Kingy, I don’t think Kew Gardens & Flag of Honour are coming down.

First acceptances I think are taken midday tomorrow.

Internationals cleared for Guineas Day

Andrew Eddy@fastisheddy

11:40am

, (

Caulfield Guineas Day will enjoy international participation after Racing Victoria confirmed on Wednesday that horses currently at the Werribee International Horse Centre will be permitted to be released one day early from their 14-day quarantine.

A flight delay of about 20 hours for 19 of the international horses last weekend created a major headache for RV as they are all required to serve a mandatory 14-day term in quarantine but the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources has granted an early release to coincide with Caulfield Guineas Day.

DAWR's approval is subject to all import conditions being met by the horses, including negative equine influenza tests and satisfactory final veterinary examinations.

The approval means that, in total, 24 horses that have travelled from Europe to Melbourne for the Spring Carnival will be eligible to compete as scheduled at Caulfield on Caulfield Guineas Day - the day of their release on October 13.

The flight delay, which saw the plane sit on the tarmac at Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates for 20 hours while a cracked windscreen was repaired, had threatened to not only stop those horses from racing on October 13 but would have also forced the final planeload of spring contenders to spend a night at a government quarantine facility instead of the purpose-built Werribee centre.

RV's general manager of racing operations Paul Bloodworth said he was delighted with the outcome.

"The Department (of Agriculture and Water Resources) was satisfied that the 19 horses affected by the damaged airplane windscreen whilst in transit to Melbourne on the weekend were maintained in conditions that managed the biosecurity risk during their lengthy delay in Sharjah and throughout their flight to Australia," Bloodworth said.

"Subject to the horses being cleared of equine diseases following their standard post-arrival testing, they will be permitted to compete in feature races on Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day, and we will be able to welcome our final shipment of European horses on the same day without having to temporarily utilise any other quarantine facilities.

"We extend our appreciation to the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources for their confirmation that horses are eligible for release from our quarantine facility on Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas Day, and thank them for their timeliness in addressing this critical issue for the Spring Racing Carnival.

"I also extend our appreciation to our transport coordinators, IRT, for their support in facilitating this pleasing outcome and thank all affected trainers and owners for their understanding and patience as we navigated what was a unique event in our 25 years of international participation in the Spring Racing Carnival."

The following 24 horses, which are housed in the Newminster and Vintage Crop Stables at WIHC, are scheduled for release from quarantine on October 13:

• Benbatl (Saeed bin Suroor);

• Best Solution (Saeed bin Suroor);

• Prize Money (Saeed bin Suroor);

• Blair House (Charlie Appleby);

• Comicas (Charlie Appleby);

• Cross Counter (Charlie Appleby);

• Emotionless (Charlie Appleby);

• Casterton (Chris Waller);

Given Monday's arrival of the Japanese-trained horses Chestnut Coat and Sole Impact, the following eight horses, which are housed in the Americain Stables at Werribee, will remain in quarantine until October 15 as planned:

• Chestnut Coat (Yogelatio Yahagi);

• Count Octave (Chris Waller);

• Duretto (Andrew Balding);

• Gustavus Vassa (Lindsay Park);

• Red Verdon (Ed Dunlop);

Okay let me just say this after watching Yucatan win pulling up at the 150m.

Two weeks ago I said that the internationals would have to be a good group to beat the locals.

Well saddle up big boy, because this could be the best Melbourne Cup in recent times.

If Blair House, A Prince of Arrran, Benbatl and The CliffsofMaher, are anything to go by, then this group of internationals is the best we have seen, and we have not seen Magic Circle, Latrobe and any others high in the market.

What a win

Yes I know Benbatl and Blair House and TCOM will not run in the cup, but I am just saying this group of internationals, has quality all the way through, and you know that when an Irish sprinter can run second in the Schillaci and beat Voodoo Lad home.

Could you please paste the text next time Jamal? Smile

A controversial Melbourne Cup handicapping clause introduced in 2017 as a way to bolster the strength of the Caulfield Cup has been removed by the VRC.

Last spring, Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter announced that the Caulfield Cup winner could not be re-penalised into the Melbourne Cup if it had already been allocated 56kg or more and alternatively, if the Caulfield Cup winner had less than 56kg in the Melbourne Cup, any potential re-handicap could not take the horse's Melbourne Cup weight beyond that mark.

At the time, the announcement drew criticism from several stakeholders, including VRC Chairman Amanda Elliot who labelled Racing Victoria's lack of consultation with the club as "very disappointing" and questioned whether the changes were in the best interests of the race.

In delivering a 2.5kg Melbourne Cup penalty for impressive Herbert Power Stakes winner Yucatan on Monday, Carpenter confirmed that the clause no longer existed in the conditions for the Melbourne Cup.

"The arrangement last year is no longer available in the conditions of the Melbourne Cup," Carpenter said.

"The VRC have changed the conditions of the Melbourne Cup this year so that any horse is liable for a penalty and I can't make a determination around penalty until after the race (Caulfield Cup) is run.

"I can't say that any horse which wins on Saturday, whether it's Best Solution with 57.5kg or Cliffs of Moher with 56.5kg, won't be penalised."

Best Solution (57.5kg) and Cliffs of Moher (56.5kg) are the only two horses tackling the Caulfield Cup with a handicap of more than 56kg in the Melbourne Cup and either will be open to a penalty should they win Saturday's $5million feature.
