Here's my market for the Caulfield Cup as of today.  I have left out the internationals out because I don't know which ones, if any, are coming for the race.  The weights for the CC have not been declared yet so in my calculations I estimated the weights each horse will get.  The prices in brackets are the best bookmaker prices available at IAS or TAB Sportsbet.

$5.40 Lights Of Heaven ($11)
$10  December Draw ($15)
$16  Rekindled Interest ($26)
$19  Scarlett Lady ($11), Maluckyday ($15)
$22  Cedarberg ($31)
$24  Harris Tweed (NZ) ($51)
$27  My Kingdom Of Fife ($17), Herculian Prince ($41)
$33  Shamrocker ($13), Lion Tamer ($15), Descarado (26)
$36  Abolutely ($26)
$40  Glass Harmonium ($21), Precedence ($26), Tullamore ($26), Linton ($21)
$50  Once Were Wild ($51)
$85  Foreteller ($35)
$140 Brazilian Pulse ($26)
$161 Sincero ($41)
$201 Southern Speed ($41), Heidelicious ($26)
$501 Shootoff ($21)

On current prices, I think the best value horses are Lights Of Heaven, December Draw, Rekindled Interest, Cedarberg, Harris Tweed (NZ), and Herculian Prince.  Obviously my market will change dramatically as the horses start racing.  I have already factored in the good first up performances of Rekindled Interest and Cedarberg.

My updated market after racing on Saturday 13th August (framed to 65%)

$4.80 Lights Of Heaven
$12  December Draw
$23  Scarlett Lady
$29  Rekindled Interest, Maluckyday
$33  My Kingdom Of Fife
$43  Cedarberg
$48  Shamrocker
$50  Absolutely
$52  Descarado
$53  Glass Harmonium
$54  Harris Tweed (NZ)
$55  Precedence
$56  Lion Tamer
$65  Tullamore
$79  Linton
$83  Herculian Prince
$101+  Others

Lights Of Heaven is still value although she has tightened up with bookies.  The other value horse is December Draw.  All other horses are unders, which is hardly surprising considering the bookies are betting to percentages in excess of 300%.

Are they definately heading to the Caulfield Cup with Lights Of Heaven ?

She strikes me as a Cox Plate type. 2000m will see her out.

Heading into Saturday Moody was not at all committed to the Caulfield Cup.  He was leaving his options open.  He implied that if she was up to WFA standard then he would aim for the Cox Plate, but if not then the Caulfield Cup.  I would think after her run today he would be thinking more towards the Cox Plate.  She could always run in both.

She could but I hope not. Unless of course you have a bundle on her for the C/Cup than I will cheer her for the Cup.

I've got her going for heaps to win the Cox Plate, because I think this is the way they will go.  I've also backed her modestly for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups just in case they go that way.  I would much prefer they forget about the CC (and esp MC) and aim just at the CP.

Hopefully she goes to the Cox Plate after that run. Our current WFA stocks are thin and she is the one to emerge from the pack.

They will only get one crack at a Caulfield Cup with the weight she will be getting, Cox plate will still be there next year, I am on her in everything, just a thought.

I agree Tyson.  If Bart was training her no doubt he would take that approach.

Moody isn't committing himself at this stage, and I think that is the wise thing to do.  If she wins her next 2/3 WFA starts and is looking like a moral for the CP, then logically it is the way to go.  After all, he knows she runs a strong 2000m, but 2400 is an unknown, and luck in running is a big factor in a CC.  However if she is only running minor placings at WFA, then the CC is the obvious choice.  Time will tell.

A solid final workout has the Americain camp confident the defending Melbourne Cup champion can make it back-to-back wins in the Prix Kergorlay at Deauville, France, on Sunday night (AEST).

The Australian-owned son of Dynaformer won the 3000-metre Group Two event at his final European start before coming to Australia last spring and champion French trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre is sticking with the winning formula.

Part-owner Colleen Bamford said connections were this week informed of how the seven-year-old had progressed since his win in the Listed Prix de Reux (2500m) on August 2 and all looked promising.

"We got an email yesterday with some photos and he had his last good gallop (on Wednesday morning) before the race on Sunday and he looked amazing," Bamford said on Thursday.

"We'd had a little bit of concern with him earlier in the year, he just didn't quite look right, but now he looks just like he did last year.

"He's really bloomed and we're expecting that he'll run really well on Sunday.

"He won the Prix Kergorlay last year before coming to Australia so we're hoping that he can do that again this year."

The Prix Kergorlay will be Americain's final start before embarking on another Australian trip, where he is entered for both the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup and $3 million Cox Plate.

Entries for the $6 million Melbourne Cup close on September 1.

Americain won't be the only Spring Racing Carnival contender in action at the Deauville meeting with a couple of other Cups contenders also a chance of running.

The Luca Cumani-trained Manighar, who was a luckless second to Americain 12 months ago, remains in the Prix Kergorlay but may stay in the UK for Saturday night's Lonsdale Cup at York.

Americain's fellow French-trained galloper Dunaden will run in the Prix Kergorlay and trainer Mikel Delzangles is eager to contest his first Melbourne Cup with the promising stayer.

Also amongst the entries are Caulfield Cup nominees Red Cadeaux and Allied Powers, with Fox Hunt and Kasbah Bliss possible Melbourne Cup entries if they run well. - aap

Please ignore the market I posted half an hour ago.  I found a few errors in my calculations.

I really like December Draw for the Caulfield Cup.  My biggest concern is that he may not get a run.  I guess we will have a better idea when weights are released on Tuesday.  Hopefully there won't be too many international visitors taking up places in the Caulfield Cup at the expense of locals.

If December Draw gets a very light weight, which races would he need to win to beat the ballot?

If he wins the Makybe Diva, Dato Tan Chin Nam Sakes, Underwood Stakes, Naturalism Stakes, Herbert Power or Yalumba Stakes he's exempt from the ballot...Also eligible for a penalty for the Caulfield Cup if he wins any handicap worth over $60k in prizemoney and at a distance of 1600m or more... So Still plenty of chances for him to get himself in there!

Forgot to put the Turnbull Stakes in but it is a ballot exempt race for the Caulfield Cup as well...

Americain to be given top weight for Caulfield Cup

MELBOURNE Cup winner Americain, not surprisingly, will head the Caulfield Cup weights when they are released on Tuesday, but don't expect him to be given the "grandstand".

The French champion, who carried 54.5kg in his stunning win at Flemington last year, is expected to receive less than 60kg from Racing Victoria chief handicapper Greg Carpenter.

Most observers expect Americain to receive no more than 59kg, most likely 58kg.

Gone are the days when horses would be saddled with 60-plus kilos.

Carpenter said his charter for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups was to attract the best stayers in the world and not shackle them with weights that give them no chance of winning.

"The nature of the race has changed and how I handicap them has changed," he said.

"These races are Group 1 handicap races and we want the best stayers in the world to compete in them.

"Our very best horses and those from overseas, like Yeats, Septimus and Vinnie Roe, are encouraged to run and they have to give weight to lesser-performed horses.

"In the last 30-40 years only two horses have been able to carry more than 57kg and win the Melbourne Cup and only Northerly carried 58kg to win the Caulfield Cup. No matter how good a horse is, to carry big weights against quality opposition with less weight, it does take an exceptional performance to still win the race."

Carpenter said the Caulfield Cup was shaping up well with the first two placegetters in last year's Melbourne and Caulfield Cups (Americain and Maluckyday; Descarado and Harris Tweed) plus a host of talented four-year-old mares, headlined by Lights Of Heaven, Shamrocker and King's Rose.

For the first time the Caulfield Cup weights will come out before weights for the Melbourne Cup, nominations for which close on Thursday.

This is one of the beefs I have with the international horses.  They are given preferential treatment when it comes to weights.  The good ones are not given enough weight, and the mediocre ones are given more weight than they should so that they are not balloted out.  The clubs seem obsessed with attracting the best international horses to make our races look better and add prestige.  In understand this, but the cost is that the local Aussie horses get a bum deal by comparison.

I disagree - I believe that overseas horses may not get enough weight, true, but I don't think they are overrated by any means. They aren't given too much weight.

Also, the proof is in the pudding - only four overseas stayers have won in the last 18 years.

I didn't mean to suggest they are overrated.  I think the good ones aren't given enough weight.  I was also trying to make the point that the ones that haven't won big races overseas may be given more weight than they should to give them less chance of being ballotted out.  In other words I thin the top end get too little, and the bottom end too much.

I know what you are saying - what I'm saying is that I don't think the bottom end don't get too much.
