Love this picture from this week at the 75th anniversary of the Forgotten People speech. Abbott going 'Latham' on Turnbull, the little fossil with a look of dread of what is about to happen, and Brendon Nelson can't look. LOL

Also the poster behind Abbott with WHICH WAY...says everything about the confused state of the Liberal Party.

Brandis again, this after spending heaps of your moneyand mine on a series of "governmental" holidays visits (with wife in tow for some unaccountable reason) to Broome in the high season.

Attorney-General George Brandis shelled out almost $20,000 in one day jet-setting Australia’s east coast on private jets.

Travel itineraries obtained by the Daily Telegraph reveal Senator Brandis took four advisers on a 12 hour trip between NSW and Queensland in April 2014.

The trip included an $18,000 on a private jet trip to Ingham to inspect the flood damage from Cyclone Ita, before a trip to Sydney for an budget meeting.

However, Senator Brandis only spent 55 minutes on the ground in Ingham before jetting off to Sydney, via two military flights to and from Townsville.  Senator Brandis touched down in Sydney to join the tail end of a meeting on the Abbott government’s expenditure review.  He then remained in Sydney for several hours for a personal commitment that was ‘unrelated’ to work, his office admitted to the Telegraph.

In 2015, Bronwyn Bishop sparked furore by chartering a helicopter to take an 80-kilometre flight from Melbourne to a golf course near Geelong for a Liberal Party function

Good riddance

Former NSW MP Ian Macdonald sentenced to at least seven years behind bars

Disgraced former NSW minister Ian Macdonald has been sentenced to at least seven years behind bars.

Macdonald, 68, was convicted for signing over a valuable coal exploration licence to Doyles Creek Mining, a company chaired by ex-union boss John Maitland, when he was NSW resources minister in 2008. He was today sentenced to a maximum ten years.

Maitland, 71, who made $6 million selling shares in a company that acquired Doyles Creek Mining after the licence was granted, was found guilty of being an accessory to the misconduct.

He was today sentenced to at least four years behind bars.

In sentencing, Justice Christine Adamson said Macdonald "damaged the institutions of government and the public’s confidence in them".

Who else but a union would stand up to this? The govt doesn't seem interested in the health and wellbeing of workers and citizens

CFMEU considers bans over ‘asbestos threat’

Unions are threatening boycotts and industrial action after Australian Border Force officers revealed they had detected 40 cargo consignments containing asbestos in the past 10 months, a threefold increase on the last financial year.

ABF officials admitted there was a “continuing stream” of asbestos products coming into Australia, but said the higher number detected was because of a significant increase in testing and detection activity by authorities.

The Construction Forestry Mining and Energy Union yesterday hit out at a failure to prosecute a Chinese company caught in an asbestos scandal last year. Yuanda has been subject to a criminal investigation over importing asbestos-tainted building products from China. The company admitted last year that part of the contents of a shipping containers had returned a positive result; the ABF said its probe was continuing.

Dave Noonan, the national secretary of the CFMEU’s construction and general division, said building workers would consider stopping work if products suspected of containing asbestos were found on projects.

“Border Force can’t inspect every shipment which comes into the country and that’s why offenders should have the book thrown at them in order to send a message and change behaviour,” he said.

“If this soft-touch approach to prosecutions continues, we’ll have no choice but to consider banning certain building products from certain countries on health and safety grounds until the minister is willing to take decisive action.

“If the government put as much effort into stopping asbestos at our borders as they do into stopping refugees, Australian workers would not be put at risk from this deadly substance.”

He said the ABF had applied only three financial penalties for importing asbestos, and there had been no court-imposed fines or costs, and no revocations of licences.

Asbestos has been detected in building products and a number of car parts, including brake pads, clutches and gaskets.

At a Senate estimates hearing, ABF commissioner Roman Quaedvlieg said 602 tests had been conducted on cargo consignments in the 10 months to April 30, compared with 117 tests the previous financial year.

No second sitting as iftar dinner too hard for Turnbull to digest

Malcolm Turnbull will not have a second iftar dinner with Islamic leaders after he became the first Australian prime minister to host the Ramadan feast at Kirribilli House last year — an event that cost taxpayers $33,694.

The Australian was informed yesterday there would be no second iftar, with last year’s event being overshadowed by the attendance of Sheik Shady Alsuleiman, the national president of the Australian National Imams Council, given his past comments about homosexuals.

The Prime Minister was forced to condemn his comments, Sheik Alsuleiman having said AIDS was a “divine punishment” for homosexuals, and adulterers should be stoned to death.

The Islamic preacher — born in Sydney to an Arab-Palestinian family that migrated to Australia in the late 1960s — had also once called on God to “destroy the enemies of Islam”.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says households will be hundreds of dollars better off if the Coalition scraps the carbon tax.

Scrapping the carbon tax "means every household will be $550 a year better off", Mr Abbott said during last night's Rooty Hill people's forum.

The figure was also used at the Liberal Party's campaign launch on Sunday and appears in the Coalition's formal policy document.

August 2013

And he is still lecturing us.The man has no shame.

The UK election is going very badly for Turnbull.

Brits are rejecting faux centrists and going for the real thing. Same will happen here.

their was an iftar dinner doc - at punchbowl public school. dept of ed honcho mark scott attended.

Did he take a food taster? ... they always did hold one there, and welcomed all infidels - except for last year when they were trying to make it a Muslim Only school.

There are Iftar Dinners held all over the place (well maybe not in Brunswick Heads).

My observation was that Malcolm had ditched the tax payer funded one at Kirribilli House (having been the first PM to hold one last year ... Ooops!), and has adopted the proper description of Radical Islamic Terrorism, which is of course "Radical Islamic Terrorism ... sorry Waleed!
In reference to every post in the Trump thread ... "There may have been a tiny bit of license taken there" ... Ok, Thanks for the "heads up" PT!

Manus Island class action: government to compensate former detainees in huge settlement

Michael Koziol

Published: June 14 2017 - 11:11AM

The Australian government has agreed to compensate 1900 asylum seekers currently or formerly held at the Manus Island detention centre, in what may be Australia's largest ever human rights-related settlement.

The terms of the settlement are unknown but lawyers have suggested asylum seekers could be paid in excess of $150,000 each in compensation and exemplary damages, with the total bill nearing $300 million.

The Victorian Supreme Court this morning heard the parties had reached an in-principle agreement to settle the claim on behalf of 1905 current former detainees, though the settlement was not yet formally approved.

In settling the case, the government will avoid a long and potentially damaging trial, which was set to last about six months and reveal explosive claims about life at the Manus Island regional processing centre.

The trial was due to begin in May but was twice delayed, fuelling speculation the parties were headed for settlement.

The lead plaintiff, former Manus detainee Majid Karami Kamasaee, claimed on behalf of the group he had been mistreated by the Commonwealth and its contractors on Manus Island during 11 months of imprisonment there in 2013-14.

A further claim of false imprisonment was added to the class action last year.

Lawyers Slater and Gordon and Mr Kamasaee were due to hold a press conference late Wednesday morning.

Separate legal action in the Papua New Guinea Supreme Court, being run on behalf of current detainees in parallel to the Victorian case, is now in question. PNG lawyer Ben Lomai said he would await the instructions of his clients.

"If Slater and Gordon settle with the Commonwealth then it is likely that we will seriously consider withdrawing the proceedings in PNG," he told Fairfax Media earlier on Wednesday.

Mr Lomai suggested the settlement figure in Australia would likely mirror that being sought in PNG, which was about 500,000 PNG kina, or $200,000 each.

"I think it will be based on the PNG figure," he said. "The only difference might be the exemplary [damages], they might push the exemplary [damages] up."

More to come

This is a very interesting development.

Ministers to be hauled before Supreme Court after criticising terror sentencing

Josh Gordon, Benjamin Preiss

Published: June 14 2017 - 7:12PM

Three senior Turnbull government ministers will be hauled before the Supreme Court of Victoria to explain why they should not be charged with contempt after accusing the judiciary of advocating softer sentences for terrorists.

In an explosive development, the Supreme Court has ordered Health Minister Greg Hunt, Assistant Treasurer Michael Sukkar and Human Services Minister Alan Tudge to appear on Friday "to make any submissions as to why they should not be referred for prosecution for contempt" .

A letter from Judicial Registrar Ian Irving obtained by Fairfax Media says comments by the three ministers published in the The Australian accusing the judiciary of going soft on terrorists would appear to bring the court into disrepute.

"The attributed statements were published whilst the judgements of the Court of Appeal were reserved," the letter says.

"The attributed statements appear to intend to bring the Court into disrepute, to assert the judges have and will apply an ideologically based predisposition in deciding the case or cases and that the judges will not apply the law."

The extraordinary order follows comments published in The Australian in which the senior ministers blasted the Victorian judiciary for handing down lighter sentences for terrorists as part of "ideological experiments".

The judicial registrar has also written to The Australian's editor and the journalist Simon Benson asking them or their legal representatives to attend the court, alongside legal representatives for News Corp.

Mr Hunt reportedly said: "Comments by senior members of the Victorian courts endorsing and embracing shorter sentences for terrorism offences are deeply concerning – deeply concerning."

"The Andrews government should immediately reject such statements and sentiments."

"The state courts should not be places for ideological experiments in the face of global and local threats from Islamic extremism that has led to such tragic losses."

The comments were seen by the court as relating to an appeal by the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions challenging a 7½ year non-parole sentence imposed in 2016 on Sevdet Ramadan Besim.

The Court of Appeal is yet to deliver its judgements on the matter.

Besim pleaded guilty to planning a terrorist attack in 2015 to behead a police officer on Anzac Day.

The Court of Appeal last Friday also heard challenges by Commonwealth prosecutors to the sentences imposed last year on a teenager who built a bomb and planned to detonate it on Mother's Day the same year; and Hassan El Sabsabi, who sent $16,000 to a contact who planned to fight in Syria.

Besim, 20, was jailed for 10 years, but must serve 7½ years before he is eligible for parole.

The teenager – who has not been named – was jailed for seven years and must serve at least five; and El Sabsabi was spared further jail having served 44 days in custody when arrested in 2014.

Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions Sarah McNaughton, SC, said the intentions of both the teenager, known as MHK, and Besim were to terrorise and kill Australians on home soil.

The development will come as a further headache for Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, who also attacked Victoria's justice system in the wake of the Brighton terror attack.

Mr Sukkar was also quoted in The Australian claiming that the soft attitude of judges "has eroded any trust that remained in our legal system".

"Labor's continued appointment of hard-left activist judges has come back to bite Victorians," he is quoted as saying.

Criminal defence lawyer Rob Stary told ABC radio he had lodged a formal complaint to the Commonwealth prosecutors about the ministers' comments.

ABC Melbourne tweeted that Mr Stary said the ministers should resign or be stood down.

Mr Stary said the judiciary must be independent and "free from political interference".

Mr Stary said the comments constituted contempt of court.

He said attacking the court eroded public confidence in the administration of justice "from people who should know better".

He said it was permissible to comment on the inadequacy of a sentence but it must be done in a "proper way".

"It's not open slather," he said.

The three ministers' comments have appalled judges and magistrates.

On Tuesday, the Judicial Conference of Australia said the ministers' conduct was "grossly improper and unfair", representing a co-ordinated and direct attack on the independence of the courts and risked undermining public confidence in the judiciary.

Mr Hunt's spokesman declined to comment. Mr Sukkar and Mr Tudge have been contacted for comment.

Mal and his Cabinet mates (and there aren't many), must have temporarily forget Separation of Powers under the Westminster System when he sicked a few Victorian Liberal Party sycophants into the matter Judicial sentencing in Victoria.  A real Bjelke-Petersen moment for the Libs.

The doctrine of the separation of powers in Australia divides the institutions of government into three branches: legislative, executive and judicial. The legislature makes the laws; the executive put the laws into operation; and the judiciary interprets the laws. The doctrine of the separation of powers is often assumed to be one of the cornerstones of fair government.
