His horses haven't been winning as much for quite some time. Strike rate has been down. I reckon he knew.

Flying as of this weekend. Prior to that? His last 100 runners returned a winning percentage of 10%, way below his normal strike rate of around 16%.

5 winners in the last 10 days pretty sure that will bring his s/r right back where it sits. Weak argument, as usual. Carry on.

Nah, his winners will bring him up to around 10% for January, still well below his regular strike rate. You don't like being proven wrong do you. LOL

Warrnambool trainer Jarrod McLean has made the decision to join the powerhouse stable of Darren Weir.
McLean will take up the role of stable foreman for Weir's Warrnambool satellite stable from August 1 this year.

ps..

I'm surprised...i thought weiry would still be pissed off with JMac for forgetting to hide the tubing gear at his stable a few years back. Cost Weiry a Merc...

Darren Weir teams up with top owner-breeder team

Seven days after dominating the Magic Millions meeting and barely 10 weeks after winning the Melbourne Cup, leading trainer Darren Weir has forged a link with a couple who rate among the nation’s most successful breeder-owners.

Bob and Sandra Peters have dispatched two of their most talented gallopers to join Weir at his Ballarat and Warrnambool training bases for key autumn targets.

The sky is the limit for Perfect Reflection, a three-year-old filly who has raced five times and is unbeaten. Her most recent success was against older horses under weight-for-age conditions in the Group I Kingston Town Classic (1800m) at Ascot on a heavy track.

The daughter of More Than Ready remains untapped and will be given her opportunity to shine against the best three-year-olds — male and female and from both sides of the Tasman — in the $755,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 5.

WA Oaks, WA Derby and Perth Cup placegetter Real Love will be aimed at the $400,000 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on March 14.

She is expected to use a traditional lead-up race, the $120,000 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville on March 14, to have her ready for the assignment.

Weir has not trained for the Peters, but his record and his facilities made him the perfect candidate. “His record speaks for itself and he trains in a rural environment with access to the beach, which is similar to what we have at home,” Bob Peters said.

Grant Williams trains Perfect Reflection and Adam Durrant trains Real Love, but they have several three-year-olds getting ready for the classics in WA and cannot afford the time away.

“It’s a bit hard to send our trainers over with one horse because we have a good team of horses at home getting ready for our autumn carnival,” said Peters, who is former chairman of the WA Turf Club. “There are times when it is possible but now isn’t one of them.”

Perfect Reflection may only have two runs during her Victorian stay. Melbourne racegoers may have to wait until February 20 to get their first glimpse of her in the flesh.

The plan is to start Perfect Reflection in The Vanity, a Group III race for fillies over 1400m carrying $151,500 in prizemoney and providing an ideal plank to the Australian Guineas.

“She’s going to meet a hot field in the Guineas. Darren’s got the colt that won the Magic Millions Guineas (Mahuta) going to the race, and the top colt and filly from New Zealand are supposed to be coming over as well,” Peters said.

“Perfect Reflection is a little bit delicate and she might just have the two runs at this stage and go for a spell.”

Weir fronts up at Flemington tomorrow, taking another step in the comeback of Signoff. The shock first-up winner lines up with topweight of 60kg after apprentice Harry Coffey’s 1.5kg allowance in the $90,000 Piping Lane Handicap (2000m).

Signoff ran fourth in the 2014 Melbourne Cup but missed the spring carnival last year through injury. He came from the rear to win at his first start since April at Caulfield over 1700m on Boxing Day in the Lord Stakes.

Racing Victoria (RV) Stewards have advised that an investigation into the detection of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, Ibuprofen, in the post-race urine samples taken from Signoff, a horse trained by Mr Darren Weir, has concluded.

In the circumstances, as summarised below, Stewards have decided not to charge the trainer under the Rules of Racing.

Ibuprofen was detected in a post-race urine sample collected from Signoff on Saturday, 26 December 2015 following the Swettenham Stud Lord Stakes (1700m) at Caulfield Racecourse which he won.

In deciding not to charge the trainer, Stewards gave strong consideration to the fact that Mr Weir had proactively undertaken three elective tests via Racing Analytical Services Limited (RASL) on Signoff prior to running at Caulfield, which had each tested clear of Ibuprofen.

The fact that the horse produced three clear elective samples prior to racing at Caulfield and producing a sample in which Ibuprofen was detected highlights the unpredictable nature of the excretion of the Ibuprofen that Signoff had been administered in a previous rehabilitation regime.

The Stewards have made an application to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board (RAD) Board for the disqualification of the horse pursuant to AR 177 from the race on 26 December 2015. This application will be heard and determined by the RAD Board on a date to be fixed and the trainer and managing owner have been notified.

“After carefully investigating the circumstances of this matter we have applied to the RAD Board to have the horse disqualified from the relevant race, however the trainer will not be charged under the Rules of Racing,” Mr Bailey said.

“Ibuprofen is, and remains, a prohibited substance under the rules.  However, in this case, the trainer undertook three elective urine tests in good faith on Signoff prior to the horse racing on 26 December 2015.

“The prolonged use of this substance in racehorses is a complex issue because of its erratic and unpredictable clearance from their system.  We understand that Signoff is one of a small group of affected horses from different stables that have been subjected a particular rehabilitation regime.

“There is currently little information available on how Ibuprofen is processed by the horse’s body and we are continuing to attempt to better understand its behaviour in horses and why these prolonged and unpredictable clearances have occurred in this group of horses.”

In February 2016, RV confirmed it would not seek to amend the Australian Rules of Racing for horses affected by the issues relating to the detection of Ibuprofen and will continue to work with trainers in facilitating elective testing on the small group of affected horses.

Previous advice to trainers remains that RV considers that the only safe way for trainers to avoid contravening the prohibited substance offence rules with Ibuprofen is not to administer Ibuprofen to racehorses (at any time) or allow Ibuprofen in racing stables.

ENDS

Notes To Editors

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal inflammatory drug in the same family as phenylbutazone, flunixin and ketoprofen, all of which are prohibited substances under the International Agreement on Breeding, Racing and Wagering – of which Racing Australia is a signatory.

No Ibuprofen charges for Weir, McDonald

Racing Victoria stewards have confirmed they won’t charge trainers Darren Weir or Clinton McDonald after their horses returned Ibuprofen positives.

The Weir-trained Signoff tested positive after winning the Lord Stakes at Caulfield in December while the prohibited substance was found in McDonald’s Rib Eye after wins at Terang in December and Flemington in January.

The stewards have applied to the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board to have the horses disqualified from those races, but decided not to pursue charges against the two trainers.

Both horses were treated with the drug in their recovery from serious tendon injuries.

The fact each trainer had proactively undertaken elective tests - which were clear - prior to racing weighed heavily in their favour.

In the case of McDonald, it was noted Rib Eye also won at Bendigo between the wins at Terang and Flemington, while the trainer was also unaware of the result from the earlier test prior to the second positive.

“After carefully investigating the circumstances of this matter we have applied to the RAD Board to have the horse disqualified from the relevant race, however, the trainer will not be charged under the Rules of Racing,” RV’s chief steward Terry Bailey said.

“The prolonged use of this substance in racehorses is a complex issue because of its erratic and unpredictable clearance from their system.

I also agree that it's a fair decision. However, I have never heard of any other drug returning intermittent positive & negative results without further administrations. Not saying that's what they were doing, but it's a very odd situation.
