Just to add my random flow of thoughts - if I was the MVRC at this late stage of the race (and with so many horses below the normal Cox Plate standard) I'd try to make the race a point of difference and ballot out all of those with average form credentials and have a small but select field. These are all the horses I've heard mention the Cox Plate prior to today;

Hartnell (extremely doubtful now)
Happy Clapper (2000m?)
Gailo Chop
Tosen Stardom
Tom Melbourne (if the connections were keen)
Kaspersky (too bad to be true in Toorak, maybe one more chance)
Folkswood (has to win Cranbourne Cup)
Riven Light (surely not)
Calderon (ditto)
Winx
Taj Mahal (couldn't possibly run on yesterday's performance)
Royal Symphony (I don't think he'll run but would definitely have him in if he considered it)

So there's not going to be many acceptors in any case. Embellish the horses that are in the field and kick out all those that you couldn't exaggerate/talk up their form.

Hartnell (past Cox Plate runner-up, Winx's signature rival)
Happy Clapper (best of the Sydney form - flying this prep, won a big G1 handicap, has raced well against Winx)
Gailo Chop (G1 win at WFA, tough and gutsy, returning to form after long-injury lay off, DK Weir)
Tosen Stardom (Former Japanese gun finally getting up to right distance range, super impressive in Toorak)
Folkswood (only if he wins later today, G1 placegetter overseas, lightly-raced/progressive)
Winx
Royal Symphony (fits the bill as talented, hyped 3yo on-the-up)

Taj Mahal, Riven Light and Calderon's form are too average on paper to consider. Obviously Taj Mahal's is much better than it looks (great run in Irish Champion), but because he did nothing yesterday you couldn't have him as a marketable conveyance. The others could only have been considered if they won yesterday.

With that field of 7 above, you have 5 G1 winners, all with interesting stories in their own right. You have an international whose form hasn't been exposed out here (could be anything) and an uber-talented 3yo that possesses an incredible turn of foot. I feel like the race would be better for that select nature, rather than pigeonholing in a few below-standard internationals with average looking form looking to run 6/7/8th.

I would love to see a real hard going front runner in the race.

I think Aloisia will also run. A very good chance to place given the likely balance of the field.

Any chance the Caulfield Guineas winner might have a throw at the stumps?

Re Winx:-     Boss on an opponent might be the only way to beat her.

He did a good job flattening Hartnell yesterday.

Some really nice odds on a couple of horses..

can get 25 with a boost on Folkswood and Gailo Chop!

If you back them both at 25's with just 10 dollars you will lose 20 dollars

I hope Weir goes here with Tosen Stardom, I’ll be taking him in the fave out market. Finally stringing a few runs together and I think the best is yet to come.

Cranbourne Cup winner, who's never won at black type prior, is 2nd favourite. I know it ran 2nd in a Grp 1 in Dubai, but in any other year, there would be a debate whether he would even warrant a start, which goes to show the Winx effect.

I've personally backed Royal Symphony at $51 (with odds boost) which one outlet was still offering, having a feeling they'll go this way now and if they do, he's 2nd-3rd favourite in my opinion. And of course, thinks can happen between now and raceday with Winx.

Djebel is about spot on with his list. In the end, the key to the field is the 3yo's....

One wouldn't think Folkswood would get an invite but he has finished second in a G1 and G3 race overseas so isn't without some form.

Has there been any confirmation of Tosen Stardom lining up here? Jamie Lovett (Austrlian Bloodstock) tweeted about it, but haven't seen anything further...

Murrell was thrilled to see Tosen Stardom breakthrough in Australia after a troubled run since coming from Japan.

“He’s been so unlucky with a few little injuries and his last four runs he's drawn the outside,” he said. “He hasn’t had any luck at all so he deserved it. It was a really good one.

“He’ll go to the Cox Plate and I think he can run second or third. We’ll give him his chance, but obviously we’re not beating Winx."

x 2

14 lengths

bet the margin on ladbrokes.
they will really let her unleash this year.

theres a very real possibility she will win by over 10 lengths.

you can argue its a bit selfish to push her, why risk damage etc, but she loves to run, let her.

Thanks Hoffy. Interesting place market, they've got a lot in there that are very very unlikely to go around. If you concentrate on the likely 2nd, 3rd and 4th favourites, (who are definitely going this way), you'll make an comfortable profit as long as only one of them runs 2nd or 3rd.

And a max $8 bet on ROYAL SYMPHONY at $7.25.
