Here's the same story with the non-saintly tag.

But the mantle of sainthood never fell so lightly on the Waterhouses. The Waterhouses have been bête noirs to your correspondent’s for more years than he cares to remember. It all began with the Fine Cotton substitution scam in 1983.

Your correspondent was a reporter on The Australian Financial Review at the time and for some reason he made mention of the incident a few years later and it became a cause célèbre among he legal fraternity.

I am still unsure exactly what I said but it can’t have been very pertinent because in those days I thought horses were things you climbed on board, put your feet in the stirrups, picked up the reins, stuck your heels into the flanks and loudly called YEEHAA as you charged off into the sunset.

Wiki tells me today the scam involved a syndicate which purchased a horse that looked almost identical to Fine Cotton but performed better. Unfortunately for the syndicate, this horse was injured and unable to race when the ring-in was due to take place. Having already invested money and gone so far, the syndicate decided to find another horse. With time running out, they purchased a horse called Bold Personality, an open-class horse several grades above Fine Cotton.

The syndicate faced a problem in that the horses were different colours. Fine Cotton was an eight year old brown gelding and had white markings on his hind legs, whereas Bold Personality was a seven year old bay gelding with no markings.

To overcome this issue, they applied Clairol hair colouring to Bold Personality with limited success. On race day, having forgotten the peroxide to whiten the legs of Bold Personality, they resorted to crudely applied white paint. These poorly conceived attempts to overcome the discrepancies in appearance between the two horses later served to highlight the amateurish nature of the scheme.

Because most of the betting plunge on the race was on NSW racecourses, the Australian Jockey Club in Sydney held its own inquiry and warned-off bookmakers Bill and Robbie Waterhouse and seven others, including Catholic priest Edward O'Dwyer, for having prior knowledge of the ring-in.

Robbie Waterhouse has consistently denied he participated in the scheme or knew of the details. The Waterhouses had bet on Fine Cotton in amounts that suggest they knew Fine Cotton's chances were greater than his form suggested.

Whether this was due to a tip or knowledge of the scam has been the subject of considerable speculation. What is known is that the involvement of the Waterhouses infuriated other bookmakers who stood to lose as a result.

The warning-off later presented a problem for Robbie's wife Gai Waterhouse, daughter of training legend Tommy J. Smith, when she applied for a trainer's licence from the AJC. After much pressure by Gai on the AJC she gained her licence to train.

In 1998, after being banned for 14 years, Bill and Robbie Waterhouse were allowed back on to Australian racecourses. Since then, Robbie has had a number of controversial run-ins with racing stewards.

Fine Cotton died on February 20, 2009, aged 31. Gai and Robbie’s son Tom is now a bookmaker in his own right and Gai is Queen of the Turf in Sydney. Gai Waterhouse had never won a Caulfield Cup till now. Her Dad, Tommy Smith, won four Caulfield Cups, two Melbourne Cups – and an amazing seven WS Cox Plates: She must have been well bred.

Stephen Fry hosts a TV programme called QI...(means quite interesting)

An amazing story was told that would make  ESSENDON and Rugby players look like pussies.

TRUE STORY.

In the summer of 1937 Buckley was approached by a chemist called Menzies Sharp. He claimed he had a "secret remedy that would give the players confidence". It is believed that Sharp's ideas were based on the experiments of Serge Voronoff, a French doctor, who had been born in Russia. Between 1917 and 1926, Voronoff carried out over five hundred transplantations on sheep and goats, and also on a bull, grafting testicles from younger animals to older ones. Voronoff's observations indicated that the transplantations caused the older animals to regain the vigor of younger animals.

Sharp's "gland treatment" involved a course of twelve injections. Buckley later explained: "To be honest, I was rather sceptical about this treatment and thought it best to try it out on myself first. The treatment lasted three or four months. Long before it was over I felt so much benefit that I asked the players if they would be willing to undergo it and that is how the gland treatment became general at Molineux."

Two Wolves players, Dicky Dorsett and Don Bilton, refused to undergo the "gland treatment". According to Patrick A. Quirke, the author of The Major: The Life and Times of Frank Buckley (2007): "Dorsett, a well-established and experienced footballer, had stood up to Major Buckley's insistence (some might say bullying) on a number of occasions."

Don Bilton recalls that he was signed by Major Buckley from York City. On his arrival at the club he was instructed by Buckley to report to the medical room for gland injections. Bilton replied: "I'm sorry Sir, but I am only seventeen and still under my father's guidance. He will not want me to have injections." Buckley told him that he was under contract and had to do as he was told. Bilton's father went to see Buckley the following day and after a heated row the manager backed-down. However, Bilton claimed that: "Buckley was not at all pleased by this and I never did much good at Wolves after that!"

Rumours circulated that Wolves players were being injected with "gland extracts from animals". Tommy Lawton, who was a member of the Everton team that lost 7-0 to Wolves, believed that these injections were improving the performance of the players. He claimed that before the game he tried to speak to Stan Cullisbut "he walked past me with glazed eyes".

On 9th April, 1938, Dicky Dorsett and Dennis Westcott both scored four goals when Wolves beat Leicester City 10-1. After this defeat the club complained to Montague Lyons, the Leicester member of the House of Commons that the Wolves players were being injected with monkey glands. Lyons demanded that the government instigate an investigation into this treatment. When Walter Elliot, the Minister of Health, rejected this request, Emanuel Shinwell, the Labour MP, suggested that considering Wolves' impressive form, ministers of the Conservative government should be put on a course of these injections.

The Football League carried out an investigation into the "monkey gland" treatment. However, it refused to ban these injections but they did arrange for a circular to be posted in the dressing rooms of every club in England and Wales. This declared that players could take monkey glands but only on a voluntary basis

Reputation and legacy

In the 1990s, Voronoff's negative reputation was softened. In November 1991, one of the oldest peer-reviewed medical journals in the world, The Lancet, suggested that the file on Voronoff's work be reopened and in particular that "the Medical Research Council should fund further studies on monkey glands."[6] By 1994, there were calls for a qualified apology from the orthodox medical establishment for dismissing Voronoff's work.[20] In particular, since modern medicine has established that the Sertoli cells of the testes constitute a barrier to the immune system, rendering the testes an immunologically privileged site for the transplantation of foreign tissue, the thin slices of monkey testicles Voronoff implanted into the patient's testicles may in theory have survived to produce some benefit. There have recently been successful experiments reducing insulin requirements in diabetics by implanting into them pancreatic islet cells from pigs coated in Sertoli cells to insulate them from attack by the immune system. No immunosuppressive drugs were required.[25] In 1998, the sweeping popularity of Viagra brought forth references to Voronoff.[22][26] However, in 1999, some speculated that the AIDS virus discovered in the 1980s entered the human population through Voronoff's transfer of monkey parts into humans in the 1920s.[27]

By 2003, Voronoff's efforts in the 1920s reached trivia factoid status for newspapers.[28] However, as recently as 2005, Voronoff's work in the 1920s and 1930s was noted for setting the basis for the modern anti-aging strategy of replacing hormones—the internally secreted substances that decline with age—to regain the vitality and physical attributes associated with youth.[29] Such practices are currently advocated by alternative medicine organizations such as the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine.[30]

Panda pornography

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Panda pornography (or panda porn) refers generally to movies depicting mating pandas, intended to promote sexual arousal in captive giant pandas. Under zoo conditions, the animals have in general proven unenthusiastic about mating, placing their species in danger of extinction.[1]

[edit]History

The method was popularized following reports of an experiment performed by zoologists in Thailand, in which they showed several captive giant pandas at Chiang Mai Zoo a number of pornographic videos featuring other giant pandas.[2][3] Though the researchers behind the project state that they believe in a successful mating due to usage of pornographic movies for animals, such success so far has not been achieved outside of China,[4] where 31 cubs were born over a ten-month period following commencement of the experiment. Other methods, including the use ofViagra, to stimulate pandas have thus far been unsuccessful.[5]

So evolution preserves species that are "beneficial to the planet" ? A novel idea, but one that would have seen all of us vanish, imo, because I can't see how life on  Earth is a nett beneficiary of our presence, considering it is undergoing a mass extinction event right now comparable to those of the geologic past, and all caused by us. Tell me you were just joking. Wink

Always look on the bright side of life . . .

Details
Published on Saturday, 22 September 2012 00:00

With Danny Nikolic found guilty on two charges relating to threats made to Victorian racing's chief steward it came as pleasant surprise when we switched on the telly to see the John Tapp and David Van Dyke interview.

After one of his horses had a positive swab returned for 'elephant juice' Van Dyke's (previously known as Hayes) world was turned upside down and he was disqualified from training and eventually walked away from the game completely.

Falling into depression, getting stomach ulcers, seeing numerous councillors and living a life of drugs and alcohol he eventually tried to take his own life by gassing himself in his car. He survived this after a man walking his dog just happened to be passing an area where Van Dyke thought no one would find him.

Thus started a very long road to recovery and with the help of his friends Chris Waller and Tim Martin he got himself back into racing when he joined Waller's stable. He describes it as "unconditional love" from his mates who stood by him through the bad times, who accepted him and gave him positions.

"It's good to have friends that you can turn to in these situations and both of them really made a positive impact on my life and where I have got to now," VanDyke said.

Three years ago Van Dyke returned to racing and it was Hidden Gem (who was given to him by Terry Mullens) that won back to back Sydney races that kick started his career again. Bag of Nickels was another "stunning looking mare" who won at Rosehill and then a duel metro winner, Choice Words, came along.

His saviour and salvation has been Lamasery who's record is outstanding, winning over $400,000 so far, including a listed race win and a couple of Group 3's. Again it was a friend in Sam Mayer that stood by Van Dyke that originally bought the horse off Darley. Peter Snowden told Mayer that he was a nice horse that just needed time. Mayer purchased him and gave him to Van Dyke to train and fill in the gaps while they got a few other horses ready.

VanDyke said that his second preparation with him was when Lamasery worked out what he had to do and thus began his winning record.

In what was a very humble and honest interview with John Tapp, Van Dyke, who has been given a second chance, has put his demons behind him and is back doing what he does best. With good advice and assistance from those close to him he is back being a success.

It's never too late to make amends and get your life back on track without giving up, just ask Van Dyke.

Lets get into it hey?

Gambling is one of mankind’s oldest activities, as evidenced by writings and equipment found in tombs and other places. It was regulated, which as a rule meant severely curtailed, in the laws of ancient China and Rome as well as in the Jewish Talmud and by Islam and Buddhism, and in ancient Egypt inveterate gamblers could be sentenced to forced labour in the quarries. The origin of gambling is considered to be divinatory: by casting marked sticks and other objects and interpreting the outcome, man sought knowledge of the future and the intentions of the gods. From this it was a very short step to betting on the outcome of the throws. The Bible contains many references to the casting of lots to divide property. One well-known instance is the casting of lots by Roman guards (which in all likelihood meant that they threw knucklebones) for the garment of Jesus during the Crucifixion. This is mentioned in all four of the Gospels and has been used for centuries as a warning example by antigambling crusaders. However, in ancient times casting lots was not considered to be gambling in the modern sense but instead was connected with inevitable destiny, or fate. Anthropologists have also pointed to the fact that gambling is more prevalent in societies where there is a widespread belief in gods and spirits whose benevolence may be sought. The casting of lots, not infrequently dice, has been used in many cultures to dispense justice and point out criminals at trials—in Sweden as late as 1803. The Greek word for justice, dike, comes from a word that means “to throw,” in the sense of throwing dice.

European history is riddled with edicts, decrees, and encyclicals banning and condemning gambling, which indirectly testify to its popularity in all strata of society. Organized gambling on a larger scale and sanctioned by governments and other authorities in order to raise money began in the 15th century with lotteries—and centuries earlier in China with keno. With the advent of legal gambling houses in the 17th century, mathematicians began to take a serious interest in games with randomizing equipment (such as dice and cards), out of which grew the field of probability theory.

Apart from forerunners in ancient Rome and Greece, organized sanctioned sports betting dates back to the late 18th century. About that time there began a gradual, albeit irregular, shift in the official attitude toward gambling, from considering it a sin to considering it a vice and a human weakness and, finally, to seeing it as a mostly harmless and even entertaining activity. Additionally, the Internet has made many forms of gambling accessible on an unheard-of scale. By the beginning of the 21st century, approximately four out of five people in Western nations gambled at least occasionally. The swelling number of gamblers in the 20th century highlighted the personal and social problem of pathological gambling, in which individuals are unable to control or limit their gambling. During the 1980s and ’90s, pathological gambling was recognized by medical authorities in several countries as a cognitive disorder that afflicts slightly more than 1 percent of the population, and various treatment and therapy programs were developed to deal with the problem.

Now let me tell you part 2 of this wonderful story.

In my words,this time....

This is my recollection and fine tuned with the help of google....in the 1990's when David Hayes(now Vandyke) made his name big time at Kembla, they took off  many plunges, I followed the money and had some wonderful wins but you had to take the shorter odds and the odds were never fancy.

I recall the stables were STATE OF THE ART and they stuck out, gigantic to an outside running rail somewhere in the back straight?

The horses were owned by VIC HAYES, so I'm presuming he was David's father.
Vic was a breeder and he loved naming his horses with KARIOI or part thereof. The colours I got slightly wrong but this story reveals all and it is written by BERT LILLYE, the racing writer who part helped in saving Kembla Grange track from non existence.

As for the positive swab...elephant juice....who knows...maybe he was set up...because they were winning plenty.
