Seems like the underperforming Fastnet Rock (in Europe) has come up trumps with an English Oaks winner.  At 50/1 it looks like she wasn't expected to win!

Maybe they can finally see that he's not a sire of two year olds.  He also sired the 4th placegetter Diamondsandrubies a 14/1 shot.  She had a torrid run so perhaps could of finished closer also.

I have a Galileo mare - city winer, raced in an Oaks. Family page is ok - wonder if Coolmore would be up for a foal share?

I could of.  I have trouble finding these threads!  But possibly it was one I started after a Starspangledbanner stakes winner over there.

Has any other Australian trainer apart from Smerdon and Kav trained a fastnet Rock progeny to win beyond 2000m?

Kav certainly has the knack with the breed (no need for the cobalt comments there is another thread for that).

Interesting female families for both those classic winners.  The first the Sister Sarah family grandam of Nearctic so that mare appears five times.  Then you have the Flaming Page through The Minstrel and Nijinsky and all the Natalma's also.

While Magicool isn't as obvious but he decends from the grandam of Le Filou.  Or a bit closer the Arc de Triomphe winner Detroit.  Interesting to see Danzig brings in the sire of the dam of Le Filou.  The rest of his pedigree is in Vaneuse a 3/4 sister in blood to Le Filou by his sire Vatellor from his grandam.  Right at the bottom of Danzig's pedigree you find Quick Arrow a daugher of Casterari.  I find that quite interesting as he isn't the easiest of sires to find in pedigree.

I don't mean to be a smart arse, but if Casterari is in Danzig's pedigree, he's more 'salt' than 'hen's teeth' when it comes to rarities.... or did you mean other than Danzig?

Kav certainly has the knack with the breed (no need for the cobalt comments there is another thread for that).
Was only 5-6 weeks ago I was chatting with a trainer about Fastnets and the difficulty, as a trainer, trying to convince owners to make the ultimate gear change. Basically suggested that Fastnet bulls can send you broke.

Not too many good ones go cheaply at the sales.

Id imagine most trainers would have difficulty with most colts if they costs a substantial amount convincing the owners they need to be 2 stone lighter. Even $150K and below as an owner you don't like the thought of them being gelded. Ahh the dream of an owner to get a Sebring, Snitzel or Pierro, while there's plum's are still there, their is hope, unfortunately the odds are stacked substantially against you.

I guess Lankan Rupee makes trainers job easier, Id imagine at the end of the day if trainer had there number 1 preferred option 10 out of 10 colts would be gelded, for 2 reasons: 1. it makes their job easier, and they are easier to train and manage, 2. a higher chance of the horse reaching its full potential with its mind on the job at hand.

At the end of the day the owner should follow the trainers advice if your paying them to do the job, don't handicap the trainer. If u don't agree with the trainer find someone who has philosophys closer to your own.

As good as Fastnet Rock is in Australia I think he is proving even better in Ireland.

What a wonderful stallion he is.

He's got some pretty slow ones over there also Djebel.  But three G1's in year must be a record for an Australian bred sire.

Interesting win though on their Champions day in the main race of the day over 2000m.  It was worth 770,000 pounds to the miles 623,000 pounds.  Next biggest prizemoney was the 1200m sprint worth 358,000 pounds then the Champion Fillies and Mares over 1 1/2 miles worth 327,000 pounds.  Finally the 2 mile race was only a G2 worth 195,000 pounds.

So even in the home of staying races the 2000m race is rated the highest and get won by a Fastnet Rock.  The big handicap on the day over a mile distance was won by an Exceed and Excel.

I had a feeling his 1 1/2m winners were rare as my search appears to have borne out Big smile
He can now add yesterday's NZ Derby to his stamina capable winners!

Sherwood Forest outstays them in NZ Derby

Sherwood Forest tore up the script of a two-horse race and powered to an upset victory in Saturday's Group 1 New Zealand Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie.

After dominant performances by Two Illicit in the G2 Waikato Guineas (2000m) and Dragon Leap in the G2 Avondale Guineas (2100m) leading into the NZ$1 million classic, all eyes were on that pair in what was billed as a possible match race.

The blue-blooded gelding and the X-factor filly took turns holding favouritism around the $2.50 mark during the week, with no other runner in single figures.

Lurking at $13 was Sherwood Forest. A placegetter in the G1 New Zealand 2000 Guineas (1600m) in the spring, his trainer Tony Pike had the utmost confidence in the son of Fastnet Rock's stamina. Over a truly run 2400 metres, Pike believed he had the horse to outstay most of the Derby field.

Pike was exactly right. In the fastest New Zealand Derby since So Casual clocked 2:24.8 in 1998, it was Sherwood Forest who stood strongest of all.

Ridden by star Melbourne-based Kiwi jockey Michael Walker, Sherwood Forest settled in fourth place as Peloton, Red Rufus and Vladivostok set up a strong tempo out in front.

The intensity went up a notch coming down the side of the track as Vinnie Colgan made his move on Two Illicit, with Jason Waddell following him every step of the way on Dragon Leap.

That pair strode to the front together at the top of the straight, and the predicted two-horse war looked like it was about to unfold.

But Sherwood Forest was in between that pair, and over the last 300 metres he found something that they were unable to match.

Two Illicit gave her all to try to stay alongside him, but Sherwood Forest edged clear and crossed the finish line a length-and-a-quarter ahead, stopping the clock at 2:26.77.

Scorpz charged home from fifth-last to edge out Dragon Leap for third, finishing two lengths adrift of Two Illicit.

It was a third Derby win for Walker, following Military Move in 2010 and Puccini in 2014, and a second for Pike after Rangipo in 2016.

"He just outstayed them," Pike said. "The last few races he's been running in have been a little bit too sharp for him, but I've always thought he would come into his own over 2400 metres. It's a fantastic result and hugely satisfying.

"He was a bit of a ratbag as a two-year-old, but the team have put in a lot of work with him, and this season was always going to be about the Derby. It's great when a plan comes off.

"It was a beautiful ride. We wanted it to be a true staying test. He presented him at the right time, and the horse showed what a genuine stayer he is."

Pike said a decision had yet to be made on the remainder of Sherwood Forest's season, but a shot at the G1 Australian Derby (2400m) on April 4 was now likely.

Saturday's win continued a remarkable month for Walker, whose horror recent history of injuries had threatened to end his riding career.

Instead he is back doing what he does best, having also won last Saturday's G1 Blue Diamond (1200m) at Caulfield on the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young-trained Tagaloa.

"Five weeks ago I was going to give it away," Walker said. "I was too heavy and getting sick of all the injuries. I've had 13 operations on my left hip, including a hip replacement.

"But I decided to stick with it, and I've been very fortunate to have these results. I'm really grateful for the opportunity to come home and ride this horse. He gave me an amazing ride. He's such a gentleman, and everything I asked for, he gave.

"The two favourites have such brilliance, but if there was a chink in their armour, it was going to be the distance. You have to be the best staying horse to win this race, and Tony gave me confidence that I was riding that horse.

"When he got away from them in the straight, he actually pulled himself up a little bit. I might not go so soon on him, if I get the opportunity to ride him again.

"I have to rush off and catch a plane back now, so I can't stick around for the celebrations. But seeing the connections' smiling faces when I came back off the track was an awesome thrill. It's why I keep doing this."

Wisdom has been chasing me but I've always outrun it!
