I think, though, it wrong that people might be called to give an account of what may have been said in confession decades ago, that would violate the very clear understanding that existed, that it never be disclosed. But I don't like such things as retrospective laws, which seem to me, unacceptable.

The seal of the confessional should be kept that way.

Time to drag this one out of 20-odd pages back (remember when it was the hot topic to have an opinion about?)
Tomorrow it's decided whether Pell will have to stand trial. It's looking unlikely. Either way it's going to be the hot topic again on media and in living rooms and bars around Australia tomorrow or the next day, and for about another 2 weeks after that. People will all start pretending to have an interest again because, well, it's important and stuff. Sarcasm aside, it probably IS A pretty important moment in Australian history, all things considered. |

(Maybe the promise of using the excess money raised by crowdfunding to send victims of abuse to Rome to build a "healing centre" in Ballarat will be remembered, if the money still exists and the good will is still there to make it happen? That would be a good outcome.)

Dunno whether he'll be committed, or not as you suggest.
What leads you to the latter scenario Stayer? |

Cardinal George Pell to stand trial on historical sexual offence chargesBy court reporter Emma Younger Updated 3 minutes ago Cardinal George Pell has been committed to stand trial on multiple historical sexual offence charges, but the most serious charges have been thrown out. Magistrate Belinda Wallington is part way through her ruling on whether there is enough evidence to send Cardinal Pell to trial. She has committed Cardinal Pell to stand trial on some charges, but she has discharged others. Cardinal Pell was escorted into the Melbourne Magistrates' Court under police guard. He has strenuously denied the accusations. Today's ruling follows a month-long committal hearing in March. The first 10 days of the hearing were closed to the public and media as the complainants gave their evidence, which is standard practice in cases involving sexual offence charges. Their evidence remains confidential.more....... http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-01/cardinal-george-pell-court-decision/9713630 |

Seems like a fair process being followed. Most charges including, some early reports say, the "most serious ones" have been dismissed and the magistrate thinks that a jury should decide on the credibility of witnesses/ statements that can't be totally discredited or practically impossible. I wonder which allegations are still being considered possible?
Worth remembering that these allegations are about Pell personally sexually abusing minors. Not about whether he's arrogant, powerful, has covered up things others did, or belongs to a religion that a lot of people don't like. Of course that small fact is being lost among the jeering crowd. How on earth do they get together an impartial jury??? How does that process work in Oz? I've seen too many hollywood movies about jury selection. |

Actually just read that article above - so it's the swimming pool and cathedral allegations that still stand, if that article is right. Fair enough. Well done, magistrate.

You make a fair point Stayer. I would classify myself one of the “ jeering crowd “. However I don’t want to see him incarcerated for alledged acts that can not be proven in an effort to simply bag a high profile member of the church. Being guilty of arrogance, holding high office and being a member of a widely disliked organisation are not grounds of depriving someone of their liberty. That said I have no doubt that a desire to protect the church and therein be party to cover ups is something he is 100% guilty of. Based on the crimes that took place jail time should be served

From what I have been told by someone who personally knows a "higher" profile convicted "offender", that has been the precise MO - the bigger the fish, the lower the standard of proof AND the higher the penalty for less significant indiscretions. That individual is serving 7 years, for a "crime" that happened more than 40 years ago that he pleaded guilty to without contest, that would normally earn a suspended sentence if he were just a civilian ... As for Pell, his crime is his lack of action when he knew what was going on - other than to protect serial offenders - he needs to fry for that alone.

I know nobody will agree and I don't blame them, but I honestly believe that he knew much less about all the crimes than you might expect. And I don't believe for a second that he did anything malicious himself. MAYBE as a young priest but I doubt it.
What saddens me and many other clued-in catholics about him being scapegoated and villainised is that I know for a fact how rife homosexuality has been in australian (and english, and probably everywhere else) seminaries since the 70s, and how a lot of senior clerics groomed young seminarians and even promoted them and protected them if they joined the "club." That's not big news to anyone who has known enough ex-seminarians and current priests. In fact those who resisted and protested were often ostracisized and railroaded. Sick but true. And it goes all the way up to the vatican "lavendar mafia" who have huge power, and who wore down the last pope, benedict, until he resigned in despair. (As did the corrupt money laundering types.) That's not nutter conspiracy theory stuff, it's all true. Ironically, the bad element in the vatican is rejoicing in Pell being stopped from doing his job of uncovering corruption. He was doing it well and things were about to get explosive. Somebody in mainstream media should have the balls to tackle these serious issues. It's been my hope from the start of the Pell circus that he might have the guts to raise these issues himself, but he's only made a few allusions so far. |

Catholic Schools To Deal With All The Pedos Once They Get Rid Of The Gay StudentsAustralia’s Catholic church has today revealed they will deal with the whole deeply entrenched culture of protecting child abusers, once they fire teachers, nurses and students who are gay. This comes after the LGBTI community vocalise their fears that the government may bolster laws permitting religious schools to discriminate against gay students and teachers as a result of the Ruddock review of religious freedoms. Betoota’s local priest Father Ricepell has also spoke out, explicitly warned the church’s 180,000 employees they were expected to uphold its teachings “totally”, and defiance of their weird rules about gay people would result in sackings, or expulsion. “Look, we understand the Royal Commission’s findings were concerning – but we have more pressing matters to deal with – the 20% of our clergymen who have been involved in child abuse will have to wait,” he said. “The fact that we might have employees that want to enter a consenting same-sex relationship is the number one issue right now.” “The rock spiders will have to be dealt with later” “Like all other employers, the Catholic Church should be able to ensure its values are upheld by those who choose to work for the organisation.” The Anglican Church, while declining to comment directly on employees, also emphasised the importance of protecting religious freedom and warned safeguards had “quickly unravelled” overseas while we were all so busy talking about kids getting abused in religious institutions. Scott Morrison has reportedly told everyone to chill out dude, and that religious schools are cool. |

This is particularly funny, since the FAKE NEWS media completely misrepresented the rporting on this during the week, and then Penny Wong (the token Lesbian of convenience) came out and pretended that this was something new, when it is actually an ALP law, that Penny voted for!
They really are fcuked up liars these "regressive" leftards!

At long, long last the case of the murder of Maria James has been reopened.
I only post it here because of how testy folks can be about opening new threads on the same subject matter. Pedo priest, a murdered single mother, a sexually abused autistic boy, a 38 year cover up ... it belongs here.
