Under the Radar
Tara Madgwick - Sunday, 2 June 2013
The first season sires battle might be raging between Northern Meteor and Sebring, but it's not all about the big guns.

A winning double at Launceston on Sunday has highlighted the success of unheralded Tasmanian based sire Wordsmith, whose first crop of two year-olds are delivering the sort of statistics many commercial sires would kill for.

A Group III winning son of Testa Rossa (pictured), Wordsmith hit the mark with a pair of fillies on Sunday with success for Geegees Velvet and Geegees Hot Hussie, both youngsters bred and raced by Paul and Elizabeth Geard and trained by John Luttrell.

Geegees Velvet broke through for her first win after posting five consecutive seconds at her only previous starts which included a couple of Listed events, while Geegees Hot Hussie was winning her second race from just four starts.

Geegees Velvet and Geegees Hot Hussie are among five winners and two place-getters from 12 runners by Wordsmith and come from his first crop which numbers just 16 live foals.

Dairy farmers turned horse breeders, Paul and Elizabeth Geard have enjoyed much success with their thoroughbreds which all carry the Geegees prefix and include top class Tasmanian stayer Geegees Black Flash, a winner of the Group III Tasmanian Derby, Launceston Cup and Hobart Cup.

They stand Wordsmith at their Geegee Stud at a modest fee of $2,750 and his early success from very limited numbers will no doubt encourage more Tasmanian breeders to give the young stallion further opportunity.

Wordsmith makes his mark

06 / 06 / 2013 Wordsmith winning the Debonair at three. icon Click to enlarge

THE success of star galloper Geegees Blackflash has been the catalyst on which Paul and Elizabeth Geard have been able to build a thoroughbred breeding empire at their Broadmarsh property North-West of Hobart.

Geegees Blackflash first made his mark as a potential star when he won the 2010 Tasmanian Derby and after an injury-ridden four-year-old season he bounced back to win the 2012 Hobart Cup and this year he won the Launceston Cup to confirm his status as one of the best Tasmanian gallopers of all time.

The Clangalang gelding has won 15 and been placed 16 times from 45 starts and has accrued $814,000 in prizemoney, all of which has been won without having to leave the state.

But the Geards may have a new star in their midst in the form of well-bred stallion Wordsmith.

The Testa Rossa stallion had his first crop hit the race track this season and while he only served mares owned by the Geards he has made his way into Australia’s top 10 first- season sires list

Wordsmith has produced five individual winners for seven wins overall and they have accumulated prizemoney of $183,000 with Gee Gees Style providing about $63,000 of the booty.

Gee Gees Style was placed in multiple feature races before scoring a narrow his victory over star two-year-old Grand Tycoon in the $30,000 Autumn Classic.

Paul Geard said he bought Wordsmith with the intent of having a resident stallion oat his farm to service only his own mares but his progeny have performed so well the inquiry has been so great Wordsmith could serve up to 50 outside mares this coming season.

“I have been amazed by the amount of inquiry from local breeders and trainers seeking Wordsmith for their mares this coming season,” Geard said.

“The general opinion seems to be that he produces horses that can run early and the ones we have got to the races this season have all shown good ability,” he said.

Wordsmith (Testa Rossa-Way With Words x Yeats) won the $200,000 Group 2 Debonair over 1200 metres and he was placed third in the Group 3 Sandown Guineas in 2007.

He was forced to retire through injury so he was put through the rung at the Inglis Great Southern Bloodstock Sale but he was passed in.

“I originally had my eyes on Written Tycoon at the sale but Simon Vivien from Inglis said that unless I had $500,000 I should try and look elsewhere,” Geard said.

“He suggested I look at Wordsmith and I liked Testa Rossa as a racehorse and stallion so when he was passed in at $24,000 I put in an offer of $26,000 after the sale and it was accepted,” he said.

Wordsmith’s individual winners this season are Gee Gees Style (x 2) Geegees Hot Hussie (x 2), Geegees Velvet, Geegees Hawkeye and Geegees Red Rock.

Brighton trainer John Luttrell prepares all of Wordsmith’s juvenile winners except Geegees Red Rock that is trained at Spreyton by Leon Wells.

Luttrell believes the best Wordsmith two-year-old is Geegees Joker that is expected to make his debut in Hobart next month.

Indeed! I wish you as much luck as what Mandy has had with Mo! Mandy has three foals due this year to my Bloke and she is sending one or two over this season, so she has been a great supporter of Widden Valley!

Wordsmith goes to 50% winners to runners i believe with another winner today at Devonport. should cement his spot in the top ten and would more than likely have the highest strike rate of the top ten.

Malandrina booked last night to the boy. he has finished 4th by winners and the impressive part i think given Tassie prizemoney - 10th accross Oz for prizemoney. all of these mares were just from their general herd. no specific matchings etc. well worth the punt at $2750 i reckon.

Gee, she's a beautiful strong filly isn't she! Plenty of width about her and a great hind end. You're going to have a lot of fun with her. I know you won't but I have to say it anyway, if you ever think about selling or leasing, or sending her north, let us know. ;)

Dunno, looking at the horses in the Oaks Gee Gees Velvet  came  home second beating horses trained by Greg Eurell, Pat Carey, Dane Smith and David Hayes. in the Gold Sov one mainland horse was in trained by Mark Riley. suggests to me he is quite competitive.

Wordsmith takes out juvenile stallion title

01 / 09 / 2014 Wordsmith with G G Stud studmaster Stuart Gandy icon Click to enlarge

ONE of the state’s most promising stallions Wordsmith was announced as Tasmania’s leading sire of juveniles (2 & 3 year old) for last season.

Wordsmith, by Testa Rossa from the Yeates mare Way with Words, produced 17 winners during the 2013-14 season comprising seven two-year-old and 10 three-year-old wins.

Talented two-year-old Geegees Doublejay accounted for three of his sire’s winners and three-year-old filly Geegees velvet won twice as well as being placed in feature races.

Wordsmith stands at Paul and Elizabeth Geards Gee Gee Horse Stud at Broadmarsh where he will be standing his sixth season at stud in 2014.

His progeny won over distances ranging from 900 metres to 1400 metres.
