Look fear is a tool which has been used by our parties here in Australia also.  When we were asked to hand in our guns after Port Douglas we didn't have the big representation to object to it.  You were allowed to keep you guns (or certain types) if you secured them and had them registered etc.  I'm sure they have to hand over identification to buy guns in USA also.  But why do they need the automatics which were immediately placed on the banned list here.  How can police with side arms combat that!  Maybe if they could just get those off the streets it would be a start.  Aren't they in a different class of weapon etc.  So laws could get them off the streets but not worry about the little old ladies and their gun in the purse etc.  I don't know or understand it but better some than none.

If an Australian told you that they kept their cache of weapons because they feared a government tyranny you would think they were nuts.LOL

Although if Dutton ever becomes PM I might start stockpiling too.Confused

Come on Tiger, of course the great orator, Obama, never had anything as horrid as gun violence during his reign. That’s why he did nothing about it

There were 37 firearms incidents classified by the FBI/ATF as mass shootings during Obama’s 2 terms in office. He was as worthless on the gun issues as he was on everything else.

I dont care who is President, They will never get rid of their guns, so dont keep trying to make it a political thing PT.  It wont matter who, or which side,  sits in the White House, guns are there to stay, and the first candidate to put up their hand and say  "vote me in and I will get rid of guns " will vanish into the great black hole.  Dont blame Trump for this one !  Its been going on for years and it wont change now, no matter who gets in.
Its crazy that people can have access to high powered weapons.  No one needs them, unless they are nutters looking to shoot everything that moves.

animals before people.

It has been illegal in the states to sell or own automatic firearms in the states for decades. I don't ever recall them to be legal. The weapons used in the OH and and TX shootings were military style semi-automatic rifles and were apparently legally purchased. Police in the states carry comparable firearms.

The tyrannical government argument is laughable anyway. Yeh, you’re AK47s are going to stop the biggest military in the world from oppressing you if they decide to. Good one!

No. Loved children who grow up respecting humanity and all species in general, do not become bad for no reason.

Loved children do not become bad, unless that have a neurological disease, be it an undetected tumor, etc.
There was a case about a decent man, who suddenly became a rapist and pedo, and they had no idea why, then they found out he had a tumor.

What people need to do is cut the religious garbage term of "evil".
"oh, he is born evil, or simply just become evil".
Its a typical medieval response and that approach has never ever solved anything.
Its not Genetic.
Its called Epigenetics.
Environment, and or a neurological disorder.

The issue requires science, not religion.

Under this new federal ban supported by the NRA and signed into law by President Trump, the government isn't allowing existing owners to keep their bump stocks. They must be destroyed or turned over to authorities. And the government isn't offering any compensation for the devices, which can cost hundreds of dollars. Violators can face up to 10 years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. Bump stocks were approved originally by the Obama administration in 2010.

I think every American should openly carry a gun. They should at least try it.

A comes in and starts shooting.

B shoots A dead and is a possible hero except.....

C sees B shooting somebody so C shoots B.........

Eventually it will stop.

"The Obama administration approved the sale of bump fire stocks on at least two occasions."

National Rifle Association on Thursday, October 5th, 2017 in a press release

Obama administration’s role

Experts in firearm policy were divided when we asked about the fairness of the NRA’s characterization.

Adam Winkler, a law professor at University of California, Los Angeles, who specializes in guns, said it was appropriate to characterize the move as an approval of its sale under the Obama administration.

"Not because they liked it, but because the law did not permit them to prohibit it," Winkler said.

Other legal experts stressed that it wasn’t an approval, but rather a determination that current law didn’t allow for its regulation.

"The statement implies Obama or (U.S. Attorney General Eric) Holder was somehow involved, and that it was an issue that wouldn’t have been approved in any other administration, and that’s technically incorrect," said Rick Vasquez, a former Firearms Technology Branch official who first signed off on the recommendation the ATF could not regulate the Slide Fire.

But credit where it is due. Trump promised to ban bump stocks and he has delivered.

And then there is this.

Trump Signs Bill Revoking Obama-Era Gun Checks for People With Mental Illnesses

By Ali Vitali

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.

The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.

Related: Assault Weapons Not Protected by Second Amendment, Federal Appeals Court Rules

The original rule was hotly contested by gun rights advocates who said it infringed on Americans’ Second Amendment rights. Gun control advocates, however, praised the rule for curbing the availability of firearms to those who may not use them with the right intentions.

Both the House and Senate last week passed the new bill, H.J. Res 40, revoking the Obama-era regulation.

Trump signed the bill into law without a photo op or fanfare. The president welcomed cameras into the oval office Tuesday for the signing of other executive orders and bills. News that the president signed the bill was tucked at the bottom of a White House email alerting press to other legislation signed by the president.

The National Rifle Association “applauded” Trump’s action. Chris Cox, NRA-ILA executive director, said the move “marks a new era for law-abiding gun owners, as we now have a president who respects and supports our arms.”

Everytown For Gun Safety President John Feinblatt said he expected more gun control rollbacks from the Trump administration. In a statement to NBC News, he called the action "just the first item on the gun lobby’s wish list" and accused the National Rifle Association of "pushing more guns, for more people, in more places."

Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., a leading gun control advocate in Congress, called out Republicans over the move.

"Republicans always say we don’t need new gun laws, we just need to enforce the laws already on the books. But the bill signed into law today undermines enforcement of existing laws that Congress passed to make sure the background check system had complete information," he said in an emailed statement.

This is why Trump is correct about one thing, its an issue of mental illness.
75,000 on the article PT, with mental illness, shouldnt get a gun?
I reckon the list, if it was serious, would be more near 10 to 20 million people in the data base, shouldnt get a gun.

It is easy to see that you and Tizzy are afflicted with both TDS and a hideously high level of self-righteousness that drives your imagination but it would be nice if for once you report facts not assumptions. AA is right. Banning guns is never going to happen in the states. It is just reality. Your petty slurs don't change anything.

Like with everything else that both of you post, you appear to think that by limiting the rights of law abiding citizens you can solve all societal issues. If it is not gun control, it's wealth distribution, freebies for all, or dissolving our electoral system. It is all wrong according to you. If anyone disagrees, they are racist, bigots, deplorables, and idiots. As tragic as these shootings are, the reality is that the 2nd Amendment, like our electoral system and other constitutional freedoms is not ever going to be repealed and no trashing of yanks by you is going to change that.

You claim to be such experts on the states but obviously that is not the case, but you just keep on pushing your disparaging message like you do in your relentlessly mindless Trump Presidency thread that looks to continue endlessly with Trump retiring to FL in 2024.

Maybe I am missing something, but when did OZ become the utopian society that drives this self-absorbed self-righteous thinking? Are you keeping it a secret from the rest world?

Ban big guns.   If folks want a hand gun, fine.   No one needs a rapid fire , multi fire, high calibre, gun.
Unless they intend going to Afghanistan or Iraq.   Or the police that have to face down these nutters.

Congress has the authority to restrict the capabilities and capacities of firearms and ammunition. It just doesn't take the issue on. Gun ownership detractors think the term military style means automatic and large capacity. Actually it is a cosmetic term. As pointed out, automatic weapons are illegal for domestic sale and ownership in the states. If you are truly serious about the gun issue you need to understand the facts, not make assumptions about it. I am a gun owner and I agree with you. Domestic sale and uses of firearms needs to be addressed and realistic restrictions enacted.

By the way, on the issue of open carry only 5 states prohibit it. 31 states have no prohibition and the remainder have minor limitations. Open carry is a reasonable law that protects the constitutional rights of citizens who carry and do not carry. It makes a firearm carrier easy to identify. The law also provides for other forms of weapons like large knives.    Concealed carry should be vigorously restricted.

Keep the madness in the community ,   Deny any authority over the more dangerous & encourage their breeding and aggressive mentality and what do you get .

Rape , murder and general denial of any form of authority or rules.

I saw it predicted , way back in the 1960's, when the morons like "Richmond " were organising a whole new attitude for the containment of the dangerous Mentally ill .

We now pay the price for what we allowed to be created, by buffoons, who ignored the advice of the people who had the experience of the front line of the problem.
