"The Country Championships excites all country participants and racegoers and is an important aspirational target for country racing," Racing NSW Chief Executive Peter V'landys said.

"The race meeting on which the heat will be conducted will be a Showcase meeting, with all other races on the program carrying a minimum of $30,000 prizemoney."

Port Macquarie qualifier over 1200m is done and dusted with Victorem winning easily from Awesome Pluck - both trained by Jenny Graham (also trained 3rd placegetter Portatorio).

Next race is at Goulburn on Sat over 1400m where Danny Williams will probably repeat the dose and train the tri.

Don't Give A Damn nearly unbeatable at the weights. Wouldn't be surprised to see big Kopi give him a scare at some point though.

Will be a long time before we see a female trainer trifecta a championship again.   Has Gai had a training trifecta ? I suppose she has ?

Expect she's had a few AA.
2001 GS tri with Ha Ha, Excellerator, Red Hannigan would be up there

Great effort by Jenny but it's a long way from racking up numerous Group wins as Gai has done over a long period. Opportunity, profile etc obviously all helped but let's not underestimate Gai's abilities, her doggedness and her sheer hard work. She was a glass ceiling breaker and she is, and probably always will be, the benchmark.

As you say, she was a breaker thru the stuffy barriers for women in the ranks.  Good on her .  She did have a lot of help along the way, not to mention money, but she deserves all she gets.
I find it a shame when something  good happens , away from the bright lites of Sydney , and there is very little aknowledgement of it , tho.
It always seems to those of us who live beyond the boundaries , that racing in the country doesnt count, so its a great idea V'Landys had, to instigate these championships, and give others besides Gai and Waller and Co a bit of a chance to shine.
Which Jenny did.

She might yet get her moment in the city limelight AA. Victorem in particular isn't anywhere near finished yet and should give them something to think about come April7 at HQ in what looks on paper to be a cracker of a race even at this point.

[There's a lot more in the link, including a video interview, but it didn't transfer properly so I've just included the first bit]

Comment: Graham's Champion Effort Does Country Racing Proud.

Comment by Ray Hickson

You could forgive Jenny Graham for feeling like she trained Winx for the past week, such has been the interest in her Country Championships runners.

And the popular Port Macquarie trainer handled it with class.

She’d had countless enquiries from all forms of media and didn’t refuse any despite knowing she was likely going to be answering the same questions.

No, Graham doesn’t train Winx but she did prepare the hot favourite Victorem – a very talented three-year-old with limitless potential – along with second elect Awesome Pluck (another promising young horse) and one of the stable mainstays in Portatorio.

So the pressure was on, she knew it and the interest in her horses only amplified it.

“It’s so awesome. I just wanted them to run well and they all did,’’ Graham said post-race, doing her best not to let emotion overcome her.

But she was more than entitled to let the relief out once Victorem and Awesome Pluck booked their place in the $500,000 final in April while stablemate Portatorio was right there with them.

Graham called it her biggest moment in racing. Watching Victorem, at just his fifth start, steam past a quality field you’d have to add ‘so far’ to that sentence.....

I think these heats should be capped to ONE horse per stable

Why one horse I have a small private stable of 6 in work and I got 2 into the Mudgee heat. It is supposed to be the best horses in that area. If one trainer has all the top horses good luck to him.

Maybe limit to 4 noms per race per yard?

All owners deserve a shot but it would defeat the purpose if say a couple of owners and trainers were to dominate noms and results. Prov Champs are worse imo due to the strength of particular stables. That may change of course.

So far we've had two trifectas from one yard each time. Can't recall that happening before even once, let alone 2/2. Today it looks likely to be a quinella for Mack Griffith but racing's a funny game as we know.

These races have been a spectacular success but they should be reviewed on a regular basis. I reckon moving qualifiers to different tracks occasionally would be a good initiative but money talks. Even before yesterday's barrier fiasco I'd like to have seen the Sapphire Coast club be given a chance in the SERA.

The Country final is shaping up as one for tha annals.

Good luck today scallywag.

and MAT DUNN should have heaps in his area

 Crockett gets plenty in qualifiers

then we have KIM MOORE and KRIS LEES having plenty,on past records,to think about.(PROVINCIAL)

consider ROD NORTHAM and the previous record of GREG BENNETT

STOP THE NONSENSE of restricting a STABLE.

I just don’t think it’s fair having one trainer dominate the race.
It should be capped per stable.

STOP THE NONSENSE of restricting a STABLE.

Generally agree but the Vic situation with Weir shows what can happen.

To make it fair for everyone, each trainer gets their highest rated horse into the race heat, and then if there are any spots left at the bottom, the remaining horses are balloted in order of Handicap rating (capped at 1 per stable)

In driving rain on a marginal track which went from G4 to H9 in no time, 90/1 outsider Cosmologist led most of the way and outplugged Noel's Gift and Ori On Fire in the walk to the wire in the Mudgee qualifier. Racecaller couldn't see and SKY had no vision until the very end. Punters' lament - just another way to do your dough. LOLCry

Yes AA, every cloud has a silver lining. Not sure if they needed it but 'Mud-gee' farmers will be singing in the rain. Good luck to them

Boy they needed it also.  It was a great winning story but so many horses had no chance.  Still must be the best payday for that jockey and trainer.  They showed their joy for all to see.  It's raining here but nothing like they got.  Fill the dams and water tanks if it keeps going at that speed.  Hope it gets into the hunter.  Some of the pictures of the yearlings show they really need it as well.

Mind you its a few weeks later than last year but is this the start of a very wet period like we got last year?

I normally check forecasts before betting but on this occasion I didn't even think about it. No excuse for running the race in those conditions though. That second storm which started before they all loaded hits 5 minutes earlier and jockeys would have said no vision, no ride. You would hope someone in the MRC would have had enough nous to say bring them back in but apparently it was too big a decision.

COSMOLOGIST was 250/1 before the rain came. SP @61

Eleanor Webster-Hawes had been going nowhere for such a long time but the last 12 months + she has been riding terrific.

Won plenty of races for trainer DON RYAN of BATHURST. If I remember correctly,Don Ryan was a farrier too. They won with AVE today, coming from last along the rails.

As for the atrocious conditions,I guess I've seen quite a few but the one that sticks is the SYDNEY CUP won by PALACE REVOLT....running down the outside rail with a light weight. If not mistaken, ridden by RON QUINTON...if not it was KEV MOSES
