Socceroos started their 2022 WCup campaign with a 3-0 win over Kuwait.

Nice start which will get tougher as we go through thequalification phase.

After learning that they lost in a penalty shootout I was going to post that they should have had Kerr take every penalty but now I see that Kerr did a Baggio and kicked it a mile over the bar.

She was heavily marked throughout the game and when most opportunities looked like presenting themselves she seemed to alone forward.

How many times did the Norwegians hit the top of the crossbar?

Those missed PKs were ugly...

Kerr missed early on and it haunted her through the whole game.

What the Matildas have to do is destroy Jamacia as this group is likely to finish with Italy, Brazil and Australia on 6 points each and goal difference will be vital - and at present the Matildas goal difference is zero.

Both Italy and Brazil gorged themselves against the Jamaicans (Brazil 3-0  Italy 5-0)   That leaves the Italians with a 6 goal difference and Brazil with a 2 goal difference. If Brazil beats Italy (maybe) with a 1 goal difference than that magic number for the Matildas is 4.  If the Italians beat Brazil then they will remain undefeated and second place in the group is the best we can hope for.  Either way the Matildas need to thump Jamaica 3-0 or 4-0 or preferably 5-0 to progress with the more favorable draw.

Take a break.

Death ride them if you wish.   I support them.

The Brazilians are no slouches. but both Brazilian goals had nothing to do with too high a line being played by Australia.

That was an issue against Italy but the first Brazilian goal came from a Marta penalty that could have gone either way and the second saw five Australians behind the ball when the pass was made but they were undone by an excellent run, a fine cross and a great finish to head the ball into goal.

It the second half the Australian defenders did an excellent job not only of shutting Brazil down but also of controlling the tempo of the game from the back.  There was also a very clear improvement in the communication between the defenders and the keeper which had been a noted failing in the Italian game.   If you watched both games you couldn't possibly help but notice the improvement in the Australians.

They play an aggressive football and with that comes an element of risk.  They are very fit and strong, attributes that eclipsed the skill advantage of the Brazilians who clearly felt the pinch in the second half.

Go Matildas.

Give me a break.  How can anyone suggest they've solved their problems when they've given Brazil two goals start?????  That after leaking goals in their two warm up games.

Do the same in the next round and they're no hope whatsoever of advancing.

Experts are scathing Ouch

The Matildas were stunned 2-1 by Italy in their World Cup opener, and the post-morten has already begun.

Ante Milicic’s side copped it online after a 95th minute goal consigned their campaign to a nightmare start - and former players also got involved.

Former Matildas star and current Canberra United coach Heather Garriock let rip over the performance on Optus Sport’s post-game coverage.

“It’s disastrous,” Garriock said on Optus Sport.

“I’m so upset. More for the fact of the style in which we played the second half and we touched on it at the start of the game, this high line is absolutely ridiculous.

“If you think as a coach you can come in and change your philosophy, and change the style within five matches. We have just been crucified, not once but twice.

“And so many times they were offside and we could have been scored against more than that. And we’ve got a 15th ranked side, and we’re ranked 6th in the world and they’ve just beaten us.

“If we had a better side playing against us tonight it would have been more than five. I’m so disappointed, more disappointed in his subs as well.”

And her sentiments were echoed by plenty of others across the Aussie football landscape as social media erupted.

“We were absolutely atrocious,” tweeted Sydney Morning Herald journalist Vince Rugari.

“That performance deserves to be ripped apart. No composure at all. Can’t play a high line with no composure.”

“I’ve been watching the Matildas for a long time and that’s about as bad as it gets,” added The World Game’s Sebastian Hassett.

“All the basics were lacking (high line?!). Struggling to process how bad that 2nd half was. The response better be one for the books. We’ll find out what they’re made of very soon”

The fan reaction was equally as brutal.

The loss isn’t the end of the world for the Aussies, who are still in with a strong chance of progressing to the next phase of the tournament should they get past Brazil and Jamaica in their remaining two group games.

However, this performance leaves a sour taste in the mouth and has the Matildas needing to regroup quickly if they’re to salvage their campaign.

The Matildas will crash out of the WWC at the group stage. You ain't going anywhere with defenders straight out of clown school.Big smile

Incredible.Wacko You would think with his recent employment history you would pay him minimum wage and he would be glad to get it.

Zizou back. That's got to be smarter than Mourinho. He's going to find it a lot harder than last go around. I predict they will sack Zizou too after one season- got to blame someone- may as well be the manager- never the president.

Right move, go back to the winners not the losers, totally unfit to manage this club imo, now they have to shaft Ramos somehow.

Qatar Sports Investments is a money laundering front carioca, they wouldn't care.

Yes PT, and they may launder a bit our way too but then again it may be called speculative buying, Easter sales may reveal some of it.
