The point of RUOK is not to ask one question, but to start a conversation.

As someone who lost a family member a few years ago to suicide I just wish people would recognise clinical depression and anxiety for what it is ie a physical disease like cancer or HIV. It’s a chemical imbalance of the brain and people suffering from it are not thinking clearly . They tend to cut themselves off from the world , whether physically locking themselves away or mentally just withdrawing . A jolly chat is not going to work. If we want to save lives we need to spend the money. Many more mental health hospitals with adequate staffing ratios and good doctors. And ( very controversially) the capacity for families and doctors to forcibly place someone into hospital against their will. Like the old days. If as a family we had had the capacity to make him get help our family member would be alive today I’m sure. But at least he died with his human rights intact!

Sorry for your loss Baguette.

You're right, it is a sickness. But it doesn't arrive overnight. It develops over time, like a cough can turn into pneumonia.

The point is, RUOK has a place in the support structure. It doesn't claim to be a cure for suicidal tendencies. It's a preventative measure that, at worst, could improve the service provided by Lifeline.

All society ever got from 'the old days' was out of sight, out of mind. Lobotomies and shock therapy were nothing more than a placebo for the unaffected.

As good as it is, the veterinary treatment of racehorses is very much out of 'the old days', and should serve as a cautionary tale of how we might turn out, or progress the breed, if all it took to inhibit the moody was a flick of the scalpel, or swish of the prescription pad.

My very naive understanding of suicide and mental health, and I am happy to be blown to pieces by those who believe I am wrong with evidence, If people are talking suicide they are probably the least to worry about ?

After the hospitalization of Majak Daw, Wayne Schwass on television that night as an advocate for mental health, talking of his own experience of standing on the stage as 1996 AFL Premiership winner, a life highlight, and all he could think of was killing himself.

Yeah sorry . I shouldn’t have posted on here. I get a bit triggered by it I suppose. And I wasn’t implying that we return to the old methods of treating mental health problems but that it would be good for families to be able to somehow force their family member into treatment BEFORE it gets to this stage.

I agree with Baguette about families should be able to force their members into treatment, because many wont admit to a problem and so wont seek help,,,not just suicide but other mental problems.

With all due respect, That is just unworkable.

The individual is entitled to their freedom.

If I were to draw a diagram, I would probably go with a funnel. The talkers would be at the top (largest group, furthest from 'completion'), but still in the funnel.

So, 'least to worry about' would probably be a fair strategy for the cleaners, but the rest of the system know that they'll work their way down the pipe, if left unchecked.

It's no easy discussion, certainly more advanced than the pubs I frequent. But, if the point being made is one of resource distribution, I'd probably argue that the best place to set up a defence would be in the upper middle of the funnel and prepare for a sort of fighting retreat down to the lower middle... say, the last 10% of your original population. Beyond that, they're too far gone and we'd be better off counselling the friends/family left behind, as we do with terminal illnesses.

Would much rather be talking about B-list celebrities croaking, to be honest.

The way she’s going, someone is going to ‘accidental overdose’ Lindsay Lohan... Equally short odds for LiLo to punch someone else’s ticket beforehand, such is the company she keeps.

I always figured her as one of those indestructible cockroach types, hence she’s not on my list.
