Morphettville-based trainers Niki O'Shea and Ashton Downing have been disqualified for five and two years respectively, after being found guilty of multiple offences relating to raceday treatment.

O'Shea and Downing attempted raceday administration to two horses, Social Set and Allez Tara while on route to Strathalbyn, on Wednesday May 2, 2018.

The two were caught by surveillance from the TRSA stewards and both horses were scratched on race day.

O'Shea had eight charges laid against him and was disqualified for five years, while Downing had six charges laid against her and has been outed for two years.

The most serious charge laid is under AR 175(aa) - conduct intended to corrupt the outcome of a race.

The disqualification will start as of Thursday July 26, 2018 and the pair cannot start a horse in any race until the end of their disqualification.

TRSA CEO Jim Watters has backed the severity of the penalties in a media release from the TRSA Stewards.

"The maintaining of the highest possible levels of integrity and horse welfare are the absolute cornerstone of the racing industry," said Watters.

"While the penalties are severe, these were premeditated actions to try and illegally affect the outcome of a race, and in ensuring a level playing field for all of our participants, and in endeavouring to maintain the expected levels of animal welfare, the penalties must be substantial. Both O'Shea and Downing have the right to appeal the Stewards' finding and penalties and it is not appropriate to comment further at this point."

Racing.com has contacted O'Shea but he is yet to reply at time of publication.

Is that the slightest smell of a fresh breeze entering into the dusky room of racing?

Don’t get too excited... if they haven’t charged Dwyer from his indiscretion then not much has changed I’d guess

Every chance they will come back negative as they were allegedly caught "attempting",
hindsight a funny thing, maybe should have waited till they finished , hope this doesn't slow or diminish the sentences, long may this continue , been going on for far too long.

This stay of proceedings rule which allows them to continue to train and race horses is an absolute joke.

It's an insult to clean trainers, punters and it's just a shocking look overall.

It’s beyond a joke - I’m sure people given a long time on the sidelines are not gearing and punting to save up some money for their holiday
