Jockey Brett Poulus Suspended For 8 Months [20/04/2009]
Racing NSW Stewards today inquired into the analyst's finding of the presence of a banned substance under AR81B in the urine sample provided by licensed jockey Brett Poulus after riding in official trials at Rosehill Gardens on 17th March 2009.
Evidence was taken from Brett Poulus, Mr John Keladjian of the Australian Racing Forensic Laboratory and Dr Caron Jander, ARB Medical Officer.
Brett Poulus pleaded guilty to a charge under AR81A1(a) of having provided a urine sample which upon analysis was found to contain a banned substance.
His jockey's licence was suspended for a period of 8 months to commence on 17th April 2009 and to expire on 17th December 2009 (backdated until the day he was stood down).
The penalty of 8 months was subject to the following provisions:-
1. That a reduction of the penalty in the order of 2 months under the powers of AR81D be made available should jockey Poulus undergo and satisfactorily complete a period of professional counselling allowing him to resume riding on 17th October 2009.
2. That the final 2 months of the penalty be served as a suspension of his licence to ride in races, which allows him to resume trackwork riding on 17th August 2009 should he satisfactorily complete counselling, or on 17th October 2009 if he does not.
Brett Poulus was advised that he must produce a clear sample prior to resuming trackwork riding.
He's only just come back, and already he is suspended.
