Meech to represent Australia in Morocco

Melbourne jockey Linda Meech is due to represent Australia in Morocco on Friday night in the seventh leg of the Mubarak Ladies World Championship.

Meech will compete against 10 riders from all over Europe and from Canada at the Anfa Racecourse in Casablanca.

The 35-year-old earned her call-up on the back of a brilliant season as she currently sits seventh on the jockeys’ list for Victorian winners with a tally of 75. She has ridden some 1240 winners in her career, which is highlighted by her 2015 Group 1 win on Plucky Belle in the Coolmore Classic.

“I cannot wait to ride in the Arabian race and be part of  the HH Sheikha Fatima Ladies World Championship (IFAHR) in Casablanca,” Meech said.

“I am eager to see and explore Morocco as it appears to be a very beautiful country.”

Meech travelled to Morocco on behalf of the HH Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Global Arabian Horse Flat Racing  Festival.

She deserves more opportunities in town. Used to get some rides off Moody but struggling to get a crack at it unfortunately.

If Michelle Payne has taught us anything, the only reason Meech doesn't get those opportunities is sexist male owners.

Star. As good as anyone. Back her with extreme confidence. Love how she puts them into the race early and isn't afraid to lead and dictate. When the money goes on Widdison/Morgan runner, double up!!

I like backing Linda.   Always gives them their best chance with her rides.
Another girl flying at the moment is Jamie Kah in Adelaide.

She can match it with the boys any day of the week.
She was highly rated by P.G Moody as one of the best jockeys in the country.
I have no reasons to not believe him.

Stats don't lie.

Agree.

IMO this season is not a large enough sample size to determine her standing though.

If you look at her career strike rate, it's 13%.

The likes of Bowman, McDonald, Pike & Oliver run at 17%.

Meech got to ride a lot of Moody's in the country in recent years. A comparable is possibly Rawiller with Weir. Both were/are dominant trainers. Rawiller's strike rate is 17%.

I have her a rung below the very top riders, but certainly wouldn't be jumping off a horse I liked if she was aboard.

Agree James. After a win and short head second from 2 rides on one I'm involved in she gets replaced by a male jockey. As she was still riding at the same meeting it made zero sense to me.

However when you own a share in a multi syndicated horse you just have to cop it.

Can only assume the trainer made the decision.

The failure of Victoria and NSW racing authorities to see eye-to-eye regarding jockeys who hold a licence to both ride and train in Victoria has taken another scalp.

Linda Meech is one of a handful of jockeys who has been permitted to start training racehorses in Victoria, but the second-best jockey in the state - with 84 winners, behind Dean Yendall (94) - is not permitted to ride in New South Wales due to their stance on dual licence holders.

That means Meech, who has the sixth-highest winner count of any jockey Australia-wide this season, will not be able to keep the ride on the Peter Morgan-trained Sircconi, who is bound for the Inglis Sires' (1400m) worth $1 million at Randwick on April 1.

Meech - who has ridden Sircconi in all three career starts including a groundbreaking win in the Group 2 VRC Sires' (1400m) at Flemington in March - said while it was disappointing not to be able to keep the ride, she had made her bed with the rule early doors.

"I knew it was a chance of happening when I took out my trainer's licence. It's a bit disappointing, but nothing you can do about it," Meech said.

"Not that I know of [the rule will change soon]. When one door closes, another one opens.

"I was lucky enough to pick up a ride on one of Lloyd Williams' horses [at Bendigo Saturday-week], so Sircconi helped me pick up something new, so you just work with what you've got.

"I can't go to Sydney, so I make the most of what I can get here in Victoria."

RVL could counter the stupidity with temporary suspension or disqualification... find some sort of loophole that allows them to keep riding and, come Monday, reinstate the training license.

Rat cunning is the only counter to institutional stupidity.
