Smash pick-up rates higher than Tosen
DARREN Weir’s powerful team has been strengthened by the acquisition of Japanese galloper Brave Smash.

Brave Smash was recently bought from Japan by Australian Bloodstock, which also races Tosen Stardom.

Australian Bloodstock’s Jamie Lovett said Brave Smash was rated higher in Japan than Tosen Stardom.

Brave Smash won two of 13 starts in Japan with his best victory over 1600m in a listed race in Tokyo as a two-year-old.

He contested the Japanese Derby last year and finished last, but he was also placed in a stakes race three starts ago over 1600m at Nakayama.

Lovett said it was Brave Smash’s last-start fourth in a Group 3 sprint over 1200m at Nakayama that excited him.

Brave Smash hit the front with 200m but was grabbed close to the line and he finished less than a half a length from the winner in a time of 1min 8.41sec.

“They ran a very fast time. We think he could be a sprinter and even a race such as The Everest could be an option for him,” Lovett said.

Lovett said an Everest slot holder had contacted them about starting Brave Smash in the race.

“We are confident he’s going to be a proper horse. He’s got the right profile and he’s in the right stable.”

Lovett said Brave Smash spent an extra week in quarantine and had arrived a bit fat.

He has been sent to Weir’s Warrnambool base.

Lovett said Tosen Stardom had returned to work and he was being set for the Memsie Stakes first-up at Caulfield on August 26.

If I am not mistaken, Tokai Teio is the horse that nutted Naturalism for the Japan Cup of whatever year it was ?

I wonder if that would be the case if it was back to its original distance of 1800 , 1400 now, what was that about the " staying " something in the VATC blurb!

I hope they didn't purchase it purely based on the times it has run. Horses running 1:08.5 in Janan would be much closer to 1:11 over here

Drums are beating. If he's going as well as has been reported, he'll be mighty hard to beat. He'll need to be good to beat Vega Magic. Did you see him fly against Heatherly?

Hope he goes good.  His last of 18 in the Japan Derby was certainly an eye opener.

Has been ready to go for a couple of weeks but waiting for the "right race" from radio reports. With only 54kgs we'll see what he's made of as far as sprinting goes on Sat because he's up against a few handy ones and a top grader around Caulfield. Don't see breakneck speed in this which may not help his cause.

Yeah get him in a fast run 1200m at Randwick where he has time to wind up and he could give the Grey Ghost a run for his money.

Not saying he would win it, but if I am a slot owner I could do worse!

Wouldn't get in the field if I was marketing the race. Has no hope at all on today's effort.

When he faces decent opposition he will be left in their wake.

I started with nothing and still have most of it left

I thought the first up run was flattering when he sat back and then hugged the rails home.

Looked flat today when ridden closer, and won't be able to give away a massive lead in The Everest against much faster horses.

Listed 1600m winner in Japan as a 2 yo, and looks like a miler to me ... surely the Randwick mile of the Epsom would be ideal ...?
In reference to every post in the Trump thread ... "There may have been a tiny bit of license taken there" ... Ok, Thanks for the "heads up" PT!

Next run will be in the Everest

Owners are in negotiation with the hope of buying a slot off one of the slot holders so they can be assured he will get a run

I would give him a hope of running a big race, why not have a crack.  There's not going to be any champions in this field. Chaut at his best maybe...His TJ win was visually impressive but he only beat the same horses he beat the year before.  The race is there for the taking.
