Adelaide insists Betts still under contract

ADELAIDE Crows star Eddie Betts has distanced himself from reports he will leave West Lakes at the end of the season to rejoin Carlton.

As scrutiny about the threetime All-Australian intensified, the 32-year-old was yesterday swamped by diehard fans at the Royal Adelaide Show during a book signing for his Lil’ Homies series.

When asked about reports he had played his last game at the Crows, Betts responded: “Those weren’t my words”.

Yesterday’s report in The Australian claimed Betts was “desperately unhappy at Adelaide”, while Carlton was “crafting a two-year deal and mentoring role” for him.

Crows head of football Brett Burton told media yesterday Betts was a required player.

“Our understanding is that Eddie is going to be here next year. We certainly want him here next year and we haven’t heard anything different from his manager or him, contrary to reports,” Burton said.

“We also understand it’s the silly season. There’s plenty of moving parts. Players get lots of different offers from other clubs. That’s why the news is out there and it’s just part of the industry we operate in.”

Asked if the club would stand in Betts’ way should he request a trade, Burton said the Crows would “assess that”.

“We love Eddie and what he brings to the team and the town. We contracted him for a reason, because we wanted him to be here next year,” Burton said. “We’ll work through all of that … we haven’t heard anything different.

“He had a really good exit meeting with the coaches on Wednesday and it was all positive, and he said he was really looking forward to playing on next year and getting himself fit in the off-season.

“For now he’s contracted, and our last discussions with him is that he’s keen to go on.”

Meanwhile former Adelaide greats have weighed into the debate.

Inaugural coach Graham Cornes said it was the 32-yearold small forward’s call to make to stay or go.

“Eddie is contracted for another year. He’s a required player,” Cornes said.

“(The Crows) aren’t going to offer him a two-year contract, neither should they.

“If Eddie can get a two-year contract and move on, he should. It will be sad to see him go, but the end comes for everybody.”

Premiership captain Mark Bickley said if Betts left, the club could be forced to play its youngsters.

“If (Betts) was able to go to another club, let’s say it’s Carlton, and (Adelaide) remove his wage off their total player payments, with a heavy heart, he would go,” Bickley said.

“But in absolute real terms, it would be better for their list

— in terms of they clear some cap space and also it forces them to play the young players they’ve got, and they have probably got four or five small forwards.

“If Eddie were to stay, they still wouldn’t lose, because of the tangibles that he brings. He’s still one of the greatest team men to ever step through the door, and that’s disregarding his football ability.”

Are we all on Essendon tonight?
And as such, the AFL are on track to go broke.

Well whodathunkit? Essendon’s crap late season form was due to the fact that they were...well, crap. Or is this simply another of Worsfold’s masterstrokes?

Something unfair about Geelong having a home final at Collingwoods home ground.

There is some justification for next week's 1st semi final between Geelong & West Coast being played at Geelong, as there is no way that game will draw a crowd of  93,000 as Collingwood vs Geelong did at the MCG last night. That would be some reward for Geelong finishing on top after the home and away rounds. How many Eagle supporters will make the trek across the Nullabor ?

Okay, so after going into hiding for a few days, I am back.

Few points

1: Essendon easily had the ability to win contested ball, in and around the packs.
They fell apart dramatically at half forward with kicking.
They are a run and carry side. If they simply utilised their mids, handballing all the way around the park, using Saad, Shiel, etc, totally different kettle of fish. They are a fantastic run and carry side, as soon as they kick it,,,,, garbage.

2: Collingwood played out of their skin, and Geelong were terrible, yet got within 10 points.

3: Why should Geelong get a home final? People forget, they have an advantage for 10 to 12 rounds per year, playing on their own turf. They already have a huge advantage.
Teams like West Coast, sure, they have their own home turf as advantage, but they are disadvantaged by having to travel thousands of km per year.
Geelong has to travel 40 minutes to play at the MCG, or Marvel, or play on their home ground.

Geelong are lucky to even be a Vic side with their own home ground, so they should stop bloody complaining. It is way way harder for interstate sides to deal with travels.

Collingwood were too slick. They dance around like choreography. Geelong couldnt keep up.

Really looking forward to todays games.
It will be interesting to see if Tigers fall away in final quarter from the heat.

Geelong played NINE games  down at Geelong this year, nowhere near twelve.

The Mayor and his son Dylan, both rabid Bulldogs supporters, flew up to Sydney for the big finals game against GWS.

About 20 minutes into the 3rd quarter Craig was apparently on the phone seeing if they could secure an early flight home.  Ouch  Cry

Bye pre-finals was good for them in 2016, bad for them today. Looks like they lost momentum. Unfortunately turning it up here.

Good win by Richmond interstate at a packed Gabba in front 37,478 people which is the biggest crowd at the Gabba ever. Plus the Tigers continue their good record at the Gabba, they haven't lost there since 2004. They have played at the Gabba in 2005, 2006, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2019 and won them all. Also this was the first time the Brisbane Lions lost a finals match at the Gabba, having been 12 wins and no losses before tonight's match.

Will be a good game next week between GWS and the Lions, if GWS can produce that effort again the Lions might be going out in straight sets

The ABC documentary on Collingwood is very good. Almost got me hoping they can win one for Buck's this year. But I don't think they're good enough.

Part of me wants to hate Collingwood. I think it’s the whole Port Adelaide/Magpies equivalence that you’d have to be from here to understand.

But I just can’t- I think it comes from seeing The Club at an early age.

R.I.P Danny Frawley. 240 games as a player for St Kilda and then 113 games as coach for Richmond where he took Richmond to a Preliminary Final in 2001. A great bloke, an even bigger heart. My thoughts are with his family, friends and all who knew him. My thoughts are also with the St Kilda and Richmond Football Clubs.

I caught that by accident, the other night. Very revealing.

I'm ready to nobble Richmond or the Weagles (who will thrash Geelong), to give Bucks a chance of some compensation for all his defeats...

The boys played out of their brains against Geelong...which, unfortunately, is a trifle less intense than how the Tigers are playing... I'm clinging to the hope of a miracle, but Dusty and his gang look ominous...

I think we'll make the GF, over either GWS or the Lions, though...

GWS will give the pies a shake next week, but I'm sure the AFL want a all Victorian final
