Hi Guys,

Anyone here interested in a greyhound syndicate? I've found a nice young dog with some staying blood in him, beautiful big boy, around 34kg. He has been broken in, and has done well, improving with every trial. Plan is to race the dog in Brisbane and hopefully in time he will run 600m, there is no depth to the 600m races in Brisbane, if you can get one that runs the trip you will pick up prize money.

He isn't expensive, we can get him and first month training fees for $2,000 (split between how many want in, prob cap at 5, so $400 each). On going costs if we have 5 guys would be $60 each per month (bit cheaper then a horse haha).

This will be my third syndicate, I run two others, both biught very cheap and having fun with both. First one paid for with his first win plus what we got out of the punt, second one only had 3 starts for 2 unlucky runs and a 4th last start, will be very hard to beat tomorrow.

I have a trainer who only has about 6 dogs max at any time and dogs are treated very well, kennels are squeaky clean and the dogs get the best of everything, I visit my two regularly and talk to trainer most days.

So if anyone has thought about getting into a dog or can't afford a horse this could be for you. If we do it we will have to move pretty fast, will get dog checked etc and go from there. Just inbox me if keen and can answer any other questions. You need to get registered with Racing Qld to become a owner etc, which is straightforward. If someone wants more then 1 share you can do that, we will do them in 20% lots.

Won't get rich of it, but is good fun.

Cheers!

If it'd have been in Victoria i at least would give it serious thought.

What are the average month to month costs, from right after the initial purchase, to their pre-training, their spelling, when they are racing etc?

Hey mate, I've only ever bought raced dogs so haven't had to worry about breaking in etc. My trainer charges $300 a month, they don't really spell as such, you can give them a freshen up, only time they wouldn't be racing is due to injury. Great time to be a buyer, prices are very low for pups or raced dogs.

You mentioned $60 per month 5 way, so in general does it cost approx $300 per month any time except when the greyhound is recovering from injury?  Just trying to get a rough idea is all.

Is there much variance between the top echelon of trainers and just a run of the mill one?

I believe some trainers will charge upto $400 a month and then will slug you for trials and tolls etc. Have heard of big trainers slugging owners of 6 dogs for road tolls when going to track, even though they only pay toll once haha. They will also charge you for dogs being checked etc which should be done once a week at least.

My trainer gets all dogs checked at least once, sometimes twice a week. The $300 he charges me covers everything. If you have a decent dog some trainers will do a 50/50 deal with no monthly fees. I like to pay the monthly charge though, helps the trainer out a lot.

Thanks for that. Not too bad actually. I would be interested but not the right time currently. Let me know if you do any others in the future though.

It's a home bred, but I've gone cold on it, just with my enquiries I don't think it will get much further then 400m.

One of my other syndicate dogs broke his maiden other day at his 5th start for us. Won very easily and hopefully first of many. Only paid $1,000 for him and was $1,000 to the winner, my trainer has done a great job with him.

I'm going to keep looking for the next purchase so I'll keep this thread posted.

I know your in QLD, but i know TBV has gone into a horse before with Zadon, i wonder if there is any interest from memebers to go into a couple of greyhounds?

Unfortunately i would only do it with dogs racing in VIC, and only after decent due diligence, i've just heard too many bad stories about the industry, specifically two of my fathers friends who have been involved in multiple dogs with multiple trainers in the past, telling me and dad to stay right away from the industry.

Like all codes, there will be bad apples. I know my trainer well and know the dogs are well looked after and I'm very hands on with him planning races etc. Like anything, do your research and hopefully you will find a decent trainer etc
