick of Malcolm Turnleft and his "ALP - Lite" policies ... and the ill conceived strategy will be the end of him, as it will NOT attract any votes from the socialists ... they hate him!

Victorian MP Rachel Carling-Jenkins set to defect to Australian Conservatives party

CORY Bernardi has reportedly scored another defection to his fledgling Australian Conservatives party, with a Victorian MP set to join.

The South Australian senator is expected to reveal on Monday the arrival of the Victorian upper house MP Dr Rachel Carling-Jenkins, according to Fairfax Media.

It comes just days after Senator Bernardi applied to register the party in Victoria ahead of state elections next year.

The Australian Conservatives has broken the 10,000 mark for memberships nationally, Fairfax reported. In contrast, it noted, the Victorian Liberal Party is thought to have about 13,000 members.

Dr Carling-Jenkins is currently a member of the Democratic Labor Party (DLP). Her decision will spell the end of national representation for the DLP, which already lost its only other federal representative John Madigan, who defected to set up his own John Madigan’s Manufacturing and Farming Party.

Fairfax reported that Senator Bernardi and Dr Carling-Jenkins were introduced by a mutual friend a few months ago.

Her defection is said to be motivated by a desire to see conservatives unite nationally and comes after South Australian upper house members Robert Brokenshire and Dennis Hood from the Family First party joined his new outfit in April.

Senator Bernardi formed his new party after leaving the Liberals in February, claiming he wanted to keep his former party accountable to its founding principles of lower taxes and lower government spending.

Sources told Fairfax more MP defections to the Australian Conservatives were likely, but they did not reveal the identities of those considering joining.

In reference to every post in the Trump thread ... "There may have been a tiny bit of license taken there" ... Ok, Thanks for the "heads up" PT!
